환상 기제를 통한 카오 페이(Cao Fei)의 <코스플레이어스(Cosplayers)> 작품 연구 (A Study on “Cosplayers” by Cao Fei on the Mechanism of Fantasy)

초록

본 연구는 중국의 문호개방, 자본의 근대화 물결과 함께 자라온 ‘빠링허우(八零後)’ 세대의 하이브리드적 특성을 보여주는 카오 페이(Cao Fei, 曹斐, 1978-)의 <코스플레이어스(Cosplayers)> 작품 연구이다. 작가와 그 세대는 1980년대 이후 급속한 경제발전으로 이룩된 도시에서 외부세계와의 활발한 접촉으로 인한 문화적 혼종성(hybridity)을 체화한 일종의 혼성체들로 성장한다.
그러나 동시에 그들에게 서로 다른 문화적 요소들이 충돌하고 변이를 일으키는 혼성지대는 신구(新舊)의 공간과 시간이 모순적으로 탈구되는 균열의 지점이기도 하다. 그 세대의 문화적 아이콘으로 대변되는 카오 페이는 자신과 그 세대의 혼성적 정체성에 대한 내러티브를 응시하기위하여, 놀이의 ‘환상’과 삶에 대한 ‘실재’를 초현실적 플롯 위에 병치시켜 <코스플레이어스>를제작한다. 이 작품에서 중국의 청(소)년들은 변신을 거듭하는 ‘코스플레이(Cosplay : Costume＋ Play 합성어의 줄임말)’의 환상의 힘을 부여받고 실제의 풍요 속 광저우 도시공간과 빈곤 속 노동계급 가정공간을 오가며 삶에 대한 희극과 비극의 내러티브를 연기한다. 이러한 희극과 비극의 환상적 무대는 신구의 공간과 시간에 대한 환상과 실재를 봉합한 틈새이며, 이 사이에서 가상의 인물로 분한 코스플레이어들은 중국 사회의 실재 삶에 대한 또 다른 그림자로 등장하면서, 그 세계에 둘러싸인 자신들의 존재론적 위치를 상연한다. 그러나 동시에 작가는 존재론적 전이를 전제로 하는 현대판 미미크리(mimicry) 놀이로서 코스플레이에 내재한 변신 욕망을 통해서일상생활에서 쉽게 제 모습을 드러내지 않는 코스플레이어스의 욕망을 발현시키고 있다. 이러한변신의 환상을 통하여 작가는 현실의 욕구와 자아의 욕망의 균열 지점에 서 있는 코스플레이어들에게 스스로의 욕망, 즉 실재와 대면할 수 있는 환상의 지대를 마련하고 있다. 이러한 논지에서 환상 기제로 카오 페이의 <코스플레이어스>를 접근한 본 연구는 그 작품을 작가와 그 세대가 세계의 자명성을 끊임없이 의심하며 유동적 정체성을 스스로 그려 자신들의 진정한 자리를마련하려는 주체화의 실천들을 상연하는 환상의 리얼리티 드라마로 조명한다.

영어초록

This study is about Cao Fei’s <Cosplayers>, which presents hybrid characteristics of the China’s Post-80s (bālínghòu in Chinese), a generation grown up experiencing open door and wave of modernization in China. In the city established by the rapid economic development since the 1980s, Cao Fei and the generation grew into a type of hybrid that embodies the cultural hybridity caused by active contacts with the outside world. However, the hybrid zone where cultural factors that are different each other collide and mutate is also a cracking point where time and space of old and new dislocate contradictorily. Cao Fei who is represented as a cultural icon of his generation juxtaposed the 'fantasy' of play and 'reality' of life on the surreal plot and produced <Cosplayers> in order to gaze at the narrative about hybrid identity of herself and her generation. In <Cosplayers>, young people (teenagers) in China are given the power of fantasy of Cosplay (short for compound word ‘Costume Play)’ that repeats metamorphosis and traverse between the real space of urban Guangzhou in abundance and the space of working class families in poverty and perform the narrative of comedy and tragedy about life. Such fantastic stage of comedy and tragedy is a suture line between fantasy and reality about space and time of old and new on which Cosplayers impersonated fictional characters appear as another shadow about real life of Chinese society to play their ontological position surrounded by the world.
However, at the same time, Cao Fei reveals the desire of ‘Cosplayers’ who don’t express themselves easily in their daily lives through desire of metamorphosis embedded in the <Cosplayers>, a modern version of mimicry, which is based on the premise of the ontological transformation. Through such fantasy of metamorphosis, the artist prepares fantasy world where ‘Cosplayers’ who stand at the crack between desire of reality and desire of ego can face desire of themselves, which is reality. From such point of argument, this paper studies Cao Fei’s <Cosplayers> on the mechanism of fantasy and illuminates it as a reality drama of fantasy that shows the practice of subjectification of Cao Fei and the generation to prepare their real position by continuously questioning about self-evidence of the world and drawing fluid identity.
