박팔양 시와 낭만적 코즈모폴리턴 (Park Pal-Yang’s Poetry and Romantic Cosmopolitanism)

초록

박팔양은 서울에서 만주를 거쳐 북한에 정착하는 인생 역정을 겪으며 식민지조선의 역사를 대변하는 인물이다. 엘리트출신으로서 학창시절부터 여러 문인들과 교분을 쌓았고 신문기자로 근무하며 카프와 구인회에 가입하여 활동한 한편 만주시기에는 조선어 신문 『滿鮮日報』의 학예부장, 편집부장을 맡아 국문학이 위축되던 시기에도 조선어문예를 적극 추진하는 등 문학사적으로도 중요한 위치에 놓이는 시인이다. 해금이후 박팔양 연구가 활발하게 진행되어오고 있으나 만주시기의 이력과 작품내용 때문에 특정 작품이 논의에서 배제되는 경우가 있다. 『滿洲詩人集』에 수록된 「사랑함」과 「季節의 幻想」은 일본제국주의에 협력한 결과 생산된 친일시로 분류되어왔기 때문이다.
박팔양이 일제의 기관지인 『滿鮮日報』에서 부장을 역임하고 이후에 협화회 홍보과에서 근무한 경력을 근거로 하여 정치적 세계관과 예술적 세계관을 일치시키려는 작품분석 태도는 시인의 개인사에만 입각하여 시를 이해하려는 방식으로서 근원적 오류를 낳을 가능성이 있다. 의도적인 오류를 범하지 않기 위해서라도 편협하고 단순한 시각에서 벗어나 앞에 언급한 작품들을 다시 살펴볼 의의가 있다고 본다. 그러려면 박팔양의 전신을 설명할 수 있는 시세계를 관류하는 시각이 필요하다. 무엇보다 눈에 띄는 사실은 박팔양의 시세계 전반을 아우르는 낭만적 시관이다.
창작초기부터 북한의 체제 지향적 문학에 편승한 후기에까지 걸쳐 박팔양의 시에서 꾸준히 드러나는 특징은 낭만성이라고 볼 수 있다. 신경향파문학과 모더니즘문학을 넘나들 때에도 그의 작품에서는 낭만주의적 특성이 발견되고 이것은 코즈모폴리턴 상상력으로 이어지는 양상을 보인다. 식민지지식인이 지닌 주변인적 감수성은 일본에만 국한되지 않는 이국을 향한 관심을 통하여 자신의 신분적 제약을 세계시민이라는 다소 낭만적 감성에 젖은 위상으로 재정립하고자 하였다. 박팔양의 낭만적 코즈모폴리턴 의식은 시대를 대변하는 사상적 지향점이었다.
문제적 작품인 「사랑함」과 「季節의 幻想」은 일제를 의식해서 지은 것이라기보다는 만주라는 국제적 대도시를 목격한 시인이 극대화된 코즈모폴리턴 상상력을 표출한 결과물이라고 볼 수 있다. 제국주의의 건설야욕으로 조성된 도시문명의 화려함을 추수하는 것으로만 「季節의 幻想」을 볼 것이 아니라 내재된 혼종적 감정을 읽어내고, 민족주의적 애국심과 코즈모폴리턴 박애주의가 결합된 의미로 「사랑함」을 해석한다면 이제까지의 일방적 해석을 초극할 가능성이 있다. 또한 박팔양의 『滿洲詩人集』 수록 시가 문학사에서 외면 받고 지탄받아야할 것으로만 이해될 것이 아니라 식민지근대의 시인이 취한 하나의 지향점이 드러나는 작품으로 해명될 때 박팔양의 문학사적 궤적은 분명해질 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Park Pal-Yang is a person who represents the history of Joseon during the Japanese colonial period as he had gone through different lives from Seoul, South Korea through Manchuria to his settlement in North Korea. He, as a person from an elite class, had maintained friendly relationships with many people of literature since his school days, and while working as a newspaper reporter, joined Korea Artista Proleta Federatio (KAPF) and Guinhoe (nine members’ literary society), and in Manchuria, served as feature editor and chief editor for Manseonilbo, a Korean language newspaper, in order to promote literature of Korean language although it was shrinking at the time. In short, he is a poet of importance in the literary history. Despite lively studies on Park Pal-Yang since the lifting of ban, certain works of his have been rarely discussed on account of his career and works in Manchuria. That is because Sarangham (Loving) and Gyejeoleui- hwansang (Fantasy of Season) contained in Manjusiinjip (Anthology of Manchurian Poets) have been categorized as pro-Japanese poems that resulted from cooperating with the Japanese Empire.
There has been an attitude of analysis that equates Park Pal-Yang's aesthetical and political views of the world, based on his serving as department head in Manseonilbo, a news organization of Japanese imperialism, and on his working in the public relations section of Concordia Association. This attitude, however, is likely to commit a fundamental error because it is a way of understanding poems only from a poet's personal life. At least not to make an intentional error, it would be meaningful to the aforementioned works beyond simplified and prejudiced limitations. For that, a different point of view is required that runs through his world of poems and explains changes his position. What is evident most is his romanticistic viewpoint that embraces the whole world of his poetry.
It is Romanticism that continues to appear through his poems from the initial days of writing to the later days he had gone along with the systems-oriented literature of North Korea. Romanticistic features are found in his writings where he frequently crossed the literary frontier between New Tendency and Modernism. And, this Romanticism takes on a new aspect of Cosmopolitan imagination. Such a sensitivity of the marginal person as an intellectual in a colony was to reestablish his restricted status, through his interest in foreign countries as well as Japan, to be a Cosmopolitan, which is a status somewhat soaked in Romanticism. His consciousness of Romantic Cosmopolitanism was the ideological target reflecting the times.
The controversial writings, Loving and Fantasy of Season, can be viewed as a product that a poet who had witnessed an international metropolis (that is, Manchuria) created out of his enlarged consciousness of cosmopolitanism, rather than as a work from his awareness of Japanese imperialism. There is a probability that the existing unilateral interpretation is overcome if Fantasy of Season is read to contain complicated emotions, not only to seek to harvest the glamour of urban civilization built on desire for establishing imperialism and if Loving is interpreted to combine Romanticistic patriotism and Cosmopolitan philanthropy. In addition, the path that he had taken in the literary history will become evident if his poems contained in Manjusiinjip are explained as a work where the target taken by the poet of the colonial era is exposed, not merely as a work to be avoided and denounced in the literary history.
