기형도 시의 시작(詩作)원리로서 기억의 재현양상 연구－이성복 초기 시와의 비교를 통해 (A study on reproduction of memory in Ki Hyeong－do’s poetry －Through comparison with Lee Seong－bok’s early poetry)

초록

본고는 기형도 시에서 기억이 재현되는 양상을 살펴보면서, 시작(詩作)원리의 측면에서 기형도의 개성을 검출하고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 개인에게 독립적인 시간으로 남아있는 기억이 현재 지각에 삽입되는 과정에 대한 검토가 필요했다. 시적 화자의 시간 의식과 그것의 흐름은 그 과정 속에서 형상화된다. 본고는 이성복의 시를 가져와 기형도 시와 비교ㆍ대조하는 것으로 논의를 개진했다. 베르그손의 시간이론은, 그와 같은 비교ㆍ대조를 통한 논의를 구체화하기 위해 호출되었다. 특히 ‘주의적 식별’과 그것의 세 가지 과정에 대한 이론은 요긴한 도구적 틀을 제공했다.
그러한 방식으로 기형도의 개별 시를 검토한 결과, 시작원리상 두 가지 특징을 볼 수 있었다. 먼저 ‘주의적 식별’의 구심적ㆍ원심적 과정을 보여주는 시에서는 기억의 영상적 재현, 곧 장면화(framing)의 방식이 주목되었다. 이성복 시의 경우, ‘시적 진술’과 ‘시적 묘사’의 방식으로 개성적인 이미지를 창출하는 측면이 강했다. 이는 시적 언어 감각을 ‘애매성’의 수사로 풀어내는 현대시의 한 특징을 공지한다. 따라서 기형도가 현재 지각과 유비관계에 있는 개인적 기억을 영상적 장면화로 풀어내고, 그것만으로 시적 현재의 지각 내용을 각인시킨다는 사실은 시작원리상 변별되는 개성이라 할 만 하다.
한편, 기형도와 이성복의 초기 시에는 서로 다른 여러 기억들이 시적 현재와 끊임없이 순환하는 과정이 드러나는 시편이 존재한다. 서사성이 확연하게 드러나는 이들 시에서도 뚜렷한 차이점이 검출되었다. 기형도의 시들은 현재의 지각 내용과 과거의 기억 내용이 영화적 장면 전환을 이루고 있었으며, 전체적으로 보면 영화적 편집에 의해 조직된 영상을 이끌어냈다. 이를 통해, 기형도는 현재 지각의 내용을 창조적으로 발산하는 데까지 나아가고 있었다. 반면 이성복의 초기 시는 ‘주의적 식별’의 구심적ㆍ원심적 과정이 드러나는 시편과 순환적 과정이 엿보이는 시편 모두 언어 감각을 활용한 낯선 이미지화로 집약되었다. 이 역시 독특한 시적 개성이지만, 영화적 영상 감각을 드러내는 기형도 시와는 뚜렷하게 구별된다 하겠다.

영어초록

This study aims to detect the idiosyncrasy of Ki Hyeong－do, in terms of poem composition, by exploring how memory is being reproduced in Ki’s work. To this end, it was necessary to examine the process of how the memory, which remained as an independent time for the individual, is being incorporated into the current perception, in which the speaker’s sense of time, and the flow thereof, become more tangible. This paper presents the discussion by comparing and contrasting Ki’s work with Lee Seong－bok’s poetry. Bergson’s theory of time was also brought in to delineate such discussions. In particular, attentive recognition, and the theory about the three processes thereof, provided an essential instrumental framework to this study.

A review of Ki’s poetry, one by one, showed two characteristics in the principle of poem composition. First, poems that displayed centripetal and centrifugal processes seemed to focus on “framing”, in other words a visual realization or reproduction of memory. Lee Seong－bok’s poetry, on the other hand, seemed to create a particular, idiosyncratic image by means of “poetical testimony” and “poetical description”, which illustrates one of the attributes of modern poetry that unravels the poetical language in the form of “ambiguity”. Therefore, the fact that Ki releases the personal memory－－which is in an analogical relationship with the current perception－－through visual framing, and successfully conveys details about the current perception of the poem, is one attribute that sets Ki’s style of composition apart from others.

Moreover, early works of Ki and Lee express, in its entirety, the relentless rotation of different memories along with the poetical present. These works had such a distinctiveness even with their clear narrativity. Ki’s poems showed that the current perception and the past memory were rotating each other in a cinematic frame, which, as a result, formed an image organized by cinematic editing. Through this, Ki seemed to unleash, in a creative manner, the details of the current perception. On the other hand, early works of Lee－－poems that display centrifugal and centripetal process of attentive recognition, as well as those with rotational processes－－, can be summarized as a strange imaging that utilizes the sense of language. This also is a very idiosyncratic aspect of poem composition, but is in stark contrast with Ki’s poems that encompass a sense of cinematic images.
