초록

고려시대 사신도의 현무 도상이라는 주제로 진행된 본 연구는 고려시대에만 표현되는 현무의 독특한 도상에 대한 의문점에서 출발하였으며, 그 내용을 정리한 것이다. 삼국시대 고분벽화로 표현되었던 사신도는 신라가 삼국통일을 하면서 그 모습을 찾아보기 힘들었으나, 고려시대에 이르러 다시 등장하게 된다. 고려시대 사신도는 고분미술 외에 동경과 금속장식구 등 표현된 범위가 넓어지는데 소위 사신문동경이라고 부르는 고려시대 동경 속 현무 도상의 특징은 측면으로만 표현되던 삼국시대와 달리 정면의 동세를 취하고 있었으며 이는 동시기 중국미술에서 그 선례를 찾아보았다. 금속장식구의 경우 현재까지 확인된 수량은 많지 않으나 현무 머리가 용두형으로 표현된 큰 변화가 있었다. 이는 신라하대부터 고려시대까지 꾸준히 조성되었던 용두형 귀부와의 영향관계로 추정하였으며 북방을 수호하는 방위신 현무에게 신성을 강조하려는 일편의 방법으로 보인다.
고려시대 ‘고분미술’ 속 현무는 동경 속에서 볼 수 있는 정면 동세와 금속장식구에서 보였던 용두형 두 가지 특징을 모두 가지고 있었다. 그러나 가장 큰 변화는 거북과 뱀이 함께 표현되는 구사합체 도상이 아닌 뱀이 생략되고 등에 산을 짊어진 부분이었고, 이를 신산형 현무라고 명명하였다. 이와 같은 현무와 비슷한 사례는 동시기 일본미술 속 봉래산을 짊어진 거북에서 찾을 수 있었으며 『초사』와 『열자』에서 산을 짊어진 거북이 신선들이 사는 이상세계 신산을 짊어지고 수호하는 역할을 한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 거북이 방위신인 현무로 채택된 이유 역시 이러한 신체적 특성과 관념 때문이었으며, 결국 고려시대 신산형 현무는 자신의 본래 모습으로 돌아간 것이라는 결과를 도출할 수 있었다.
신산형 현무가 고려시대에만 나타나는 것에는 여러 가지 이유가 있겠지만 도교문화의 영향으로 추정해보았다. 고려시대는 우리나라 역사상 도교가 가장 성행한 시기로 수많은 도교기구가 건립되고, 당시 국왕들은 그곳에서 도교의례인 초례를 거행했다. 이러한 도교는 귀족층과 불교계까지 깊숙이 자리 잡았는데 신라에서 보이지 않던 도교미술이 고려에 다수 제작되는 것도 같은 현상이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 음양오행과 천문 이십팔수를 상징하는 사신도는 우리나라에 가장 많이 표현된 도교 도상이며, 거북이 받친 신산 또한 도교의 대표적인 이상세계이다. 당시 도교를 믿었던 고려시대 사람들은 자신의 관이나 무덤에 산을 짊어진 신산형 현무를 표현하여 자신들이 현무가 짊어진 사후 이상세계인 신산에 가기를 희망했을 것이다.

영어초록

This study arranged under the theme, 'Hyeon-mu(Black Tortoise)' iconography of the Painting of the Animal Symbols of the Four Directions in the Goryeo Dynasty' started from a critical mind about unique iconography of Hyeon-mu's expressed only in Goryeo Dynasty and arranged the contents. The Paintings of the Animal Symbols of the Four Directions expressed in ancient tomb mural in the Three Kingdoms of Korea were hard to be found as Silla unified the three kingdoms. But they again appeared in the Goryeo Dynasty and the expressed range including brozne mirrors, metal accessories, etc. widened with mural art.
Here, Hyeon-mu iconography in a bronze mirror in the Goryeo Dynasty called 'Sasinmun-donggyeong(四神文銅鏡)' is characterized by a pose to look at the front unlike Hyeon-mu's in the Three Kingdoms of Korea that sides were just expressed. This precedents could be found in Chinese art in the same period and Hyeon-mu iconography could be found to be influenced by China.
The number of metal accessories found until now is small, but there was a great change that heads of sombre warriors were expressed as Dragon heads. This was assumed to be influenced by dragon head-type tortoise stone platforms that continued to be created from the late Silla period to the Goryeo Dynasty and is thought to be a method to emphasize divine nature(神性) in Hyeon-mu, the defense god that defends the north.
Hyeon-mu's in mural art in the Goryeo Dynasty have two features of the pose to look at the front in metal mirrors and dragon heads in metal accessories. However, the greatest change is the part to have a mountain on its back while a snake are omitted snakes, not the type that a turtle is combined and expressed with a snake, and was named ‘godly mountain-type Hyeon-mu(神山形 玄武)’.
The similar case with this Hyeon-mu could be found in a turtle that carries the Isle of Eternal Youth on its back in Japanese art in the same period. 『The Songs of the South(楚辭)』 and 『Lie Yukou(列子)』 could be found that turtles that carry godly mountains, the ideal world that immortals live in, on their back and play a role of defending them. And the study could draw the conclusion that turtles were selected as Hyeon-mu, the defense god, because of their physical characteristics and ideas and eventually, the godly mountain-type Hyeon-mu in the Goryeo Dynasty got back to the way they look naturally. There are several reasons that the godly mountain-type Hyeon-mu appeared only in the Goryeo Dynasty, but it was assumed to be influenced by Taoist culture. Taoism most prevailed in the Goryeo Dynasty in Korean history, a lot of Taoist organizations were established, and the then kings held Cho-rye(醮禮), the Taoist ritual. This Taoism was deeply rooted in aristocracy and Buddhism. Much Taoist art that had not been shown in Silla is found as the same phenomenon.
The Painting of the Animal Symbols of the Four Directions that symbolizes yin-yang and Five Elements(陰陽五行) and Twenty eight pieces of the Cetelstial Pattern(二十八宿) is Taoism that is most expressed in Korea and the godly mountain supported by the turtle is also representative Taoism. The then people who believed in Taoism in the Goryeo Dynasty hoped to go the godly mountain, the ideal world after their death carried by their Hyeon-mu, by expressing the godly mountain-type Hyeon-mu who carried the mountain on his back on their coffins or graves.
