This paper analyzes coloniality after colonialism and inter-relationship between the world strategy of the United States and Puerto Rico,focusing on R. Grofoguel’s theory. R. Grosfoguel is one of “modernity/coloniality research group” including Annibal Quijano, Enrique Dussel,and Walter D. Mignolo. He has played a great role in organizing important international conferences of reachers and publishing the results of conferences.
R. Grosfouel emphasizes the geopolitical and body-political location of speaking subjects. He criticizes the universalistic, neutral, objective point of view of Western philosophy and sciences and in its place suggests a radical, universal decolonial anticapitalistic project. He criticizes both post-coloniality and the theory of world system as culturalism and economic reductionism. In order to overcome the danger of economic reductionism and of culturalism, he emphasizes the importance of new concepts such as “coloniality of power” of A.
Quijano, “heterarchies” of K. Kontopoulos, and “symbolic capital” of Pierre Bourdieu. He also used these concepts to analyze the coloniality of Puerto Rico.
Analyzing the results of the Puerto Rico Status Plebiscites in 1967,1993 and 1998, Puerto Rican didn’t choose the independence from the United States until now. After the end of the Cold War, the United States’ support to Puerto Rico greatly decreased and its the economic situation of Puerto Rico has continuously deteriorated. Nevertheless most Puerto Rican’ attitude toward the United States hasn’t changed the US holds an ideological hegemony over them. The United States gained hegemony over them, by making Puerto Rico depend on vast financial aids and benefits granted in order to make it symbolic showcase during Cold War. R. Grosfoguel proposes that this coloniality of Puerto Rico be overcome by its subaltern subjects.
