초록

허무는 기존 세계의 무의미화에서 발생한다. 이로 인해 허무의식은 주체와 세계의 관계방식에 있어서의 변화를 예고한다. 허무에 응전하는 과정에서 기존과는 다른 존재방식의 주체가 등장할 것을 추론할 수 있기 때문이다. 결국 허무는 주체의 존재방식 쇄신에 결정적인 작용을 한다. 그러므로 단순히 세계인식의 결과로 허무의식의 의의를 한정짓기보다는, 주체 쇄신의 출발점으로서 허무가 가진 기능적 측면에 초점을 둘 필요가 있다.
이형기의 허무의식은 제1시집부터 제3시집에 이르기까지 꾸준히 변화하는데, 각 시기별로 허무의 내포가 달라짐에 따라 허무에 대한 응전의 결과로 산출된 주체의 면모 또한 차이를 보인다. 제1시집에서 허무는 상실감이나 결핍감과 같은 ‘정서’의 모습으로 등장한다. 이 시기의 시편들에서는 ‘성숙’을 향해 정서와 욕망들을 재배치해 내면을 강화하는 데 성공함으로써 허무를 극복하는 주체의 모습이 부각된다. 제2시집에서 허무는 내면과 분리되는 지점에서 사유된다. 정서 차원에서 출현했던 허무가 세계인식의 차원으로 본격화된다. 제2시집의 주체는 세계의 본질을 허무라는 텅 빈 시공으로 인식하고, 어떤 초월적 가치에도 기대지 않는 단독자로서의 면모를 드러낸다. 제3시집에 이르러 허무는 세계의 무의미성에 대한 강도 높은 인식으로 확장된다. 그리고 이 무의미를 능동적으로 타개해나가는 과정에서 생성을 거듭하는 새로운 주체의 모습이 강조되고 있다. 이제 부정과 파괴를 통한 생산이라는 역설적 과정을 추동하는 기제인 ‘허무화’는 새로운 세계의 창조와 끊임없는 주체의 쇄신을 가능케 하는 핵심적인 동력이 된다.
이처럼 허무의 함의가 달라짐으로써 주체의 모습 또한 변모한다. 이는 주체와 세계의 관계를 세밀하게 파악하는 데서 허무의식에 관한 논의를 다시 시작해야 한다는 점을 시사한다. 세계인식의 과정에서 허무가 어떻게 작용하는지를 밝히고, 그 과정에서 어떤 주체가 구성되는가를 해명함으로써 허무의식의 내포를 확장할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Nihility emerges at the point where the existing world becomes meaningless. Hence, it is possible to say that nihility foreshadows the advent of a different world and prepares for a different desire. Ultimately, the function of nihility is to renovate the mode of existence of the poetic subject. Therefore, rather than limiting the signification of the nihilism by simply regarding it as the outgrowth of the poet's recognition of the world, it is necessary to focus on the functional aspect of nihilism, acting as the starting point of the renovation of the poetic subject.
Lee's first three collections represent three phases of his nihilism, each of which is accompanied by the renovation of the poetic subject's mode of existence. In each collection, transformation of the attitude of the poetic subject, constructed as a result of the poet's reaction to nihility, occurs alongside the shifting of the connotations of nihility. In the first collection, nihilism appears in the form of ‘emotion,’ a feeling of lack or loss. The poetic subject overcomes the nihility by strengthening the inner world through rearranging the emotions and desires towards ‘maturity.’ In the second collection, the nihility separates from the inner world and shifts to the recognition of the outer world in earnest. The poetic subject in the second collection recognizes the essence of the world as an empty time and space of nihility, and reveals himself as Der Einzelne, not leaning on any transcendent value. By the third collection, nihility expands to a stronger recognition of the meaninglessness of the world. A poetic subject with a new aspect is created while actively overcoming this meaninglessness. ‘Nihilization,’ the mechanism of a paradoxical process, i.e. creation through denial and destruction, becomes the core driving force for the creation of a new world and the renovation of the poetic subject.
Thus, the transformation of the poetic subject occurs together with the shifting of the connotation of nihility. This suggests that the discussions about nihilism should start from investigating in detail the relationship of the poetic subject and the outer world. The connotations of nihility can be expanded by deviating from abstract discussions that treat nihility only in terms of the theme of a given poem, and by revealing different significations of nihility emerging from the poet's recognition of the world and elucidating the type of poetic subject that is constructed in the process.
