초록

본 논문은 죽농 안순환이 유림들을 규합하여 일제하의 침체된 유교정신을 회복하고자 실행한 유교종교화운동을 연구한 것이다. 주요 내용 은 죽농 안순환이 1930년 안향의 21세손이라는 자부심으로 자신의 전 재산을 희사하면서 조선유교회를 설립하여 전국 전통유림과 신진유림들에게 큰 호응을 받아 활동하였던 유교부흥운동에 관한 것이다. 서울 시흥에 녹동서원을 설립하고 자신의 선조인 안향을 배향하고 이를 중심으로 조선유교회 본부를 만들었다. 대표적인 활동으로는 전국 각 지역에 유교회 지부를 운영할 유교전교사를 녹동서원을 통하여 배출하고자 학자들을 초청하여 약 10여 동안 조선유교회 본부를 활성화하였다.
먼저 본 논문을 통하여 1932년 창립한 조선유교회 설립의 배경이 된 연산도통사의 공교운동에 대하여 살펴보았다.
순흥 안씨들이 중심이 되어 활동한 연산도통사는 1917년 국내 최초 공교지회로 여말 선초에 이어 근대에 이르기 까지 유교정신을 이어온 큰 맥락 이다. 여말 선초 선조 회헌 안향이 성리학 도입으로 국가 안정에 기여한 바를 본으로 삼아 1909년 일제기는 순흥안씨 주축으로 『회헌선생실기』를 간행하여 시대극복을 위한 민족의식 고취(1909)에 힘을 모은 곳이다. 그 정신은 회헌 21세손인 안순환의 선조 흠양 및 선양사업을 위한 일제기 <조선유교회> 창립(1932)으로 이어져 온 것이다. 1909년 연산도통사에서 『회헌선생실기』를 간행하며 유교정신으로 국난 극복이 가능하다고 믿었던 순흥 안씨 후손들이 유교변혁을 감수하면서 종교화를 선택하였다. 그리고 공교지부를 받아드렸던 경남지역유학자들의 실천적 용기가 후손인 안순환의 조선유교회로 이어진 것을 알 수 있다.
두 번째로 이미 논문 황영례, 「안순환의 유교종교화 운동과 녹동서원」2004, 영남대 박사논문으로 발표하였지만 죽농 안순환에 대한 연구를 보완하고자 1930년대 안순환의 조선유교회와 유교종교화 운동의 창립과정과 주요활동을 순서대로 살펴보았다. 안순환이 거대한 재력과 명예를 포기하고 선조인 안향처럼 살기를 원하였던 큰마음을 읽을 수 있었다. 죽농은 공자와 같이 선조 안향과 같이 중국의 강유위처럼 일제기를 극복 하고 대동 세상을 이룰 수 있는 힘이 자신에게 있다고 믿고 있었다. 국가가 혼란할 때 마다 선조의 모습을 기억하며 유교정신으로 극복하고자 노력한 연산도통사와 약 10여년간의 유교종교화운동을 펼지며 유교계의 부광을 꿈꾼 흔적들은 관심을 가져야 할 내용이다. 이들의 활동은 유교사 뿐만 아니라 민족정신 회복 노력에도 매우 소중한 흔적이라고 생각한다. 따라서 시대적 사상적으로 다각적인 주목과 연구가 이루어져 이들의 노력이 올바르게 평가되고 유교사흐름 정리에 일익을 기하는 계기가 이루어지기를 바랄 뿐이다.

영어초록

This paper studies the Confucianism religionization movement executed by Juknong Ahn Sun-Hwan by rallying Confucian scholars to restore the Confucian spirit suppressed by Japanese colonialism. With the pride of being a 21st generation descendant of Ahn Hyang, Juknong Ahn Sun-Hwan donated all of his wealth in 1930 to found the Joseon Confucianism Assembly and started a revival movement for Confucianism well received by the traditional Confucian scholars and rising Confucian scholars around the country. He founded the Nokdong Confucian Academy Nokdongseowon in Siheung, Seoul, to enshrine Ahn Hyang and built the Joseon Confucianism Assembly Headquarters.
The Joseon Confucianism Assembly Headquarters invited scholars to produce Confucian missionaries who would run branches of the Confucian Assembly around the country through the Nokdongseowon Confucian Academy.
First, this paper examines the Confucius religion movement of Yeonsan Dotongsa Shrine, which formed the background for the Joseon Confucianism Assembly founded in 1932.
The Sunheung Ahn family played the key role at Yeonsan Dotongsa Shrine, which was Korea’s first Confucian religious branch opened in 1917 to continue the Confucian spirit from the late Goryeo Dynasty and early Joseon Dynasty to the modern era. The ancestor named Hoeheon Ahn Hyang in the late Goryeo Dynasty and early Joseon Dynasty contributed to the stability of the state by introducing neo-Confucianism. The Sunheung Ahn family published Records of Hoeheon during the Japanese colonialism in 1909 to instill national consciousness and overcome the difficult times (1909). Ahn Sun-Hwan, a 21st generation descendant of Hoeheon, admired his ancestor and founded the Joseon Confucianism Assembly (1932). Descendants of the Sunheung Ahn family who believed that the national crisis could be overcome with the Confucian spirit by publishing Records of Hoeheon at Yeonsan Dotongsa Shrine in 1909 chose the religionize Confucianism. The courage of Confucian scholars in Gyeongsangnam-do to accept the Confucian religion branch led to the Joseon Confucianism Assembly founded by Ahn Sun-Hwan.

on Juknong Ahn Sun-Hwan, but this paper examines the established process and major activities of Ahn Sun-Hwan’s Joseon Confucianism Assembly and Confucianism religionization movement in the 1930s. Ahn Sun-Hwan had a great mind of giving up on the enormous wealth and honor to live like his ancestor Ahn Hyang. Like Confucius, Juknong believed that he had power to overcome Japanese colonialism and attain Korean prosperity, which is similar to Kang Youwei of China. Whenever the country was in chaos, Ahn Sun-Hwan remembered his ancestor and dreamed of reviving Confucianism by carrying out the Confucianism religionization movement for about 10 years with Yeonsan Dotongsa Shrine. These activities are not only important for the history of Confucianism but also significant for recovering the national spirit. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to correctly evaluate the efforts of Confucian scholars through multilateral studies on the era and ideology, thus summarizing the historical flow of Confucianism.
