중역과 혁명, 비상시의 세계문학과 그 사명-김남주의 시와 번역을 실마리로- (Translatability of Revolution, Calling of World Literature in the State of Exception-Kim Nam Ju and Double-translation Issues in Modern Korea-)

초록

세계문학은 대개 이질성의 도입(해외문학), 세계성의 성취(세계문학), 언어횡단적 실천(번역문학)이라는 측면에서 각각 문명, 교양, 주체라는 뚜렷한 지향들 속에서 이해되어 왔다. 하지만 혁명적 상황이나 예외상태와 같은 비상시에는 세계문학의 사명이나 역할도 변화할 수밖에 없다. 1970～1980년대의 한국과 같은 비상시의 사회에서 세계문학은 혁명적 상상력의 유력한 경로가 될 수도 있었다.
이 시기의 대표적 시인인 김남주는 해외의 혁명문학에 대한 독서와 번역을 통해 세계문학을 혁명의 번역가능성으로 각인시켜 나갔다. 김남주는 작가로서의 삶 이전에 투사로서 살았으며, 지하 활동의 과정에서 시와 번역의 가능성을 발견했다. 시가 혁명을 위한 이데올로기적 준비가 될 수 있고, 번역이 세계 곳곳의 싸움을 국지화된 운동의 의지로 재점화할 수 있다고 생각하게 된 것이다. 세계문학의 번역가능성은 당대 한국의 혁명 가능성이기도 했다.
한편 운동의 조건과 투옥자로서의 물리적 환경으로 인해 라틴아메리카, 알제리, 베트남을 위시한 각지의 혁명문학에 관한 김남주의 번역은 대개 영어 혹은 일본어를 매개로 한 중역으로 나타났다. 예컨대 파블로 네루다, 오시마 히로미츠(大島博光), 김남주 간의 ‘언어적 이행’이 그런 경우이다. 하지만 김남주의 사례에서 보이듯, 중역이란 혁명의 가능성들 사이에 필연적으로 개재된 제국들의 힘 혹은 흔적이었기에 후기식민지인으로서는 그 자체를 무기화하는 일도 가능했다. 복합적 모순들의 거처에는 복합적 번역 경로-역로(譯路)가 구조화된다. 문제는 김남주가 이를 한계로 보지 않고 수중의 무기로 삼았다는 사실이다.
중역이란 밖으로 나가려는 운동의 잠정적 단계이자 후기식민지의 유산과 탈식민화의 지향 사이의 아이러니한 전진이기도 했다. 비상시의 세계문학은 제국들의 언어와 그 체제를 관통하며 시험된다. 그런 의미에서 중역은 독이자 약-파르마콘이다.

영어초록

World literature has been generally understood in distinct orientations of civilization, culture[Bildungs], and universal subjectivation. Terms such as 'overseas literature' meaning the acceptance of heterogeneity, 'world literature' aiming at the achievement of universality, and 'translational literature' emphasizing translingual practice represent a typical understanding of world literature in modern Korea. However in this paper, I would like to add another concept of world literature like this: “world literature in the state of exception" or "translatability of revolution". In an emergency state like South Korea in the 1970s and 1980s, world literature could be a powerful path for revolutionary imagination.
Kim Nam Ju(1946–1994), a representative poet of this period, re-imprinted world literature as 'translatability of the revolution' through translation of revolutionary world literature. Kim Nam Ju lived as a revolutionary before a poet, and discovered the revolutionary possibility of poetry and translation in the course of his underground activities. He came to think that poetry could be an ideological preparation for the revolution, and that translation could reignite fights around the world with the will of a localized movement. For him, the possibility of translation meant the possibility of revolution in Korea at the time.
However, due to the conditions of the movement and the physical environment as a prisoner, Kim Nam Ju’s translations of revolutionary literature in Latin America, Algeria, and Vietnam were usually double-translations through English or Japanese. For example, the translation of the poem of Pablo Neruda appeared as a "linguistic transition" between Hiromitsu Oshima and Kim Nam Ju. On the other hand, since the double-translation was a trace of the empires inevitably intervened between the possibilities of revolution, it was possible to weaponize itself for the post-colonial subject. Complexity of translational pathways are structured in the topos of complex contradictions. Kim Nam Ju tried to use it as a paradoxical weapon rather than a limitation of the post-colonial rule. World literature in the state of exception is tested by passing through the imperial languages and systems. In that sense, double-translation is both poison and drug-parmacon.
