서정주의 시 「귀촉도」의 음상(音相) 분포 분석 (An Analysis of Sound Distribution in Gwichokdo)

초록

이 연구는 서정주의 시 「귀촉도」의 리듬을 탐구하기 위해 음상의 형태와 분포를 분석한다. 리듬은 소리와 의미의 결합 그리고 그것의 흐름을 통괄하는 개념이다. 리듬은 시의 청각적 효과를 위한 소리의 반복이나 낭독 당시의 감각만을 대상으로 삼지 않는 의미 중심의 복합체이기도 하다. 말소리에 포함된 감각·분위기·이미지의 연속과 아울러 의미의 진행을 읽는 것이 시의 리듬을 분석하기 위한 본래적 시각이며 그 과정을 통해 기표와 언술된 발화 사이에 드러난 시의 면모를 다각도로 살필 수 있게 된다.
먼저 개별 시의 리듬을 밝히기 위하여 시어의 소리 결합을 분석한다. 제한된 수의 시어 가운데 유사한 성질을 지닌 것끼리 뭉친 소리군(群)으로서 동심원들을 상정하고, 그 동심원 간의 긴장과 갈등 관계를 맺는 양상을 분석한다. 그리고 이 양상을 구체적으로 밝히기 위해 ‘음상(音相)’ 개념을 활용한다. 음상(音相)은 한 단어 안에서 표현의 정도와 가치가 다른 자모음이 다른 것으로 교체되었을 때 어감의 차이를 낳는 현상을 의미한다. 시의 한 부분으로 포섭되어 일련의 질감을 갖게 된 시어를 다른 시어로 교체하였을 때, 본래의 질감을 회복할 수 없다는 점을 역으로 활용한 분석 방법이다. 이 글에서는 우리말의 아름다움을 잘 살린 미당 서정주의 시 「귀촉도」에서 시어들에 분포된 음성적 자질과 그것들이 지닌 의미에 초점에 두어 시의 가치 발현을 위한 ‘리듬의 양상’을 밝히고자 한다.
이 논문은 「귀촉도」의 리듬을 구성하는 주요 계열체를 화자의 슬픈 감정을 표상한 ‘눈물’과 시의 제목이자 기억의 매개체이며, 새의 울음소리인 ‘귀촉도’로 파악한다. 의미의 최소 단위로서의 음상적 특징과 그것의 분포, 절과 문장의 의미 전개 방식을 분석하여 ‘주술적 운율’을 확보하고 있다는 「귀촉도」의 리듬 구조를 진단한다.

영어초록

This article focuses on analyzing the combination of rhythms in Seo Jeong-Ju's poem Gwichokdo. Rhythm, which generates the aesthetic value of a poem, is mainly composed from the union of sound and images and their usage. Rhythm is also a meaning-based composite, which considers repetition for a poem’s auditory effect or sense in reciting the poem. The authentic viewpoint on analyzing the rhythm of poem is to discover the progress of meaning as well as the series of feeling, mood, and image included in tone. Therefore, this article examines poetic aspects which are found between a significant and an aesthetic articulation from various perspectives.
First, in order to determine the rhythms of the individual poem, the sound combination of poetic diction is analyzed. Within a limited amount of poetic dictions, similar properties which stand together as a unified sound stream are introduced in concentric circles, and the condition of the relationship between tension and conflict found in these concentric circles is analyzed. Also, in order to determine definite characteristics, the idea of ‘Sound Feature’ is applied. A ‘Sound Feature’ is a phenomenon which describes the nuanced differences in the amount of expression and value within a word, when a consonant or vowel is switched.
Taking one part of the poem, when a series of textures of poetic diction it is replaced with a different poetic diction, the original feel cannot be recovered, and using this fact inversely is a practical method of analysis. In this article, looking at poetic diction of the disappearing, beautiful language of Korean in Seo Jeong-Ju's poem Gwichokdo, and by focusing on the distribution of the caliber of phonetic features and possessed meaning, this article tries to determine the ‘aspects of rhythms’ which manifest as value in the poem.
This article’s main focus is to understand the paradigmatic composition of the rhythms of the crying bird in the poem Gwichokdo through the narrator’s ‘tears’ describing his sad feeling and the title of the poem which is a medium of remembrance. The structure of Gwichokdo’s rhythm is considered to be a ‘charming cadence’ and the smallest measure of meaning is analyzed through the features of ‘Sound Image’ and manner of developed meaning through sound distribution, passages and sentences.
