5심을 통한 識의 自流相續 고찰 (The Study about self noninterrupted succession of the consciousness using five kinds of mind)

초록

『成唯識論』에서는 식(識)의 소의(所依) 중 하나인 개도의(開導依)를 중심으로 식의 자류상속(自流相續)을 논의하고 있다. 여기서 난타는 『瑜伽師地論』의 글을 인용하여 전5식의 자류상속을 부정한다. 난타 주장의 핵심은 전5식은 일찰나만 존재한다는 것이다. 따라서 일단 전5식이 일어나면 바로 소멸해버리고 제6식인 의식이 직후에 발생하기 때문에 전5식은 자류상속할 수 없다고 주장한다. 만약 난타의 주장이 인정된다면 호법의 8식 자류상속을 정설로 하는 유식의 교리에 큰 모순이 있게 된다.
본고에서는 우선 개도의에 대한 난타의 설을 5심을 통해 분석해서, 그 주장의 근거와 논점을 좀 더 명확하게 밝혀 보았다. 여기서 5심(心)은 솔이심, 심구심, 결정심, 염정심, 등류심의 5가지를 말하며, 이들은 식이 상속할 때 각 식이 처한 상태를 나타낸다. 규기는 『大乘法苑義林章』에 별도로 「五心章」을 두고 5심의 체계를 정립했으며, 이에 대해 후대의 논사들은 여러 주석서에서 5심을 다루었다. 최근의 선행연구에서는 5심을 인식 성립의 과정이나 수행론의 관점에서 파악하고 있지만, 본고에서는 식의 자류상속을 증명하는 방법적 수단으로써 5심을 새롭게 고찰해 보았다.
난타 주장의 핵심은 전5식이 자류상속할 수 없다는 견해이기 때문에, 호법은 이를 비판하면서 식의 자류상속을 주장했다. 따라서 식의 자류상속 조건이 무엇인지를 5심을 통해 고찰해보았는데, 『瑜伽師地論』과 『大乘法苑義林章』 등의 논서들을 살펴본 결과 6식[前5식과 의식]에 모두 5심이 있다면 이 6식은 자류상속할 수 있음을 도출하였다. 6식의 자류상속에 대한 논증은 세 가지로 이루어진다. 첫째, 전5식에도 제6식과 마찬가지로 심구심과 결정심이 있는지를 살펴보고, 둘째로 전5식에 솔이심이 있는 것처럼 제6식에도 솔이심이 있는지를 밝힌다. 마지막으로 전5식과 제6식이 상호전전하기 위해서는 전5식과 제6식의 솔이심은 동일한 찰나에 있어야 한다. 그런데 제6식은 5구(五俱)의식과 독생(獨生)의식으로 나누어지므로, 두 의식의 솔이심 모두 일찰나에 존재하는지 여부를 밝히면 전5식과 제6식의 솔이심은 같은 찰나에 있는 것이 입증된다. 이와 같이 세 가지 모두가 증명되면 전5식과 제6식의 자류상속 조건이 충족되게 된다.
이러한 논의를 통해 전5식과 제6식의 자류상속을 증명할 수 있었으며, 제7식과 제8식은 항시 자류상속하므로 결국 호법의 정설인 8식의 자류상속이 가능하다는 것을 5심을 통해 밝혔다.

영어초록

In the 『Cheng wei-shin lun』, the succession of the consciousness is discussed by focusing on GaeDoUi(initiating and guiding support) which is one of three shelter of consciousness. In this text, we can see that Nanda quote 『Yogacarabhumi-sastra』 and deny the way that the previous five consciousness succeed noninterruptedly for itself. The core of his argument is that the previous five consciousness exist only one momentariness. Because the previous five consciousness do not succeed noninterruptedly for itself, the sixth consciousness only leads the next momentariness of the previous five consciousness, so that the GaeDoUi of the previous five consciousness is only the sixth consciousness. If the arguments of Nanda are accepted as true, the doctrine of Mind-only Buddhist is face with a great contradiction, because they only accept the self noninterrupted succession of consciousness which is argued by Dharmapāla.
Therefore, I will analyse the Nanda's arguments by means of the 5-sim[the five kinds of mind] and reveal the basis and issues of his arguments. The name of the 5-sim are the suddenly acceding mind, the searching mind, the determining mind, the defiled or pure mind, the efflux mind, respectively. They are the instant states of the consciousness at one point which consciousness continues noninterruptedly. Kyuki founded the 5-sim in his 「五心章」, which is one chapter of 『大乘法苑義林章』. The later scholars inherited 5-sim within their own annotation texts of 『大乘法苑義林章』. In view of the previous studies so far, The 5-sim has been regarded as the established process of cognition or the one way of Buddhist practice. In this paper, new approach method of the 5-sim will be examined in the proof of self noninterrupted succession of the consciousness.
For proof, I will review the core of Nanda's arguments which is based on 『Yogacarabhumi-sastra』 and other scholars' dispute about Nanda's theory. As I mentioned, Nanda's arugument is that the previous five consciousness succeed noninterruptedly for itself. Dharmapāla argues the self noninterrupted succession of consciousness with criticising Nanda. On the basis of 『Yogacarabhumi-sastra』 and 『大乘法苑義林章』, I reach the following assumption that if all six consciousness has 5-sim respectively, all six consciousness can succeed noninterruptedly. To prove this assumption, I had to perform 3 demonstration. 1) In common with 6th consciousness, the previous five consciousness also has the searching mind and the determining mind, 2) In common with the previous five consciousness, 6th consciousness has the suddenly acceding mind. 3) Finally, the suddenly acceding mind. of 6th consciousness is owned by one momentariness of time. This means that the previous five consciousness and 6th consciousness act together at the same time. When 1)～3) assumption proved, the condition of self noninterrupted succession of the consciousness will be satisfied.
For this demonstration, I will show that not only all six consciousness have the 5-sim respectively, but also the 5-sim of the previous five consciousness is acting with those of sixth consciousness simultaneously. When I have completed the demonstration, the self noninterrupted succession of consciousness be proved successfully.
