In Coriolanus, Martius’s most noticeable characteristics are his predominant consciousness and alienation of self. These are characterized by a strong consciousness of personal standards and goals and by a rigid distinction between one’s own merits and that of other’s, even though he may well lack self knowledge and possesses excessive egotism. Also, the events that reveal this absolute egoism also portray a Martius, who grows progressively more estranged from any nourishing social context or sense of personal identity. Martius is isolated from his family and society. This occurs when the tribunes banish Martius from Rome and make him literally an alien. Compelled to break off from Rome, Martius goes alone like a lonely dragon into exile.
Martius is not always static and constant and unchanging. We see, at least, significant human changes in Martius. The first change is a superficial change of loyalty from Rome to the Volscians, though it alienates Martius further from his home and his Roman identity. The second, however, is more deeply personal and significant. Martius abandons the revenge that his self-will demands for the importance of at least being human. In conclusion, Martius Coriolanus’s surrender pushes him even farther way from the home he spares, as he remains true to his nature and virtue, even after choosing mercy.
