김남조 후기시에 나타난 노년의식 (The Consciousness of Old Age in Namjo Kim’s latter Poems)

초록

이 논문에서는 김남조의 후기시에 나타난 노년의식을 살펴보고 그 존재론적 전환 양상에 대한 의미를 고찰하고자 하였다.
김남조 시인은 1950년대 한국전쟁의 혼란과 상처 속에서도 절망과 고통을 넘어 기독교 윤리의식과 휴머니즘을 바탕으로 사랑과 생명을 노래하는 서정시를 발표하였다. 1970년대에 들어와서는 사랑의 깊이와 폭이 더욱 확대되고 종교적 관점에서 구원의 절대적 가치를 존중하는 작품이 중심을 이루었다. 그런데, 그는 1980년대 말 제12시집 『바람세례 (1988)』를 기점으로 노년의식에 대한 시들을 발표하기 시작한다. 제13시집인 『평안을 위하여』(1995), 제14시집 『희망학습』(1998), 제15시집 『영혼과 가슴』(2004), 제16시집 『귀중한 오늘』(2007), 제17시집 『심장이 아프다』(2013)에 이르기까지 변모해가는 삶에 대한 인식과 가치관의 변화를 시 속에 형상화해나간 것으로 볼 수 있다.
김남조의 후기 시 세계에 드러난 노년의식과 죽음의 미적 변용은 노화와 죽음을 자연현상으로 받아들이고 재생의 의지로 새로운 시적 행보를 보여준다. 이는 시인의 영생의 종교적 세계관과 연계되어 노년의식을 심화시키면서 다른 구원을 찾게 된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그가 초기시에서 보여준 생명력의 확산과 사랑에 대한 집중적 탐구는 후기에 와서 이처럼 변화를 맞게 된 것이다. 노년의 미의식과 재생의지, 긍정적 인생관과 영생주의 세계관 등 새로운 희망시학으로 대주제가 전환된 것이다. 그는 특히 제16시집 『귀중한 오늘』(2007)에서 노년기 생활 속 자신의 의식세계를 다양하게 표현하고 있다. 확고한 신앙심에 바탕을 둔 노년기 삶의 평화로움과 당당함, 안식과 관용, 생명에 대한 무한한 사랑, 그리고 식지 않는 생에 대한 열정을 담담히 그리고 있다.
그의 후기 작품들은 긴 세월을 통과한 농익은 삶 속에서 시간에 순응하며 늙음까지도 감사하며, 나이 먹음에서 깨닫는 바를 순하게 그러나 엄격한 미적 욕구로 원숙한 경지를 그려내 보이고 있다. 노년기 체력적 부담에도 불구하고 편안함과 긍정과 용서와 배려의 관용적 노년의식이 죽음을 넘어 새로운 생존의 의미로 작품 속에 다양하게 형상화되어 있음을 발견할 수 있다.

영어초록

In this paper, I intend to explore the consciousness of old age appearing in Namjo Kim’s later poems and contemplate its ontological aspect of conversion.
During 1950s, Namjo Kim was in her early days of career. She publicized lyric poetries about love and life with strong foundation of Christian ethics and humanism while Korea was still striving to overcome the chaotic aftermath and wound of the war.
In 1970s, the boundary of love expressed in Kim’s works expanded and deepened. Her poems centered around the theme of love with greater focus on and respect for the absolute value of salvation with religious perspective.
However, starting from her 12th collection of poems, ‘Baptism of the Wind (1988)’, Namjo Kim began to publicize poems on consciousness of old age. As she consistently publicized 13rd collection ‘For Peace’, 14th collection ‘Learning of Hope’, 15th collection ‘Soul and Heart’, and 16th collection ‘Precious Today’, Kim gradually and naturally sutured the changes in her life and perspective to her poetic world.
The consciousness of old age, aesthetic transformation of death appearing in Namjo Kim’s latter poems represent the poet’s acceptance for aging and death as natural phenomena and her will to redeem.
Such phenomenon explains that the poet has deepened and nurtured her consciousness of old age with her religious world view based on firm belief in eternal life.
Kim’s earlier works that intensely investigate proliferation of life and love have undergone the series of changes as Kim’s artistry advanced into latter period. The ultimate theme of her poetries have become the aesthetics in the old age, experience of relative’s death, the will to redeem, positive perspective on life, and world view with firm belief in eternal life.
However, as Namjo Kim herself cannot be entirely free from disease, loneliness, and fragility of life, Kim eagerly hopes for redemption as she experiences her own diseases as well as her family’s death. She understands the aging as a positive process of life with great help of her strong religious belief. In her 16th collection ‘Prescious Today (2007)’, Kim expresses her world of consciousness as an old lady in multifarious ways. Kim depicts with serene voice her own conscious and life that is founded in strong religious belief as composed and dignified, peaceful in mind and passionate for life.
Namjo Kim recovers youthful passion with her infinite gratitude for her long life, to share grace with others and to live the life with composed and peaceful attitude. Her latter works can be found as a new method to find the meaning for life with generous consciousness of old age full of thank and sharing.
