<오대검협전(五臺劍俠傳)>에 나타난 김조순(金祖淳)의 문제의식 고찰 (A Study on a Critical Mind of Kim Jo - Soon in )

초록

본고는 김조순의 <오대검협전>을 검협의 행적과 그에 대한 논찬을 중심으로 분석하고, 김조순의 문제의식을 당대의 살옥과 관련하여 고찰하였다. 서생이 오대산에 올라 우연히 만난 청년은 천명에 따라 10여 년 만에 친구의 원수를 갚은 검협이었다. 김조순은 검협의 뛰어난 검술보다 천명에 순응하며 살인을 감행한 그의 신념을 중시하였다. 그 까닭은 김조순이 패사 소품체를 향유하며 <오대검협전>을 창작한 시기인 1780년 후반부터 1792년은 사회의 급격한 변화로 개인 간의 갈등, 일탈, 무분별한 살인 범죄 등이 증가한 혼란스러운 시대였기 때문이다. 또한 살옥은 인명과 관련된 중대한 사안임에도 신중하고 공정하게 처리되지 않아서 진실이 왜곡되고 옥사가 제대로 처리되지 않아 사회적으로 문제였기 때문이다. 정조는 재위하는 동안 직접 심리하여 옥사의 폐단을 막으려고 했으나, 이는 살옥 담당자가 협조하지 않으면 실천하기 어려운 일이었다. 그래서 김조순은 살인 범죄가 일어나지 않기를, 살인과 관련된 불합리한 옥사가 재발되지 않기를 바라며 검협의 행적을 통해 인명재천을 강조하고 공정한 옥사를 당부하였다. 이러한 김조순의 문제의식은 인간다운 삶을 위해 새로운 인간관계 및 사회 질서를 꿈꾸며 유협을 지지한 하층 문인과 일반 백성의 염원, 그리고 유교적 가치를 기반으로 동요하는 체제를 안정화하려는 지배층의 바람을 포괄하였다. 김조순은 하층 문인과 일반 백성의 희원이 투영된 유협전을 활용하여 전 계층이 공감하는 문제를 해결할 수 있는 방안을 제시한 것이다. 이러한 <오대검협전>은 조선 후기 유협의 외연이 확장되는 데 기여하였다.

영어초록

Considering <Odae Swordsman Jeon> by Kim Jo-Soon with the trace of the past of Odae swordsman and the remark about him, I studied the critical mind of Kim Jo-Soon in terms of murder cases of the day. Seosaeng climbed up Odaesan and accidentally met a young man, who was a swordsman that revenged his friend on someone killed his friend after a 10-year hiatus. It was not a outstanding swordcraft of the swordsman but a conviction of the swordsman who submitted to heaven’s will and executed murder, which Kim Jo-Soon paid attention to. Kim Jo-Soon enjoyed a narrative history sopumche and created <Odae Swordsman Jeon> from in the late 1780s to in 1792, the times were out of joint because Joseon society was rapidly changing, so conflicts between personal, deviations and indiscreet murders increased. The murder case that should be a critical issue was not treated cautiously and justly, and besides the facts about the murder cases also distorted and administrations of murder were not handled properly, so these brought out serious social problems. Jeongjo judged directly the murder cases in his reign to correct harmful effect of them, but it was difficult to achieve the goal because the persons in charge the murder cases did not accommodate with demand of Jeongjo. Kim Jo-Soon wished the murder crime would not happen, and the murder cases would be treated cautiously and justly, so he emphasized heaven of human life and requested fair administration of murder through the unusual trace of the past and the belief of the swordsman. The critical mind of Kim Jo-Soon included desires of the lower writers and people who pursued new relationship and the public order and supported a chivalrous person to live like a human being, and wishes of the ruling class who wanted to stabilize the social order and system in a state of confusion on the basis of Confucian values. Utilizing a biography of the chivalrous person reflected the desires of the lower writers and people, Kim Jo-Soon brought out the question which all social strata could sympathize with and suggested the method to solve the question. Kim Jo-Soon contributed to an external extension of the chivalrous person in late Joseon dynasty creating <Odae Swordsman Jeon>.
