Karl Rahner’s Idea of Primary Worship: Knowledge and Love of the Mystery

This paper is an analysis of Rahner’s theology of worship. Worship for him is first and foremost an encounter with God, which results in the deification of the human subject. He coins the expression, “the liturgy of the world”, to describe the hidden experiences of God that are always in the depth of the daily lives of any human being. God through His self-communication is ever-present as the ultimate horizon of our knowing and choosing. The liturgy of the church becomes meaningful only when the liturgy of the world is celebrated primarily, and when the former is seen to be the symbolic manifestation of the latter. The world and its history is the locus of the primary and original liturgy in its most basic and complete form. The liturgy of the world is possible because of the transcendental orientation of the human person toward God as the absolute mystery. From the perspective of Rahner’s transcendental theology, this liturgy consists of knowledge, freedom, the love of neighbor, and death. The final moment of that liturgy of the world comes at one’s death embraced as the free act of surrender.
This paper is a pastoral application of Rahner’s theology of Grace. As such, it does not attempt to go beyond his own “first level of reflection.” His emphasis on the universal offering of Grace brings new light on the sacramental nature of the Church and of its liturgy in the world’s context. It is not an overstatement that many practicing Catholics still do experience a gap between the profane world of their living and the “sacred” hour of their Sunday worship. Rahner’s theology of grace helps to overcome the dualism without losing sight of the importance of the external worship.
