초록

본고는 16세기 필기 『소문쇄록』‧『패관잡기』‧『송계만록』을 대상으로 중인층 지식인의 사유와 내면세계를 세밀하게 읽어내려는 의도에서 서술되었다. 중인층 지식인은 당대 사대부 지식인들과 공통된 물적‧정신적 기반을 공유하면서도 신분적 한계에 부딪히게 될수록 현실과 의식의 괴리 속에서 정체성의 혼란이 가중되며 스스로 타자화하는 면모를 보인다. 본고는 바로 이러한 그들의 내적갈등과 의식의 변이에 착점을 두고 그들이 찬술한 필기에 드러난 조선 전‧중기 중인층 지식인의 내면을 분석한 것이다. 신분으로서의 중인이 성립된 조선 후기와 달리 조선 전기의 중인은 양반 사족부터 천민에 이르기까지의 편폭을 지닌 미분화된 계층이었고, 이들의 분열 혹은 혼란된 자기규정에서부터 사대부 문인지식인층과 변별되는 시각과 관점이 태동되었다고 볼 수 있다.
사대부 문인지식인이나 중인층 지식인이 출신 신분은 달랐지만 양자 모두 지식인으로서 주체적 각성과 문명의식이 있었음은 분명한 사실이다. 조신과 어숙권, 권응인은 일생이 불우한 처지로 일관된 면이 없지 않다. 하지만 그러한 불우가 그들로 하여금 새로운 의식과 기상을 대변하게 하면서 자기 정체성을 모색하도록 추동했다고 판단된다. 예컨대, 이들 중인층 지식인은 언어와 시문 능력이 뛰어났지만 신분이 미천했던 탓에 자신의 능력을 발휘하는 데는 제한적일 수밖에 없었다. 이 때문에 현실의 모순을 비판하고 적극적인 인정투쟁을 통해 온갖 차별과 억압으로부터 해방된 사회를 꿈꾸었다. 아이러니하게도 그들은 사대부 문인 고유의 글쓰기-필기를 통해 그들과 그 넘어 세계까지도 사유하고 있었던 것이다.
그런데 그들은 자신들이 겪고 있는 혼돈의 돌파구를 박학을 추구하는 데에서 찾았다. 중인층 지식인들은 그들에게 억압된 욕망을 광범위한 견문과 독서, 학문 활동을 통해 지식을 습득하고 축적함으로써 분출하려고 한 것이다. 지식에 대한 집착은 어느 한편으로는 지배 질서의 모순을 드러내면서 그에 균열을 야기하려는 그들의 자의식의 발로라고도 볼 수 있다. 이로써 세계에 대해 비판적으로 인식하며 사대부에 대한 열등감에서 벗어나 새로운 주체로서 스스로 정립할 수 있게 되었다.

영어초록

This paper was written to read closely the thinking and inner world of middle class intellectuals by reviewing Somunsoaerok(『謏聞瑣錄』), Paegwanjapgi(『稗官雜記』) and Songgyemanrok(『松溪漫錄』) written in the 16th century. Middle class intellectuals shared the same material and spiritual foundation with their contemporary noble intellectuals. As they faced their limitations in status, they suffered greater identity confusion due to the gap between the reality and their consciousness and tended to otherize themselves. Focusing on their internal conflicts and conscious changes, the present study analyzed the inner sides of middle class intellectuals in the former and middle part of Joseon based on Pilgis(筆記) composed by them. Unlike in the latter part of Joseon when the middle class was established as a social class, the middle class in the former part of Joseon formed an undifferentiated class whose range spanned from the prestigious families of Yangbans to the lowest class. Their divided or confused self-definition gave birth to their own viewpoints and perspectives distinguished from those of literary noble intellectuals.
Although there were class differences between literary noble intellectuals and middle class intellectuals, it is a clear fact that both the groups had their independent awakening and consciousness of civilization as intellectuals. Jo Shin, Eo Suk-gwon, and Gwon Eung-in suffered an underprivileged position throughout life, but their underprivileged situations drove them toward representing new consciousness and spirit and searching for their own identity. These middle class intellectuals excelled in language and verse & prose, but their humble status prevented them from exerting their abilities to the fullest. That is why they were active to criticize the contradictions of reality and dreamed of a society liberated from all sorts of discrimination and oppression through active recognition struggle. Ironically, they had contemplation over literary noblemen and even their world through the type of writing-note unique to them.
The middle class intellectuals found a breakthrough for their confusion in pursuit of erudition. They tried to vent out their suppressed desire by acquiring and accumulating knowledge through broad experience, reading, and academic activities. Their obsession with knowledge was, in some sense, the expression of their self-consciousness to reveal the contradiction of the ruling order and cause a crack in it. In this way, they were able to perceive the world critically and grow out of their sense of inferiority to the noblemen, establishing themselves as new subjects.
