시인 존재론의 탐구에서 동화시에 이르는 길- 백석의 후기시를 중심으로 (The Road to Children’s Poetry from the Quest of Ontology on the Poet ― Focusing on Baeksok’s later poetry)

초록

백석의 후기시는 독자적인 특성을 보유하는 한 시기로 만주시편, 북방시편 등의 명칭으로 불리면서 논의되어왔다. 백석은 이 시기에 내면 성찰을 통해 존재론적 위기를 시적인 성취로 전환하고 있는데, 본고가 주목하는 것은 내면 성찰의 중심에 ‘시인’으로서의 자의식이 놓여 있다는 사실이다. 일제 말기 모국어를 쓸 수 없고, 제국의 억압이 강화되어 가면서 많은 문인들은 문학하는 행위 자체에 대해 고민할 수밖에 없었다. 그러나 이 시기 백석은 시인이란 쓸쓸하고 슬픈 천명이라는 생각을 일관되게 유지하면서 폭력적인 현실에 대응하는 고고한 시인의 자의식을 강조한다.
이 연구는 시인으로서의 존재론에 대해 고민하고, 이에 대해 탐구하는 백석의 시의식을 낭만주의와 폭넓게 관련시키면서 당대 시론이나 문학사적 상황 속에서 백석의 낭만성을 논의하고 있다. 백석은 후기시의 많은 작품에 ‘시인’의 존재를 등장시켜 시인으로서의 삶에 관한 위기의식에서 비롯한 내면 성찰은 물론 시인 존재에 대한 인정과 확신을 요청한다.
백석이 강조하는 이런 고민은 1930년대 말 정지용이 강조하는 고도의 정신주의와 맞닿아 있다. 정신이란 옳지 않은 현실과 거리를 두는 힘으로 시의 고고성, 자존성, 순수성을 의미하는데, 이는 낭만주의적 시 정신과 근본적으로 상통한다.
백석이 고민했던 시인 존재와 정신에 대한 추구 그리고 예술성의 문제는 해방 이후 북한 문단의 도식주의에 문제를 제기하고 동화시의 창작과 발전에 풍부한 자양분이 될 수 있었다. 이런 의미에서 후기시에 나타난 시와 시인의 본질에 대한 탐구는 백석 개인을 넘어 남한과 북한 문학사 모두에서 의미 있는 성과라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Baeksok’s poems have been discussed as called with such names of Manchuria Psalm and northern specimens, especially for the ones written in the later period of his career, when uniqueness features in most of his literary works. During this period he had changed ontological crisis into poetical achievement through introspection; what this study focuses on is the self-consciousness of the poet lying in the core of his introspection. At the end of Japanese colonial years when Korean was forbidden to use with more strengthened oppression, many writers could not help but agonize over the literary act itself. In this time, however, consistently retaining his thought that being a poet is to face a lonely and sad fate, he emphasized self-consciousness of a noble spiritual poet corresponding to a brutal reality.
This study will examine ontology (substantial existence) in being a poet and understand Baek’s romance in the context of contemporary poetics and literary history while closely relating his exploring poetic world to Romanticism. With presenting the existence of “a poet” in many of his later works, he requests from a sense of consciousness of crisis and introspection to recognition and conviction of being a poet.
Such his stressing concerns encounter intense spiritualism that Jeong Jiyong highlighted in the late 1930s. This spirit is referred to as a power that puts a distance from unrighteous reality. This power can mean nobleness, self-reliance, and innocence of poets. This can be a core of a poetic spirit in Romanticism and be fundamentally well-aligned with the spirit.
The worries about the existence of being a poet and the pursuit of his spirit and artistic matter not only could raise a question on the negligence of the then North Korean literary world after the liberation, but could be also abundant nourishment for creativity and development of children’s poets. In this sense, studying on the essence of the poet Baeksok and his later poetry can be a significant feat for both the South and the North of Arts as well as for Baeksok himself.
