『주역』 ‘시의(時義)’괘 함의 연구 — 「단전(彖傳)」을 중심으로 — (A Study on the Implication of “The Time and the Significance(時義)” from Guas in Tuanzhuan(彖傳) of Zhouyi(周易))

초록

『주역』 「단전」의 ‘때[時]’의 중대성을 찬탄하는 12괘 중에서, 본고는 ‘때[時]와 의의[義]’의 중대성을 ‘시의대의재(時義大矣哉)’라고 하여 찬탄한 5괘를 중심으로 그 함의를 고찰한다. 5괘는 예괘(豫卦)⋅돈괘(遯卦)⋅구괘(姤卦)⋅여괘(旅卦)와 수괘(隨卦)이다. 본고에서는 ‘때[時]와 의의[義]’의 중대성을 첫째, 창조의 원천이라는 측면에서, 둘째, 존재의 기저로서의 시간의 공평성이라는 측면에서 분석한다. 이에 대한 다양한 주석의 흐름을 중심으로 엘리자베스 F. 코헨의 정치철학적 관점을 통하여 살펴보고자 한다.
5괘의 특징과 함의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 예괘와 구괘는 ‘순응하여 움직임[順動]’과 ‘서로 만남[相遇]’의 도리를, 수괘는 ‘때를 따름[隨時]’의 도리를 드러내고 있다. 이러한 이치가 실현되는 시간을 창조의 원천이라는 측면에서 고찰한다. 예괘는 천지의 도와 성인의 업이 모두 순응하여 움직이는 도에 따르기 때문에 형벌이 공평하여 백성이 복종하므로, 예괘의 때와 의의가 매우 큼을 강조하였다. 특히 예괘는 ‘때’보다도 ‘의의’에 더욱 중점을 두어, 작거나 천해 보이는 일조차도 이치에 따라 순응한다면 만사의 움직임이 어긋나지 않아 군자의 사업을 통한 공능을 이룰 수 있을 것이라는 깊은 뜻을 함의하고 있다. 구괘는 만나야만 비로소 천지 만물이 화생하고 품물을 빛나게 할 수 있으므로, ‘바름[正]’으로 서로 만나면 만남의 도는 아름다울 수 있다는 것이다. 즉 구괘는 ‘만남’의 의미를 넓게 밝혀서 드러난 것만으로는 다 밝힐 수 없는 때와 의의가 매우 중대함을 찬탄하였다. 수괘는 ‘때를 따름[隨時]’의 중요성을 강조하여, 움직이는 것과 기뻐함도 따르는 의미가 있음을 밝힌다. 때를 따르는 것에는 고정된 표준이 없고, ‘기미’를 파악하여 주도면밀하게 헤아릴 수 있어야만 일정한 경지에 이를 수 있으므로, 때를 따르는 의의가 크다고 찬탄하였다. 이 3괘를 통해서 때에 적합하고 바르게 순응하여 움직이고, 만나고, 따르는 것이 사업의 공능을 이루는 만물 창조의 원천임을 알 수 있다.
둘째, 돈괘와 여괘는 ‘물러나 형통함[遯亨]’과 ‘조금 형통함[小亨]’의 이치를 드러낸다. 돈괘는 앞으로 반드시 막히는 상황에 이를 것을 알아, 오히려 나아가지 않고 물러나, 매여서 바름을 지키면 조금 이로울 수 있다는 것이다. 두 괘를 통하여 시간의 공평성이 존재의 기저로서 가지는 의미를 알 수 있다. 어려움에 처하였을 때조차도 시간은 늘 공평하므로, ‘작은 행동이나 일들’을 가볍게 여기고 바름을 지켜야 한다. ‘바름을 지키는 것이 조금 이롭다.’라는 것은 앞으로 이르게 될 상황을 준비하는 의의를 강조한다. 여괘에서 때와 의의가 중대하다고 찬탄한 것은, 나그네의 때는 비록 곤궁하더라도 그 어느 때나 시간은 공평하므로, 굳세고 바르게 중정함을 지킨다면 조금이라도 형통함을 이룰 수 있음을 강조한 것이다. 오히려 어려운 때이므로 사소해 보일지라도 그 의의는 중대하다고 찬탄하여 강조한 것이다. 이 2괘 모두 비록 물러나야만 할 때에도, 곤궁한 때에도, 기미를 파악하여 처신한다면 형통함을 이룰 수 있음을 밝히고 있다. 결론적으로 시의(時義)괘의 ‘때와 의의’의 함의를 통하여 ‘의의’가 더욱 강조되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그것은 만물의 창조적 사업(事業)의 공능(功能)과 존재의 기저로서의 형통함이다.

