노자 사상을 통해 본 올라퍼 엘리아슨 체험 전시 공간 특성 연구 (A study on the characteristics of Olafur Eliasson's experience exhibition space through Lao-tzu's thought)

초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 본 논문은 올라퍼 엘리아슨(Olafur Eliasson)의 전시 공간을 노자 사상의 도(道) 개념을 통하여 공간적 감성 특성을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 올라퍼 엘리아슨의 작품은 자연, 철학, 과학, 건축 등 다양한 분야를 다루며 비물질적 요소를 이용해 자연과 인공 사이, 현실과 가상의 그 경계를 허물고 익숙함 속 새로움, 친숙함 속 낯섦과 같은 이분법적인 인식이 아닌 상호 관계성을 만들어 낸다. 그 결과 그의 전시는 자연과 조화를 이루는 환경을 만들며 자연적 질서를 통한 상호 관계를 연결하고 균형과 다양한 경험을 통한 창조적 가치로 새로운 공간을 만들어 낸다. 이는 노자 사상의 도(道)와 유사점이 나타난다. 도(道)는 자연의 원리를 본받아 천지 만물의 존재와 운동하는 형식을 보여주고자 하며 보고 듣는 방식이 아닌 나의 내면세계 지각적 관점으로 소리를 듣고, 그 형체를 본다. 즉, 도(道)는 무(無)의 실체의 결핍이 아닌 다양한 유(有)의 가능성과 창조성을 형성시키고 상호 관계를 통한 변형 가능성으로, 고정되고 객관적인 실체보다는 인간 지각의 경험적이고 직관적인 측면이 우선시 된다. 이러한 유사점을 발견하고 노자 사상의 도(道)를 디자인 방법론으로써 엘리아슨의 전시 공간 특성과 연결한다. 본 논문은 서로 다른 문화적, 역사적 맥락에서 공간 인식의 유사점을 찾고 공간디자인의 방향성에 대한 새로운 기대효과를 제시한다. (연구방법) 연구 방법으로 노자의 도(道)에 대한 이론적 개념을 『도덕경』 1~14장을 분석하여 조형적 언어를 도출하고 2000년 이후 올라퍼 엘리아슨(Olafur Eliasson)의 전시 공간의 다섯 가지 사례에서 공간적 특성을 도출한다. 이를 노자의 도(道)의 조형 언어와 연결하여 구체적인 전시 공간 표현 특성을 도출하며, 노자 사상과 엘리아슨의 전시 공간 유사점을 찾고 공간디자인의 방향성에 대한 새로운 기대효과를 제시하였다. (결과) 그 결과 도(道)의 이론적 개념에서 ‘다양성’, ‘창의성’, ‘비일상성’의 세 가지 특성과 엘리아슨의 전시 공간의 특성인 “확장, 무한, 관계, 몰입, 환상, 유기, 사색, 긴장, 불규칙성”으로 파악된다. 이를 도(道)의 개념과 엘리아슨 작품을 연결하여 네 가지 공간적 특성을 도출하였다. “빈 공간에 나타나는 확장적 경험”, “비물질성을 통한 무한 창조”, “ 몰입을 통한 비일상 경험 ”, “유사자연과 인간의 상호 관계”로 그의 작업은 공간과 관객 사이의 의존적 관계를 만들어 인간의 직관적인 지각 측면을 통해 느껴지는 역동적인 공간 환경을 만들어 낸다. 본 연구는 이러한 접근이 공간 디자인 분야에서 창의적인 방법론으로써 점차 발전되기를 기대한다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) The purpose of this thesis was to examine the spatial sensibility characteristics found in Olafur Eliasson's exhibition space and to compare them with the concept of Tao in Lao Tzu's philosophy. Eliasson's works incorporate elements from nature, philosophy, science, and architecture, and utilize material components to dissolve the boundaries between the natural and the artificial, i.e., the real and the virtual. By creating dichotomous works that combine the familiar with the unfamiliar, Eliasson creates interrelationships rather than mere cognitive experiences. Consequently, his exhibitions harmoniously coexist with nature, establish mutual connections through the natural order, and generate new spatial experiences with creative values by balancing diverse elements. This resembles Lao Tzu's Tao, which imitates the principles of nature and seeks to reveal the existence and motion of all things in the universe. In Tao, perceptions of sound and shape come from an inner world that is individualized and not objective. Therefore, Tao is not a lack of substance but rather the possibility of diverse existences and creativity, and a means of transformation through mutual relationships. This is an empirical and intuitive aspect of human perception that prioritizes fixed and objective substances. After identifying these similarities, the characteristics of Eliasson's exhibition space were analyzed using a design methodology based on Lao Tzu's Tao. This study discovered commonalities in spatial perception across different cultural and historical contexts and introduced new prospects for spatial design approaches. (Method) As a research methodology, the theoretical concept of Tao from Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching was examined in Chapters 1 through 14 to obtain a language for shaping and deriving spatial characteristics. By linking this language with the formative language of Lao Tzu's Tao, the specific characteristics of exhibition space expressions were obtained. Similarities between Lao Tzu's philosophy and Eliasson's exhibition space were identified, and new prospects for spatial design approaches were presented. (Results) The three characteristics of the Tao concept were “diversity,” “creativity,” and “non-dailyness,” and the characteristics of Eliasson's exhibition space were “expansion,” “infinity,” “relationship,” “immersion,” “fantasy,” “abandonment,” “contemplation,” “tension,” and “irregularity.” (Conclusions) Four spatial characteristics were derived by connecting the concepts of Tao with Eliasson’s work. His work creates a dependent relationship between the space and the audience, with an “expansion experience appearing in empty space,” “infinite creation through immateriality,” a “non-everyday experience through immersion,” and a “reciprocal relationship between similar nature and human beings.” This creates a dynamic spatial environment that is felt through intuitive human perception. It is expected that this approach will gradually develop into a creative methodology in the field of spatial design.
