17세기 이여순(李女順) 소문의 힘과 가부장 사회의 대응 (The influences of Lee yeo-soon(李女順) scandal in 17th century and the patriarchal society’s response to this scandal)

초록

이여순(李女順)은 조정 대신 이귀(李貴)의 딸로 일찍이 과부가 되었다가, 1614년 오언관(吳彦寬)이라는 남성과 불교 수행을 위해 가출한 후 체포되어 조정에 파란을 일으켰다. 그녀는 관련자들이 치죄되는 과정에서도 모호하게 사면되어 자수궁에 머물렀고, 이후 인조반정을 도왔다고 재평가 받는 등 복잡하게 해석되는 인물이다. 본고는 이여순 스캔들이 발생한 데에 독특한 개인만이 존재한 것이 아니라 17세기 초 여성들의 삶과 욕망이 뒷받침되었다고 보고, 생불(生佛)과 숨은 반정공신 사이의 거리는 그를 바라보는 담론 주체의 시각 차이임을 강조하면서, 인조반정 이후 기록에서 당대 문제적 여성 욕망이 어떻게 질서화 되었는지 고찰하였다.
이여순은 당시에 기존의 가치관과 여성관을 뛰어넘어 자유롭게 수행하는 보살로 소문이 나 있었으며, 여성들은 그녀를 만나려고 정성을 쏟거나 수행에 동참하기까지 했다. 간통으로 몰린 이여순이 살아남고 영향력을 행사한 데에는 생불 소문을 퍼뜨리며 잠재적으로 연대한 여성들이 있었기 때문이었으니, 그녀의 소문은 그만큼 저항적이었다. 이러한 여성들은 내명부 고위층에서부터 사대부 첩실이나 공노비에 이르기까지 계급적으로 다양하게 구성되었으며, 여성 집단 특유의 친교를 바탕으로 종교적인 믿음, 경제적인 관계로 공고하게 맺어 있었다. 다만 인조반정 이후 기록은 이여순이 자수궁에서 항상 친정과 시가를 염려했다고 강조하면서 당대 여성공동체의 한계를 부각시키고 있는데, 이는 문화변동기에 다양하게 자신을 발현시키고자 한 여성들의 움직임을 배제하고 여성을 다시 가족 내 존재로 포섭하려고 한 가부장 사회의 의도가 강하게 반영된 것으로 보았다.
본고는 17세기 초 이여순 스캔들을 통해 가부장 사회에서 목소리를 내지 못하던 여성들이 일과 신앙, 친목을 도모하던 공동체 속에서 여론을 형성할 수 있었으며, 이 과정에서 공동체적 자아를 발전시켰다고 재구하였다. 이러한 행동이 왕을 중심으로 한 권력적 암투로부터 자유롭지 못했고 대안적인 윤리로 발전되지 못했다 해도, 임란 이후 여성들이 기존 가치를 회의하면서 주체성에 대해 자각하고 변화를 추구한 과정이었음에 의의를 두었다.

영어초록

Lee yeo-soon was the widow whose father Lee Gyi(李貴) was the famous aristocrat in 17th century. In 1614(the 6th year of king GangHae), she broke away from home for execution of Buddhism with her male-friend O Eon-kwan(吳彦寬). And this incident caused for them to be arrested on a charge of adultery. Because of this scandal, Mr. O Eon-kwan was beaten to death in the process of the inquisition and Lee Gyi lost his position of government official, but Lee yeo-soon was favored with amnesty without any good reason then stayed in the Jasoo Palace(慈壽宮). After this, she was not only welcomed from royal concubines and court ladies, but also she was recognized as the hidden contributor to depose king GangHae(光海君).
For these kinds of reason, the character of Lee yeo-soon came to be complicated. In this thesis, I found that this scandal is not individual incident, but representative incident containing the desire of women in 17th century. and also I found that the differences of understanding of her characters(some people think of her as a living buddha, and some people think of her as a hidden contributor in political incident) make her a mysterious woman. Therefore I considered how the patriarchal society reordered the women’s problematic desire after enthronement of a new king.
The rumor of Lee yeo-soon was very resistant to patriarchy. At that time Lee yeo-soon was well known as the living Buddha who has surpassed the traditional values, and many women were eager to meet her, even some of them joined her practicing asceticism. I inferred the women who spread the rumor and believed in her could have an influence on the judgment of Lee yeo-soon scandal.
The women’s network was comprised of diverse class such as ladies of a court, nobleman’s concubines, even slaves. They related intimately with religious belief and economic ties. But after the enthronement of a new king, the Joseon Society established patriarchal order to criticize the sisterhood and to record that Lee yeo-soon had been anxious for her father and her brother-in-law supporting them confidentially in the palace. This point of view intended to emphasize women’s family identification excluding women’s desire for identity on those days.
Through Lee yeo-soon scandal, I reconstructed 17th century that the women could form public opinions in sisterhood and develope the communal self. These women’s conduct had severe limits, for example they pursued power relying on the king and could not make ethical alternative. Nonetheless it was significant incident that the women in 17th century felt doubts about conventional value and attempted to change their life.
