백석 시에 나타난 음식과 타자의 윤리 (Food and the ethics of others represented in Baek Seok's poems)

초록

이 논문은 백석 시에서 음식과 관련된 상상력이 전체 작품의 의미를 만드는 중요한 동인임을 전제하고, 그러한 상상력을 통해 백석이 추구했던 시적 의미나 가치는 무엇이었는지 논의하고 있다. 이를 위해 본고는 백석의 시에서 이질적인 타자와의 공존을 환기하는 것은 ‘음식’ 자체라기보다는 그것을 ‘함께 먹는다’는 적극적이고 실천적인 행위라는 사실에 주목하고 있다.
백석의 시는 ‘음식’과 ‘함께 먹는다’는 상상을 통해 나와 다른 타자에 대한 환대의 중요성을 일깨우고 그들과의 연대를 가능케 한다. 음식 상상력을 통해 부단히 소외된 타자들을 밥상으로 불러 함께 음식을 나눔으로써 그들의 가난과 결핍을 메우고, 공존과 연대의 가능성을 보임으로써 새로운 공동체를 상상하도록 한다. 모든 존재의, 그것이 미물이더라도 함께 먹는다는 행위가 갖는 엄연한 진실에 대한 통찰은 그의 시에서 다양한 존재들이 서로 평등하게, 함께 존재하도록 한다. 백석 시에 나타난 연대의식은 민족의 고유한 정서를 넘어서서 우주적이고 보편적인 성격으로 나아간다. 이와 같은 상상력은 궁극적으로 타자와 음식의 나눔과 공유를 통해 타자의 윤리를 실천하는 주체의 책임의 윤리를 지향하는 것이며, 나아가 소통 공동체의 폐쇄성을 극복하는 개방성을 확보하는 것이기도 하다.
백석의 작품에서 함께 먹음에 대해 말하는 것은 우리라는 공동의 존재를 환기한다. 이런 의미에서 서정시는 나만의 이야기가 아니라 우리 모두의 삶의 이야기로 확장된다. 백석 시가 가진 이런 덕목은 제국의 지배와 권력 아래서 식민화와 타자화를 겪으며 소통 공동체의 파괴를 맞이한 조선인들에게 화해로운 연대와 공존에 바탕한 소통 공동체를 꿈꾸게 했을 것이다.

영어초록

Granted that food-related imagination is a major motif for the entire poetry of Baek Seok's, this paper discusses a poetic meaning and value that Baek Seok had pursed through that imagination. This paper pays particular attention to the positive and practical act of 'eating together,' not to the 'food' itself, which is reminiscent of coexistence of heterogeneous, contradictory entities in Baek's verses.
By virtue of the imagination of 'food' and 'eating together,' Baek's poems arouse the importance of hospitality toward the self and others and enable solidarity among them. This, ultimately, aims at the self's ethics of responsibility that is practiced by the ethics of others via exchanging and sharing of food with others. Furthermore, it helps to secure openness of a community, overcoming its closure.
Through the imagination of food, Baek Seok constantly calls those who are marginalized to a dining table and shares food with them, by which he fills up their poverty and deficiency and shows a potential for coexistence and solidarity with them. This leads to an imagination of a new community. The insight into the undeniable truth that all creatures, no matter how insignificant they are, eat together makes it possible for various beings in Baek's poems to exist equally together. The sense of solidarity in Baek's poetry proceeds to take on a trait of cosmicality and universality, going beyond the nation's inherent sentiment. Beings, within his poems, are open to rendezvous with diverse others, and they enter into close and equal relations. What is noteworthy, as was examined in this paper, is that the principle of poetry and of life which enables this solidarity is actually realized in the act of 'eating together.' This remark of eating together is reminiscent of our communal beings. In this sense the lyric poetry is not about my own story, but it is extended to the life stories of all of us. This virtue of Baek's poems might have had the Joseon people, who were faced with destruction of the community while undergoing colonialization and alienation under the imperialist domination and authority, dream of harmonious solidarity and a coexistence-based community.
