신동엽 시와 예이츠 시의 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on Shin Dong-yeop’s Poetry and Yeats’s Poetry)

초록

신동엽과 예이츠는 각각 한국의 민주화와 식민지 아일랜드의 역사적 격변기를 경험하면서 시대 현실에 입각한 창작 방법을 적극적으로 모색했던 시인들이다. 시공간의 낙차에도 불구하고 이들의 창작 방법은 공통점이 발견되는데, 이 논문은 신동엽과 예이츠 시의 유사하면서도 변별되는 특징을 비교 분석하고 그것에 내포된 문학사적 의의를 밝히고자 한다.
신동엽과 예이츠는 공통적으로 민족적 정체성을 보여주는 영웅적 인물들을 시의 소재로 채택한다. 하지만 영웅의 재현 양상은 차이점이 발견된다. 신동엽 시에서 영웅적 인물들은 동학농민운동, 3·1 운동, 4·19 혁명 등이 표상하는 한민족의 자주성과 주체성을 보여주는 역사와 결합하여 새로운 역사를 이끌어가는 민중적 영웅으로 구현된다. 이에 반해 예이츠는 아일랜드 고대 전설과 신화 속의 영웅을 차용하여 초월적 존재로서 영웅을 구현한다. 식민지의 현실에서 예이츠 시의 영웅적 인물들은 아일랜드인에게 민족적 자긍심을 재인식하게 하는 계기를 제공한다. 이와 더불어 예이츠는 영원한 진리를 추구하는 존재로 영웅적 인물을 변주함으로써 보다 확장된 의미의 영웅 표상을 마련한다.
신동엽과 예이츠의 시에 재현된 이상향은 ‘과거’의 시공간에 속해 있다. 신동엽 시에서 이상향으로 차용된 ‘과거’는 실재했던 역사적 시공간으로서 ‘삼한’, ‘백제’, ‘북부여’ 등의 상고시대와 관련된다. 신동엽 시에 재현된 상고시대는 한국의 역사와 결합하여 현재화되면서 부정적인 당대 현실을 극복할 수 있는 민족의 미래상을 보여준다. 이에 비해 예이츠 시에서 이상향은 고대 아일랜드의 신화와 전설 속의 시공간이거나, ‘비잔티움’으로 표상되는 시인의 상상 속에 창조된 신화적 시공간으로 재현된다. 신동엽 시에 재현된 이상향이 민중이 주체가 되는 한민족의 특수성을 반영한 역사적 공간으로서 수렴되고 있는 것에 반해, 예이츠 시의 이상향은 다면적으로 변주된다. 민족주의적 경향을 보이는 예이츠의 초기시에서 이상향은 아일랜드의 민족적 정체성이 융성했던 신화적 시공간으로, 후기시에서는 예술혼을 성취할 수 있는 보편적인 이상향으로 변모한다.
신동엽은 민족 정체성을 표상하는 민중적 영웅과 상고시대로 귀결되는 이상향의 재현을 통해 한민족의 정신적 표상을 구체화하고 민중을 기반으로 한 역사 인식을 보여주는 참여시를 창작하였다. 특히 역사적으로 억압받았던 민중들이 새로운 역사의 주체가 되어야 함을 강조한 신동엽의 시는 독자적인 민족문학의 일면을 보여준다. 하지만 한민족의 특수성으로 귀결되는 신동엽의 시적 특징은 김수영의 우려처럼 쇼비니즘으로 전개될 위험성이 내재한다. 이에 반해 예이츠는 아일랜드 고유의 민족성을 담보한 신화와 전설 등을 차용하면서도 이를 새롭게 재창조함으로써 아일랜드의 국지성을 넘어선 민족문학의 구현과 더불어 세계문학의 보편성을 확보하였다. 하지만 예이츠의 민족주의 시는 신동엽의 시와 비교할 때, 당대 현실의 문제를 구체적으로 타파할 수 있는 실질적인 방안을 제시하지 못하는 한계를 지닌다.
민족적 정체성을 보여주는 소재를 활용한 신동엽 시와 예이츠 시는 한국과 아일랜드의 특수한 역사적 현실 안에서 정치 이념으로 경도되었던 당대 한국과 아일랜드 문단의 문제점을 쇄신하여, 문학성과 시대 인식이 동시에 확보된 참여시와 민족주의 시의 전범을 제시했다는 점에서 문학사적 의의가 발견된다.

영어초록

SShin Dong-yeop and Yeats were active poets to explore creative methods based on the reality of the times, going through a turbulent period in history such as democratization in Korea and colonized Ireland, respectively. Despite some gaps in time and space, they share a couple of creative methods. This study set out to compare and analyze similar and yet discriminating characteristics between Shin's and Yeats's poems and shed light on their significance in the literary history.
In their poems, both Shin and Yeats choose heroic figures demonstrating their ethnic identities as their poetic materials. Their heroes, however, show differences in reproduction patterns. In Shin's poems, heroic figures are embodied as the heroes of the people that lead a new history by combining with historical events exhibiting the autonomy and independence of the Korean people represented by the Donghak Peasant Movement, the March 1st Movement, and the April 19th Revolution. Yeats embodies his heroes as transcendent beings by borrowing heroes from the ancient legends and myths of Ireland. In his poems, the heroic figures provide the Irish an opportunity to rediscover their ethnic pride in the reality of a colony. In addition, he offers heroic representations in a broader sense by playing a variation to depict his heroic figures seeking eternal truth.
Utopias reproduced both in Shin's and Yeats's poems belong to the time and space of the "past." The "past" that Shin calls a utopia in his poems has something to do with the ancient era including "Samhan," "Baekje" and "Northern Buyeo" as historical time and space that existed in reality. The ancient era reproduced in his poems is combined with the history of Korea and presented as a present time, showing a future image of the Korean people to overcome the negative reality of the times. In Yeats's poems, a utopia is the time and space of ancient Ireland's myths and legends or is reproduced as a mythical time and space represented by "Byzantium" created in his imagination. While the utopias reproduced in Shin's poems boil down to a historical space reflecting the distinct characteristics of the Korean people as the subject of the public, those in Yeats's poems show multifaceted variations. In his early poems with nationalistic tendency, a utopia is depicted based on the mythical time and space of Ireland's prosperous ethnic identity. His later poems present a universal utopia to achieve an artistic spirit.
Shin created engagement poems that depicted the spiritual representation of the Korean people specifically and showed the historical awareness based on the people by reproducing people's heroes representing their ethnic identity and utopias that boiled down to the ancient era. His poems emphasized that the people, who were suppressed in history, should be the new subject of history, displaying an aspect of independent national literature. His poetic characteristics toward the distinct characteristics of the Korean people, however, have the risk of chauvinism inherent in them as Kim Soo-young was concerned. Yeats borrowed myths and legends based on the unique ethnicity of Ireland and recreated them anew, securing the universal nature of world literature while embodying national literature beyond the local features of Ireland. Compared with Shin's poems, however, his nationalistic poems have a limitation of providing no practical measures to target the issues of his reality specifically.
Shin's and Yeats's poems based on materials showing an ethnic identity reformed the issues of Korea's and Ireland's literary circles, respectively, inclined towards political ideas in the unique historical reality of Korea and Ireland and proposed the classic examples of engagement poetry and nationalistic poetry that secured both literary values and the awareness of the times, thus holding their significance in the history of literature.
