초록

Last year, the Korean peninsular was on the brink of war after the Cheonanham submersion and the Yeonpyeongdo bombardment. While,our society was astounded at the news about ‘Nayoung(pseudonym)’, a eight year old girl, the survivor of the brutal sexual violence. It is clear that we live in the world filled with violence and/therefore this very time should be the kairotic moment for peace. However, thinking about peace, that the true and real peace, it seems, can not be achieved through the diplomatic and political means. The more important thing to make peace in our daily lives is the spiritual metanoia.
This study aims to grope how to build the peace community based on the Jesus’ teaching. As a matter of fact, there are many other articles dealing with the peace issue, because it is one of the classical items in the field of Christian ethics. But those studies tend to focus on the war such as ‘the just war theory’ or ‘the holy war theory’, so they come to have the weakness to give an answer to the everyday violence. It is my belief that discussing about violence and peace only from the perspective of the extraordinary situation like war can be a danger to trivialize the ordinary violence, although every violence is interconnected each other.
In this context, this article starts with the detailed research of the diverse expressions of violence. Here, we can meet many scholars such as Johan Galtung Jacques Ellul, Robert McAfee Brown, Dom Helder Camara,so on. And then, the study moves to explore the biblical meaning of violence(‘hamas’), and peace(‘shalom’ or ‘eirene’) putting emphasis on the Jesus’ teaching. In the last section, the author examines the ‘Decade to Overcome Violence: 2001-2010’ programme which was brought by World Council of Churches and suggests some practical wisdom and strategy to build up a culture of peace.
