홍와 이두훈의 『동화세기』 편찬과 역사인식 (Compilation and Historical Perception of Hong-wa Lee Du-hun’s Donghwasegi)

초록

이 연구는 근대초기 고령 출신의 지방 유학자였던 홍와 이두훈의 『동화세기』 편찬과 책에 반영된 역사인식을 살펴본 연구이다. 이 논문의 주된 분석 대상인 필사본 『동화세기』는 그동안 전혀 공개되지 않았던 자료이다.
이두훈은 이상룡, 유인식 등과 마찬가지로 전통 유학에서 출발하였으면서도 애국계몽운동으로 나아간 인물이다. 이두훈에 대한 분석은 전근대시기에서 근대시기로 전환하는 과정에서 유교적 지식인들이 가지고 있었던역사적 지식과 인식의 모습이 어떠하였는가를 보여주는 한 사례라고 할 수있다.
『동화세기』는 한문으로 서술되었지만 당대 나온 교과서를 포함하여 광범위하게 자료를 활용하였다. 편찬 방식은 편년체 서술을 유지하고 있으나 근대 역사서의 다양한 분석적 접근과 이해방식을 수용하고 있다. 『동화세기』 는 유학적 지식인이 전통적 학문에 기반한 유학적 역사인식으로 우리나라의 역사를 정리한 책이다. 국망 시기에 단군에서 조선에 이르기까지 이어온계승관계를 정리하여 조선 국가와 민족의 독립성을 말하였으나 중세기 역사학의 특징인 왕조사적 흥망관과 정통론의 관점이 유지되고 있는 한계도 있다.
이두훈의 『동화세기』는 전근대적 역사학에서 근대 역사학으로의 전환 과정에 서 있던 유교적 역사학의 향방을 보여준다. 그리고 국망 과정에서 조선 국가의 정통성을 보여주려는 소망과 그러면서도 근대 역사학에 성공적으로 진입하지 못하고 있는 유학적 역사학의 한계를 동시에 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

This study explored how Hong-wa Lee Du-hun, a local Confucian scholar from Goryeong, Gyeongbuk province in the early modern period, compiled Donghwasegi, and how historical perception reflected in the compilation of the book. In particular, Donghwasegi, the main analysis target of this study, has not been released at all, and this is the first study in academia that examines Donghwasegi.
Like Lee Sang-ryong and Yu In-shik, Lee Du-hun made Confucianism a starting point for his studies, and he was also a person who later went through the Patriotic enlightenment movement in the early-modern times.
It can be said that the analysis of Lee Du-hun is a representative example of during the transition from the early-modern period to the modern period, how the knowledge of the history of Confucian intellectuals there was, and how they perceived the history.
Donghwasegi was written in Classical Chinese, but it extensively used the data including textbooks compiled in the same period. In terms of the editing method, it adopts a method of describing related events in the order in which they occurred each year, which was mainly described by the premodern period history books, but in terms of content, it accepts various contents of modern history books. Donghwasegi is a book that organizes the history of our country with Confucian history perception based on the traditional studies by a Confucian intellectual. At the time of the country’s fall, the succession relations that continued from Dangun era to Joseon era were summarized, and the independence of the Joseon’s nation and the people was described. However, there are also limitations that it views the history according to the rise and fall of the dynasty which is the characteristic of the history studies of the Middle Ages, and that it maintains the viewpoint of viewing history centered on the nation with the succession rights of the legitimate line of descent.
Lee Du-hun's Donghwasegi shows the whereabouts of Confucian history studies, which were in the process of transitioning from premodern history to modern history. And in the process of the country’s fall, it shows the desire to show the authenticity of the Joseon state, and at the same time describes the limitations of Confucian history studies, which were yet to successfully enter the modern history studies.
