우크라이나 영화 시인, 도브젠코(О. Довженко) 삼부작에 나타난 신(新)-구(舊)의 영화적 모티브 (The Filmic Motif of The Old and New in Cinema's poet, O. Dovzenko's 'Ukraine Trilogy'.)

초록

본 논문은 아이젠스타인, 푸도프킨과 함께 소비에트시대를 대표하는 우크라이나출신 영화감독 올렉산드르 도브젠코(Олександр П. Довженко, 1894-1956)와 작품에 대한 소개를 목적으로 하였다. 특히 수작(秀作)으로 널리 평가받고 있는 이반을 비롯한 삼부작(즈베니고라, 무기고, 대지)을 중심으로 고찰하였다.
교조주의 비평가들로부터 작가는 모호한 이념적 태도를 구실로 “반혁명”이라는 비판을 받고, 점차 1차 선형적인 나레이션, 낙관적 플롯, 일관된 사건의 연속 등 사회주의적 사실주의에 수렴한다.
하지만 도브젠코는 계급, 초국가, 정치이념 등을 추구한 소비에트의 예술문화 환경 속에서도 민족 정체, 사상, 역사와 민속 등을 기저로 우크라이나적 색채를 잃지 않았으며 무엇보다 서사 공간의 확장 및 강렬한 주제 의식을 완성시킴으로써 특별한 자리를 차지하고 있다.
삼부작에서 볼 수 있는 공통된 특징으로 작가는 이상과 현실이라는 대조적인 미쟝센을 위하여 전통적 모티브를 언제나 모더니즘상의 미학적 매개물과 병치시킨다 라는 점이다. 사건 발단의 계기이자 전개의 발화물로써 이질적인 신(新)과 구(舊)는 팽팽한 평행선을 유지하며 대립각을 세운다. 하지만 순환적인 결합으로 거듭나게 되고 급기야 철학적 가치에 이르게 되는데 신과 구, 이 양자는 자연과 더불어 필름의 의미론적 삼각구도를 형성시키는 중요한 축인 것이다.

영어초록

Cinema's poet of Ukraine , Alexander Dovzenko is one of the major pioneers of Soviet filmmaking. His Ukraine Trilogy (Zvenyhora, Arsenal, Earth) including 'Ivan' won international recognition and have estimated as classics of the silent and early sound era.
When Trilogy premiered in 1930's, films became the targets of attacks from critics like the Soviet montage directors suffered under Stalinist constraints. These were regarded as "against revolution" and he was ruled and mocked by Soviet authorities due to its ambiguous political message. When he began to feel ever more oppressed by the bureaucracy of Stalin. Dovzhenko managed to transform himself and followed the enforced norms of socialist realism-linear narratives, continuity practices, optimistic plot formulas.
His work is a montage of associations and impressions. It is very Dovzenko who properly combined the principle of montage with a realistic appreciation for the nature. The director saw montage as the highest potential of film. Montage has very little camera movement or movement within the frame. Narrative flow is the product of ending and composition, within each shot composed and framed according to the director's painterly vision.
He tried to formulate a Ukrainian national voice in the context of Soviet artistic culture. He accomplished amalgamation between his Ukrainian national identity and the transnational, class based on the ideologies promoted by the Regime. The storyline combines elements of fact and folklore in relating the history of the Ukraine. Certainly it seems that he had the special burden of being labeled both as a formalist and a nationalist scriptwriter.
Simultaneously, he often engaged this problem through the old and new in Ukraine Trilogy, just like the peasant's first tractor in Earth, the hydroelectric dam in the river valley in Ivan, the airplane in the Siberian wilderness in Aerograd. Each new technology in this cycle anticipates a changing social order and therefore the characters restricted by the filmic tradition must learn to accommodate.
Combining images from Ukrainian subjects, rigid realism, visual poetry, propaganda, and gentle humor, his films celebrated nature as the eternal witness of the human being.
