탐라국 건국신화의 주역과 고대서사시 (A hero of Tamla founding Myth and the ancient Epic)

초록

탐라국은 역사상 고대국가였는데 한국사는 이에 대해 무관심하다. 탐라국의 실체에 대한 연구도 미미하다. 고대국가 건설도 4-5세기 이후에나 가능했던 것으로 평가한다. 기록이 미미하기 때문이다. 세상의 기억은 석비(石碑)와 구비(口碑)다. 석비는 종이에 기록하는 방식이 되고 우리의 역사 인식은 대부분 기록에 의존한다. 그러나 탐라의 경우에는 구비전승을 중시해야 한다. 본고는 오래된 구비 – 무가의 본풀이를 통해 탐라의 정체성을 규명하려 한다.
고대서사시 이전에는 창세서사시와 신앙서사시가 있었다. 신앙서사시에는 사냥하던 시절의 수렵신에 대한 이야기와 창세의 이야기가 겹쳐 있다. 창세서사시에는 우주 형성원리가 차례로 서술되고 땅에서 솟아난 영웅의 이야기가 겹쳐 있다. 그 후 고대 영웅서사시에는 창세적 요소와 영웅적 요소가 함께 나타난다. 그래서 원시·고대서사시를 두루 계기적으로 살폈다. 고대국가는 이주민과 선주민의 결합에 의해 이루어졌는데, 땅에서 솟아난 선주민 집단이 주도권을 가졌다. 권력이 교체된 시점을 서사시를 통해 알 수 있다. 선주민 주도 하에 탐라국이 건설되었다. 이 집단은 신앙서사시를 주도한 집단과 연결된다.
탐라국은 해양능력 바탕 하에 고대문명을 수용하며 고대국가의 기반을 다졌다. 바다를 건너온 세력과 결합하며 고대문명을 수용하고, 주변국을 오가는 해양능력을 발휘하면서 고대국가 체제를 강화시켜 나갔다. 바다를 오가며 큰 공을 세우고 탐라국으로 귀환하는 주인공의 이야기가 본풀이로 풍부하게 남아 있다. 주변 국가와 교역하면서 탐라국의 위상이 높아 갔다. 그런데 이런 탐라국의 정체성이 기록화 과정에서 변질된다. 구비전승에서 전하는 탐라국의 본질을 기록은 인정하지 않으려 한다. 1세기 건국에 대한 전승도 부정된다. 숱한 고대 영웅서사시를 통해 확인한 탐라국의 정체성을 주목해야 한다. 본고는 석비보다 구비의 역사를 중시해야 한다는 시대적 소명을 명확히 했다. 제주는 기록이 빈약한 것이 불운이지만, 구비전승이 풍부한 것이 행운이다.
우리 역사를 단일체가 아닌 다원체로 이해하려는 태도가 새로운 과제로 등장하기 시작한 이즈음, 탐라 역사의 독자성을 다시 조명해야 한다. 본고는 무가 본풀이를 통해 독자적인 역사와 문화를 지녔던 고대 탐라국의 정체성을 설명하고 있다.

영어초록

Korean history is indifferent to the ancient country, Tamla. There is little research on the substance of the Tamla country. Historians believe that the construction of an ancient Tamla was only possible after the 4th or 5th century. This is because the record on Tamla is insignificant. The memory of the world is composed with the stone monument and the oral tradition. The stone monument has become a way to record on paper, and our historical perception mostly relies on records. But in the case of Tamla, we must put a lot of emphasis on all the oral tradition. This paper reveals Tamla's identity through an old oral tradition.
Before the ancient epic, there was a Genesis epic and a Faith epic. In the Faith epic, the story of hunter gatherer and the story of creation comes together. The Genesis epic describes the principle of the formation of the universe, and the story of a hero rising from the ground overlaps. Then, both the creative and the heroic elements appear in the ancient epic. Therefore, I examined the primitive and ancient epic in a variety of instruments. Ancient countries were formed by the combination of immigrants and the people of the prehistoric world, and the group of prehistoric people took the lead. The epic shows the time when power was replaced. The country of Tamla was built under the leadership of the prehistoric people. This group was connected to the group that led the Faith epic.
The Tamla Nation has built the foundation of an ancient country by accommodating ancient civilizations based on its maritime capacity. The hero embraced ancient civilizations by joining forces that crossed the sea. The hero used his maritime power to strengthen the ancient state system. The story of a hero returning from the sea remains rich in Jeju Island. The status of the country increased trading with neighboring countries. However, this kind of identity of Tamla was distorted in the process of recording. We will not acknowledge the substance of Tamna. Many people do not even acknowledge the history of establishing a country in AD.1 Century. We should pay attention to the identity of the Tamla as it was identified through many ancient hero epic. This paper has strengthened the argument that Oral history should be considered more important than record. Jeju is unfortunate for its poor record, but it is fortunate that it has a lot of oral tradition.
We must understand our history as a plurality, not a monolithic one. Such a task has begun to emerge anew. Under these circumstances, we need to shed light on the identity of Tamla history. This paper explains the identity of the ancient Tamla, which had its own history and culture.
