『삼국유사』 신주편 연구 (A Study on Sinju-pyeon in Samgukyusa)

초록

『삼국유사』는 사학, 문학, 불교학에서 다각도로 연구되었다. 하지만 신주편에 대한 논의는 상대적으로 적었다. 본고의 목적은 신주편이 무엇을 다루고 있으며, 전하려는 바가 무엇인지 밝히려는 것이다.
『삼국유사』 신주편에는 세 편의 이야기가 실려 있다. 세 편의 이야기를 살펴본 결과 다음과 같은 공통점이 있었다. 세 이야기는 1) 승려가 주인공이며, 2) 타인의 요청으로, 3) 타인의 어려움을, 4) 불법으로 해결한 이야기라는 점이다. 신주편 세 이야기를 『삼국유사』 다른 편목의 이야기들과 비교했을 때 어려움을 불법으로 극복했다는 점에서 차이가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또 신주편 세 이야기에는 불법에 대한 바른 인식을 갖도록 하는 내용이 있었다. 불법은 함부로 사용해서는 안 되며, 불법은 어려움을 극복하는 수단이 아니라 불법을 따르는 삶을 살도록 만들기 위함이며, 불법은 대가를 지불하고 그 효험을 구할 수 있는 것이 아니라 그 자체로 영험한 것이라는 사실이다.
이를 통해 볼 때 『삼국유사』 신주편에서 다루려는 것은 불법이며, 불법이 지닌 영험함을 보여주려 한 것으로 보인다. 그럼에도 세 편밖에 실리지 않은 것은 불법에 대한 그릇된 인식이 형성되는 것을 경계했기 때문이다.

영어초록

Studies on Samgukyusa have been progressed largely in the three fields of study, history, literature and Buddhism. Up to date, there have been hundreds of the research papers. However, there are a relatively small number of studies on Sinju-pyeon in Samgukyusa. The aim of this paper is to reveal what Sinju-pyeon in Samgukyusa treats and tries to convey.
There are three stories in Sinju-pyeon in Samgukyusa. A review of the three stories reveals the following things in common. They are stories that their main characters who are (1)monks solve (2)other people's difficulties (3)from other people's request (4)by the law of Buddha. The other people's difficulties were knotty. Because they remained unresolved for long time or suddenly happened to someone. Nevertheless, they were solved by the law of Buddha. In the three stories in Sinju-pyeon, the law of Buddha conquers difficulties, which makes them especially distinguished from other stories.
Although Samgukyusa might be regarded as a history book, it might be seen as a book collecting stories about Buddhism, too. By the way, the law of Buddha is Buddha's teaching and one of the Three Treasures in Buddhism. In Samgukyusa, there are various of stories related to Buddhism. It seems that the law of Buddha should have been treated more importantly in Samgukyusa. Nevertheless, there are only the three stories. It can be seen that the reason is a special character of Buddhism. The key point of Buddhism is that people find enlightenment through cultivating their mind for themselves and renounce their earthly desires. In this process, the law of Buddha should help them to renounce their earthly desires. It must not be used as a means for solving individual difficulties. This is the reason that there are only the three stories in Sinju-pyeon in Samgukyusa although the law of Buddha is treated in it.
Sinju-pyeon in Samgukyusa treats the law of Buddha and shows that there is no difficulties that cannot be solved by the law of Buddha. Nevertheless, there are only the three stories in it. It can be understood that the reason is in order to show that the law of Buddha should not be used thoughtlessly for solving individuals' problems.
