최승호 초기시의 알레고리 양상과 기능 (The Aspect and Function of Allegory in Choi Seung-ho’s Early Poems)

초록

이 논문은 최승호 초기시에 나타난 사회적 상상력의 형상화 방식으로서 알레고리의 양상과 기능을 분석한 연구이다. 최승호는 부조리한 정치사와 타락한 후기 산업사회의 병폐를 인식한 시인으로서 그의 시세계는 1970, 80년대 시대사적 모순의 중심에 놓여있다. 그는 현상에 대한 즉자적인 대응보다는 존재에 대한 실존적 고뇌와 언어에 대한 진지한 탐색에 더 몰두했고, 여기에 활용된 알레고리는 기법의 차원뿐 아니라 사유의 과정에서도 의식화되어 나타났다.
알레고리는 개별 부분의 자립성을 보존하면서 현실과 이상, 현상과 본질의 불일치를 그대로 노출시켜 파편적이고 현실적인 역사성을 추구하는 방식이기 때문에 특정한 역사적 사실을 밝히는 데 용이한 시적 전략이 된다. 또한 생경한 소재와 낯선 서술 방식, 이율배반적인 요소들의 착종이 불러오는 불쾌함이 만들어내는 추의 미학을 포섭하기에 모순과 역설이 난무하는 현대사회의 비정상적인 면에 대한 풍부한 논의가 가능하다.
최승호 초기시에 나타나는 알레고리 유형은 첫째, 정치권력의 횡포와 무기력한 소시민적 삶에 대한 문제를 우회적이지만 분명하게 환원되는 시적 장치들로 제시하여 진실에 접근해가는 방식이다. 둘째, 도시화‧산업화의 격변 속에서 겪는 문명의 야만성과 욕망의 비극을 그들이 지니고 있는 이율배반적 요소의 착종을 통해 충격적으로 제시하고, 각성의 계기라는 새로운 의미망을 형성하는 방식이다.
알레고리의 역사적이고 실천적인 측면은 당대의 문제의식을 내세운 최승호의 시가 현재적 관점에서도 유효한 의미와 가치를 지니고 있음을 확인하는 데 전제가 된다. 따라서 당대와 현재의 삶의 방식과 요구 조건이 크게 달라지지 않았다는 점을 염두에 두었을 때, 최승호의 시를 알레고리로 읽어내는 것은 오늘날의 문학과 사회의 관계망 속에서 문학의 사회적 역할과 기능에 대한 답을 찾는 중요한 작업이 될 수 있다.

영어초록

This article aims at analyzing the aspect and function of allegory in Choi Seung-ho’s early poems as a way of symbolizing social imagination. Choi Seung-ho is a poet who is aware of the absurd political history and the disease of depraved post-industrial society and so his poetic world lies in the middle of the contradiction of the history of the 1970s and 1980s. He was more engaged in existential agony about being and serious search for language rather than response in terms of being-in-itself to phenomena and the allegory used in this process was shown conscientized even in the process of speculation as well as at the technical level.
Allegory is the way of pursuing fragmentary and realistic historicity by revealing the disagreement between reality and the ideal or between phenomena and the essence as they are while preserving the individual independence, thus it becomes an easy poetic strategy in verifying specific historic facts. Besides, it is possible to have abundant discussions on the abnormal aspect of modern society full of contradiction and paradox since it embraces the aesthetics of ugliness created by disagreeableness that is caused by the entangling of crude material, the unfamiliar method of narration and antinomic elements.
The following are the types of allegory shown in Choi Seung-ho’s early poems: First, it is the method of approaching the truth by suggesting the problems of high-handedness of political authority and enervated life of the petit bourgeois with indirectly but clearly returned poetic devices. Second, it is the method of shockingly proposing the savagery of civilization and the tragedy of desire they experience in the turbulence of urbanization and industrialization through the tangling of antinomic elements they possess and forming a new semantic network, an opportunity of awakening.
The historical and practical aspect of allegory is required to confirm that Choi Seung-ho’s poems with awareness of the issue of the time has a valid meaning and value even in the contemporary respect. Therefore, having it in mind that the ways of life and requirements of the time and the present are not largely changed, reading Choi Seung-ho’s poems with allegory is meaningful in becoming a page of the ‘history’ of literature and raising an ongoing issue ‘here right now.’
