문순태 소설의 사운드스케이프 연구 (A Study on Soundscape in the Novels of Moon Sun Tae)

초록

본 연구는 최근 소리 환경에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있는 실정에서 음악이나 건축, 환경 분야 중심으로 연구되고 있는 사운드스케이프를 문학 작품 연구로 그 지평을 확장시키고자 하는 문제의식에서 출발했다. 현대 작가 중 문순태는 초기, 중기, 후기에 걸쳐 지속적으로 사운드스케이프를 서사적 행위의 내적 의미를 함축한 가시적 표상으로 제시하고 있다. 이에 본고는 문순태 전체 소설작품에 산재해 있는 사운드스케이프를 범주화하여 초기와 중기, 후기로 나누고 그 의미를 분석한 뒤, 각 시기에 따라 작가가 지향해 왔던 작가의식을 도출하는데 목적을 두었다.
먼저 사운드스케이프가 단지 청각적인 소리 자체가 아니라 우리들에 의해 의미 지어지고 구성되는 소리 환경을 중요하게 생각하는 하나의 사상이자 이념이므로 문학 작품 연구의 틀이 될 수 있음을 밝힌 후, 문순태의 전체 작품에 산재해 있는 사운드스케이프를 범주로 묶어 초기, 중기, 후기로 나누어 그 의미를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 초기 소설은 국가주도하에 이루어진 근대화의 폭력성과 언론 탄압의 실상을 ‘불도저 소리’로, 이촌 농민들의 뿌리 뽑힌 삶과 한을 ‘징소리’로 대변하고 있었다. 중기 소설은 ‘총소리’를 통해 한국현대사에 반공 이념이 여전히 ‘비극적 광맥’으로 내재되어 우리의 삶을 끊임없이 분열시키고 있음을 보여준 뒤, ‘물레방아소리, 단소 소리, 무당의 굿소리’ 라는 친밀하고 정감이 가는 소리를 이용하여 우리 사회의 대립과 갈등을 해소하고, 분단 이전의 민족적 동질성을 회복하여 역사의 꽉 막힌 문맥을 열고자 했다. 후기 소설은 ‘개구리 소리, 대 바람 소리, 숲 속의 오케스트라 소리, 뜸부기 소리’ 등 소리 풍경이 아직도 오염되지 않은 채 남아있는 생오지를 형상화하여 아름다운 농촌공동체의 복원 가능성을 제시했다.
다음으로 문순태가 초기, 중기, 후기에 걸쳐 일관되게 서사적 장치로써 사운드스케이프를 활용했던 이유는 달라진 지각환경에 기민하게 반응하여 자신을 둘러싸고 있는 현실을 정확히 꿰뚫기 위한 작가의식의 발로였음을 밝혔다. 왜냐하면 사운드스케이프의 존재양상은 단순히 ‘소리’ 그 자체만으로 성립하는 것이 아니라 세계 전체와 얽혀 삶을 일깨우는 작용을 하고 있기 때문이다. 초기 소설은 기자 생활을 하면서 취재한 소재로 사회 현실의 구조적 모순을 밝혔으며, 중기 소설은 5·18광주민주화운동으로 기자직에서 해직된 뒤 역사적 사실과 관련된 이데올로기 문제를 서사화했고, 후기 소설은 교단을 떠난 뒤 55년 만에 돌아온 고향에서 다문화 사회의 경계 허물기를 실천하여 농촌공동체의 새로운 소통방법을 제시했다.
본고는 그 동안 음악이나 건축, 환경 분야 중심으로 연구되고 있는 사운드스케이프 개념을 한 작가의 전체 작품을 망라하여 분석했다. 본고의 이러한 시도는 앞으로 다른 작가의 작품 연구나 지역 사회의 소리 연구에까지 그 지평을 확장할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

Recently, the interest in sound environment has increased, and Soundscape has been studied with music and architectural sectors at its center. Under this circumstance, this study began with a sense of problem to expand the horizon of Soundscape to the study of literary works. Among contemporary writers, Moon Soon Tae has continued to suggest Soundscape as a visual presentation implicating internal meaning of narrative behavior in his early, middle and later works. Accordingly, this study classified Soundscape scattered in his whole works in the early, middle and later period and analyzed its meanings, followed by the extraction of the writer consciousness at each respective stage.
First, the study discerned that Soundscape is not a simple sound itself, but a thought and idea that considers sound environment signified and composed by us important, which can be a frame of a study on literary work. Next, the study examined the meaning of Soundscape in the works of Moon Sun Tae at its early, middle and later period. His early novels represent the abandoned life and agony of farmers who migrated to cities with ‘the sound of bulldozers’ and ‘Jing sound’. His novels in the middle period show that ideology is still immanent as ‘vein’ in contemporary Korean history dividing our life ceaselessly from ‘gun sounds’ and attempted to open the context of our society confined with the homogeneity before the national division by means of ‘waterwheel sound, Danso sound, and Gut sound’. In his later period novels, he proposes a possibility of restoration of beautiful rural community through the uncontaminated wile remote areas where there are sound atmospheres such as ‘frog sound, bamboo wind sound, orchestra sound in forest and crake sound.’ Next, this study discovered that Moon Sun Tae continued to use Soundscape as a narrative device in his early, middle and later period was because of the initiation of his awareness of writer to make prompt responses to a changed cognitive environment and to penetrate surrounding reality accurately. This is because the existence of different Soundscape is not composed of ‘sound’ itself, but works to awaken by interlocking with the whole world. His initial novels revealed the social structural contradiction based on his resources collected from his journalist life. In his middle period novels, he narrated ideology issues with the historicity after being dismissed from the journalist position due to the 5·18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. His later novels suggests a new communication method of rural community by breaking boundaries of the multi-cultural society in his home town where he settled after retirement and returned after 55 years.
While the concept of Soundscape has been studied in music and architecture, this study analyzed it with the whole works of one writer. Thus, it is expected that this study would expand the horizons to the study of sound landscape of other writers’ works or a specific local society.
