초록

이 논문은 주디스 버틀러가 전기의 젠더 계보학에서 후기의 정치 윤리학으로관점을 전환하면서, 인종과 젠더의 주제와 타자와 주체의 불확실성이라는 주제를어떻게 연결하고 또 심화시키고 있는지 그 연관관계를 고찰하기 위한 것이다. 이는 또한 후기의 정치윤리학의 중심이 되는 임마누엘 레비나스의 타자의 윤리학을살펴보고 이것이 전기의 젠더 계보학과 연결되는 접접을 모색하려는 것이기도 하다. 전기의 버틀러가 인종이나 섹슈얼리티라는 주제의 계보학적 성찰에 초점을 두고 있다면, 후기의 버틀러는 인간됨, 인간의 살 가능성, 삶을 삶으로 살게 하는 것,애도 능력 등을 중심 주제로 다루기 때문이다.
이를 위해 우선 넬라 라슨의 『패싱』에 나타난 버틀러의 인종과 젠더 문제를 ‘퀴어’와 ‘패싱’의 관점에서 논의했다. 패싱이라는 인종적 외양과 본질의 경계 넘기는퀴어라는 동성애와 이성애의 경계 넘기와 맞닿아 있다고 여겨지기 때문이다.
두 번째는 레비나스의 윤리학이 후기 버틀러의 타자, 주권, 민족에 미친 영향을분석해보고자 했다. 타자에게 기대어 타자의 관계를 통해 감정적 반응을 일으키는주체의 근본적 취약성과 본질적 의존성을 중심으로 논의코자 했으며, 주체가 근본적으로 타자에 기대어 있다면 주체의 삶이 얼마나 취약하고 불확실한 것인지, 그리고 그것이 가지는 윤리적 가능성은 무엇인지를 고찰하고자 했다.
전기 버틀러의 인종과 젠더의 논의는 후기에 이르러 더 폭넓은 현실정치의 윤리적 소명을 요청하고 있다. 이런 논의는 이론적이고 추상적이던 전기의 논의가구체적이고 현실적인 세계에 대한 인식으로 일상화되고 확대되면서 주체안의 타자를 껴안는 폭넓은 윤리의 문제로 나갈 수 있다고 평가된다.

영어초록

This essay aims to examine the binding point of the early gender genealogy and the later political ethics in Judith Butler's queer theory.
Also it tries to research Butler's creative reading of Emmanuel Levinas based on the ethics of Other in the form of the 'Face', the central philosophical theme in The Precarious Life. Earlier Butler focused on race and gender in each individual, analyzing the relation between passing and queering represented in the characters of Nella Larsen's Passing, but later she tends to emphasize a dyadic relation, the significant connection between the subject and the other, the subject's fundamental vulnerability and the substantial dependence on others.
To demonstrate the connection and deviation between the earlier gender genealogy and later political ethics, I suggest that we should pay attention to the change of the subject aspect from individual 'I' to dyadic "we", from passing and queering to the face of the Other and the ambivalent paradox of sovereignty and state.
First, the interrelation between racial 'passing' and sexual 'queering'is examined in terms of linguisitic ambivalence and significative ambiguity in Passing. Second, to develop Butler's extended interests in the real life, the influence of Levinas' ethics on social identities 'we'instead of 'I' is researched as a possibility of improvisation practice transforming and displacing norms within constraints in terms of Other, the sovereignty, and the state. 'The ethics of Other' can result from the grievability, which is the ability of impressionability, the affect related to the subject's vulnerability, and also close relationality between the subject and the others after 9/11; sovereignty is a complex effect on the human right and a historically contextual product by a particular power regime, not the universal condition of paradoxical laws; the double significance of nation is divided into the internal private psychic state and the external public national apparatus.
The demand of ethical vocation and responsibility in her later political ethics can expand the theoretical textual criticism to practical real politics. And 'we' instead of 'I' as indeterminate identities can result in the open future embracing others in one's identity and violationality in the given norms by impressionality. Not being me is the condition of my identity and that's the importance of interdependency in 'the ethics of Other' in Butler's later political theory.