영어초록

The Tuanzhuan(彖傳) of Zhouyi(周易) praises the importance of “the time,” focusing on the 12 guas. This paper focuses and contemplates on the five guas that praise the importance of “the time and the significance” using the phrase of “the time and the significance is great(時義大矣哉).” The five guas include Ye-gua (豫卦), Su-gua (隨卦), Don-gua (遯卦), Gu-gua (姤卦) and Ryeo-gua (旅卦), meaning “acting according the time[順動],” “meeting with each other[相遇],“ “behaving according to the time[隨時],“ “taking a step back to go well [遯亨],” and “going well to some extent[小亨]” respectively. This paper analyzes the importance of "the time and the significance” in two aspects: from a perspective of the origin of creation and from another perspective of the fairness of time as the basis of existence. This paper compares and examines different views of philosophers on those various perspectives, also including the political philosophy of Elizabeth F. Cohen.
The natures and implications of five guas are as follows. First, the Ye-gua (豫卦) and the Gu-gua (姤卦) reveal the Tao[道] of “moving in compliance with the time[順動]” and “meeting with each other[相遇]" respectively, and the Su-gua (隨卦) reveals the Tao[道] of “following the time[隨時].” This thesis contemplates on the time, at which such Tao[道] is realized, as the orgin of creation. The Ye-gua (豫卦) highlights the importance of the time and the significance as the people obey to the law when both the law of the operation of heaven and earth and the duty of saints move in compliance with Tao[道] and thereby the punishment becomes exactly adequate and right. In particular, the Ye-gua (豫卦) places a bigger emphasis on “the significance” than on “the time” since the movement of all things will not be misaligned and will be well operated based on the governance by wise men, when even the smallest and the most trivial things conform to the reason. The Gu-gua (姤卦) explains that when things meet each other with ‘Righteousness[正],’ the Tao[道] of the meeting can be beautiful as every being can exist and reproduce only when things meet each other. As such, the Gu-gua (姤卦) expands the meaning of “meeting” to praise the importance of the time and the significance that could not be sufficiently highlighted only with the already revealed things. The Su-gua (隨卦) highlights the importance of “following the time[隨時]” and explains that moving follows a meaning, and so does joy. Following the time was praised for its huge implications as there is no fixed standards for following the time, and to identify and to thoroughly understand “the indication” are imperative to reaching a certain level of maturity. All of these three guas show that to conform to, move and meet according to, and comply with the time and the right way is the origin of creation which makes things to be well-operated.
Second, the fairness of time is the underlying basis of every existence, and the Don-gua (遯卦) and the Ryeo-gua (旅卦) reveal the Tao[道] of “taking a step back to go well [遯亨]” and “going well to some extent[小亨]” respectively. The Don-gua (遯卦) means things can be beneficial to some extent if people decide not to go forward and to take a step back instead, remaining still to follow the right thing, as they know that they will definitely be blocked in the future. The time is always fair even in difficult times, so when faced with trouble, it is important to know that “taking the right path is beneficial to some extent” and prepare for a future situation where “taking the right path is truly beneficial,” instead of overlooking “small behaviors and things” and not taking a right way. The Yeo-gua (旅卦) praised the importance of the time and the significance, because even when a traveler is in a time of difficulties, if one firmly sticks to the righteousness and remains fair and just, the traveler can “go well to some extent” as the time is always fair. Instead, it was praised and highlighted that because it is a difficult time, things that appear trivial have great significance. Both of the two guas show that things can go well even in a time when to step back or in difficult times if one identifies indications and behaves accordingly. On the other hand, Wang Bi annotates “the time and the significance” of the Yeo-gua (旅卦) that wise men coming forward for things to rely on in a time when all things fall apart and lose where they used to belong to. In other words, he deemed ‘going well to some extent and auspiciousness as a result of a traveler acting righteously’ as coming forward.
In conclusion, what distinguishes the implication of the guas that praise the importance of “the time and the use” and the implication of “the time and the significance”, the implication of “the time and the significance” is highlighted more in confucian annotation. The thesis believes that the well-operated governance serves for the origin of creation and the things going well is to be the basis of existence.
