영화 <컬러풀 웨딩즈>와 <나의 그리스식 웨딩>은 이질적 문화 출신의 남녀가 만나서 결혼에 이르게 되는 과정에서 벌어지는 다양한 갈등과 이의 해소라는 공통의 주제를 다룬 코미디 영화들이다. 두 영화는 이질적인 문화들이 만날 때 발생하는 전형적인 오해와 갈등을 소개하고 이를 해소해가는 과정을 유쾌하게 그린다. <컬러풀 웨딩즈>의 경우 딸들이 타문화권 출신의 배우자들과 결혼하는 것을 못마땅해 하는 베르누이 부부의 인종적 편견이 갈등의 주된 요인이다. 인종적 차이와 종교적 차이가 그들이 느끼는 거부감의 주된 원인이다. 그러나 막내딸 로라의 결혼 과정에서 겪는 일련의 경험을 통해 베르누이 부부는 자신들의 인종적, 문화적 편견을 극복하고 다문화 결혼에 대한 변화된 시선을 갖게 된다. <나의 그리스식 웨딩>의 경우 거스가 지닌 지독할 정도의 그리스 중심주의가 갈등의 주된 원인이다. 하지만 그의 딸 툴라는 아버지의 완고한 반대를 극복하고 마침내 백인 미국 청년인 이안과의 행복한 다문화 결혼에 성공한다. 두 영화가 문화적 차이로 인한 갈등을 공통적으로 그리면서도, 이러한 갈등을 대처하는 방식에 있어서는 다소 상이한 접근법을 보여준다. <나의 그리스식 웨딩>의 경우 서로 다른 문화적, 종교적 차이로 인한 갈등의 해소가 한 쪽의 일방적인 이해와 양보로 이뤄진다. 이를 가장 잘 보여주는 장면은 청교도인 이안이 그리스정교로 개종하고 세례를 받는 장면이다. 반면 <컬러풀 웨딩즈>의 경우 양측의 상호이해와 양보를 통해서 갈등이 해소된다. 특히 두 집안의 가부장들인 클로드와 앙드레가 서로의 다름보다는 공통점을 더 많이 발견하고 서로를 이해하고 수용하는 방식으로 갈등이 해소된다. 이 점에서 <컬러풀 웨딩즈>가 <나의 그리스식 웨딩>보다 좀 더 건강한 방식의 문제 해결을 보여준다고 말할 수 있다.

Serial Bad Weddings and My Big Fat Greek Wedding are comedy movies which show various conflicts and events that take place while a man and a woman from different cultures are going out with each other and getting married. Both movies depict a variety of cultural conflicts that often occur when heterogeneous cultures come into contact with each other and how those conflicts might be resolved. In the case of Serial Bad Weddings, the racial prejudice of the Verneuil couple, who are dissatisfied with their daughters marrying spouses from other cultures, is the main cause of the conflicts. Racial and religious differences are the main causes of their dissatisfaction with their sons-in-law. However, through a series of experiences during the marriage process of their youngest daughter Laure, they eventually overcome their racial and cultural prejudices and have a changed view of multicultural marriage. In the case of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Gus's extreme Greek supremacy is the main cause of the conflicts. However, his daughter Toula overcomes his opposition and finally succeeds in a happy multicultural marriage with Ian Miller, a white American youth. While the two films depict conflicts due to cultural differences in common, they show somewhat different approaches in the way they deal with these conflicts. In the case of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, most conflicts are resolved by means of one-sided understandings and concessions of a family. The scene where Ian converts to Greek Orthodox Christianity and is baptized best illustrates this point. On the other hand, in the case of Serial Bad Weddings, major conflicts are settled through mutual understandings and concessions between the two families. For example, the two patriarchs of both families, Claude and André, come to find that they have much in common while they are conversing and discussing various matters over the wedding ceremony at hand. They understand and accept each other more and more, and finally reslove their conflict. In this respect, it can be said that Serial Bad Weddings shows a healthier way of solving problems concerning cultural diversity than My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
