신명균의 실력양성 교육과 『신소년』 (The Ability Cultivating Education and Shinsonyeon(신소년) of Shin Myung-kyun)

초록

『신소년』은 대표적인 근대 소년잡지 중 하나로서 어린이, 청소년들의 성장 및 문화에 이바지하였으나 그동안 잘 알려지지 못했다. 다행히 『신소년』 창간 100주년에 즈음하여 미발굴 자료들이 공개되고, 그 주간인 신명균의 생애와 문화운동에 대한 본격적인 탐구가 이루어졌다. 이 연구는 그 토대를 발판 삼아 신명균의 교육운동의 관점에서 신소년의 성격을 탐구하였다.
『신소년』은 신명균이 독도보통학교를 그만두고 본격적인 문화운동에 뛰어드는 시기에 창간된 잡지로서 신명균을 주축으로 한 보통학교 교사들이 주로 상급학교 진학을 앞둔 보통학교 고학년 남학생들을 대상 독자로 하여 만들었다. 사회에서 존경받는 인사였던 신명균은 이후, 조선어학회ㆍ색동회 회원, 대종교인, 사회주의 소설가 등 다양한 인사들을 집필자로 섭외하여 조선 소년들의 실력양성에 도움이 되는 글을 싣기 위해 노력하였다. 『신소년』의 전반적인 체제와 내용을 살펴 그 성격을 구체화하면 다음과 같다.
사상적으론 민족의 언어, 역사, 지리에 관련된 기사를 실어 민족의 정체성을 공고히 하고, 나아가 우리 민족에 대한 자부심과 애착을 갖도록 한다. 이때 동화, 동요는 창작물보다 민담이나 번역동화, 민요가 많이 실리며, 정서교육보다 민족의 언어 교육 자료로서 기능한다. 교양적으론 근대의 실용적, 과학적 지식과 관련된 기사를 실어, 상급학교 진학을 비롯한 독자들의 사회화에 실질적인 도움을 주고자 한다. 특히 서구의 근대 문명 및 과학 지식과 관련된 정보를 많이 제공하고, 나아가 독자들이 과학적 세계관과 사고방식을 갖게 하려고 한다. 도덕적으론 훈화, 사담, 동화 등을 통해 충, 효, 신의, 절개 등의 유교적 가치를 지향한다.
요컨대, 신명균의 실력양성 교육의 매체로 기능한 『신소년』은 문예(감성, 관념)보다 지식(이성, 실질) 중심의 잡지로서, 근대의 실용적, 과학적 지식을 중시하면서도 도덕적으로는 유교적 가치를 지향한다. 이는 전통적인 제도와 사상을 유지하면서, 서양의 근대적인 기술을 받아들이자는 주장인 동도서기론과 맥이 닿아 보인다.

영어초록

Shinsonyeon(신소년) is one of the representative modern youth magazines and contributed to the growth and culture of children & young adults, but it has not been well known. Fortunately, around the 100th anniversary of Shinsonyeon, undiscovered materials were released and a full-scale exploration of the life and cultural movement of Shin Myung-kyun, the chief editor of Shinsonyeon, was conducted. Based on the result, this study examined the characteristics of Shinsonyeon from the perspective of Shin Myung-kyun’s educational movement.
Shinsonyeon was founded when Shin Myung-kyun quit Dokdo Primary School and entered the full-fledged cultural movement, and was created by elementary school teachers with Shin Myung-kyun mainly for male students in the upper grades of elementary school who were about to enter higher schools.
Shin Myung-kyun, a respected figure in society, later tried to recruit various people including members of the Joseon Language Society, Daejonggyo, Saekdonghoe, and socialist novelists as writers to publish articles that would help develop the ability of Joseon youths. The overall system and contents of Shinsonyeon and its character are specified as follows. Ideologically, articles related to the language, history, and geography of their nation were published to solidify national identity and further to have pride and attachment to their nation. At this time, fairy tales and children’s songs contained more folktales, translated fairy tales, and folk songs than creations, and functioned as materials of national language education rather than emotional education. Culturally, articles related to modern practical and scientific knowledge were published to provide practical help to the socialization of readers, including higher school entrance. In particular, it aims to provide a lot of information related to modern civilization and scientific knowledge of the West, and furthermore, to make readers have a scientific worldview and way of thinking. Morally, it aims for Confucian values such as loyalty, filial piety, good faith, and fidelity through instructions, a historical story, and fairy tales.
In short, Shinsonyeon, which served as a medium for Shin Myung-kyun’s ability cultivating education, is a magazine centered on knowledge (reason, substance) rather than literature (sensitivity, idea), and aims for Confucian values morally while placing importance on practical and scientific knowledge of modern times. This seems to be in line with the theory of ‘Dongdoseogi’(동도서기론), which argues to accept Western modern technology while maintaining traditional institutions and ideas.
