6.25전쟁 후 미국 원조당국은 원자재, 시설재의 도입과 더불어 미국식 경영관리법을 도입하여 생산력을 발전시켜갈 지도자층의 양성과 이들에게 실용적인 교육을 할 ‘경영실무학교’가 필요하다고 판단했다. 이에 연세대학교와 고려대학교에 경영학 원조를 제공하는 워싱턴대학프로젝트가 도입되었다.
워싱턴대학프로젝트는 미국식 경영학과 및 경영자 교육시스템을 이식했다. 상경대학은 기업과 자본가에 대한 여론을 전환시키는 전진기지 역할을 했고, 학자들과 학생들은 노사협조, 산업평화 이데올로기를 적극 내면화했다. 1961년 5.16군사쿠데타 이후에는 대학의 경영연구소와 기업체의 산학협동, 국공영기업체 및 국가기관과의 관학협동, 군부와의 군학협동도 적극 추진되었다. 이는 능력과 효율, 이윤을 극대화하는 방향으로 기업과 국가기관, 군부의 체질과 문화를 바꾸는 중요한 계기가 되었다.
워싱턴대학프로젝트는 미국식 경영관리법을 도입하고 경영합리화를 달성함으로써 생산력을 고도화하는데 궁극적인 목표가 있었다. 당시 경영학자와 경영학도들에게 산학협동과 관학협동, 군학협동이 과연 무엇을 의미하는가에 대한 근본적인 질문은 찾아볼 수 없다. 기업을 자본주의의 심장이자 산실로 인식하고, 그에 대한 일체의 의문을 갖지 않은 채 기업의 경영합리화만을 추구하는 것은 결국 경제성장제일주의 이데올로기에 포섭되는 길이었다.

영어초록

After the Korean War, the U.S. aid authorities decided that a business school was needed to train leaders who would develop productivity by introducing raw materials and facility materials, as well as American business management methods and to provide practical education to them. Accordingly, the Washington University Project was introduced to provide business administration assistance to Yonsei University and Korea University. The Washington University Project transplanted the American business administration and executive education system. College of Commerce served as a forward base to change public opinion toward companies and capitalists, and scholars and students actively internalized the ideology of labor-management cooperation and industrial peace. After the 5.16 military coup in 1961, industry-academic cooperation between university management research institutes and companies, government-academic cooperation with public and public enterprises and state agencies, and military-academic cooperation with the military were also actively promoted. This served as an important opportunity to change the structure and culture of companies, state agencies, and the military in a way that maximizes capabilities, efficiency, and profits. The ultimate goal of the Washington University Project was to advance productivity by introducing American methods of business management and achieving management rationalization. There was no fundamental question about what industry-academic cooperation, government-academic cooperation, and military-academic cooperation meant to business scholars and students at the time. Recognizing corporations as the heart and cradle of capitalism and pursuing rationalization of corporate management without any questions about it was ultimately a path to being subsumed by the ideology of economic growth-first.
