초록

The present paper deals Korean folk beliefs based on Sowol's poem <A Flower named Azaleas>.
A point of contact between religion and poetry might find out from religious incantation performed at the primitive communal system.
In the primitive communal system the nature was regarded as a temple and ceremony to be performed in there was formality of rescues.
From formality of rescues, Orally transmitted literature was formed by poetic rhythm and shamanistic propensity of language.
Though the religion is based on rescue of lives, The course for literature's propensity is essentially necessary in the religion.
So it is confirmed that elements of Korean folk belief expressed in Sowol's poems were intermediated goodness, badness, disaster and luck of life.
He lived on the literary dark ages when it was mixed period by trend of literary coming from abroad such as realism, modernism, symbolism, estheticism , he endured the roll of folk poet who spoke the miserable imagery of korean people during the colonial period.
As result the elements of Korean folk belief to express people's life were keyword in writing poem. It seems to be regarded as a series of religion action that we get rescues from the natures by pleading the emotion of the resentment and pains.
In this paper, the natural characteristics are based on the worship of fertility symbol in primitive religion.
Sowol versed the water symbolism, the stone symbolism and the tree symbolism as sacred symbols, which human being is realized limitations as a weak and painful being, because the absolute and transcendent being "Nim" is only exist far away not close himself in presence.
The elements of Korean folk belief awakened by Sowol start from attitude towards nature not immersing a certain superstitious relief but realizing supper natural being to be feared and enlighten a intimate relationship between a living worthy of human dignity and poetry because his poem embrace the ecological being and the cosmic community.
