유식 수행위의 특징과 덕목- 통달위에 도달하는 과정을 중심으로 - (The Stages of Practice in The Doctrine of Consciousness-only)

초록

세친의 『유식삼십송』은 크게 세 단계로 구성되어 있다. 첫째는 유식의 본성(性)에대하여 기술하며, 둘째는 3능변식이 다양한 모습(相)에 대하여 기술하며 셋째는 유식의 본질인 유식성에 이르는 단계(位)에 대하여 기술한다. 본 논문은 『유식삼십송』에나타난 유식성이 이르는 유식의 위에 대하여 그 단계별 과정의 특징과 덕목에 대하여 연구한다.
유식의 위는 깨달음으로 들어가는 5단계를 의미하며 자량위, 가행위, 통달위, 수습위, 구경위를 의미한다. 『유식삼십송』은 진리를 본 견도의 통달위와 깨달음의 완벽한실천행인 구경위의 두 깨달음1)을 설정하고, 견도의 깨달음을 얻기 위한 과정으로 자량위와 가행위의 준비적인 수행단계를 설정하고, 완벽한 깨달음의 구경위를 얻기 위한 과정으로 10지 수습이라 할 수 있는 보살도의 준비적인 수행단계를 설정한다.
본 논문은 첫 번째 깨달음에 속하는 통달위를 얻기 위한 준비단계로서의 자량위와가행위의 수행의 특징과 덕목을 중심으로 연구하였다.
자량위는 대승의 순해탈분(해탈에 수순하는 분위)을 닦는 단계이며, 탐, 진, 치, 만,의, 악견의 드러난 번뇌를 제거하지만 숨어 있는 수면번뇌는 제거되지 않은 상태이며, 유식성을 얻기 위해 지혜와 복덕을 짓는 단계이다. 자량위의 가장 큰 특징인 순해탈분은 대승과 일체 유정에 대한 관심을 갖는 것에서 출발하며, 이 단계에서는 지혜와 복덕을 키워야 한다고 한다. 지혜와 복덕은 대승에 대한 믿음과 이해에서 출발한다. 구체적으로는 대보리에 대한 마음을 문훈습에 의해서 키워내며 6바라밀과 4섭사 등의 대승행을 실천하며, 불법의 기피력에 의존하는 것이다.
가행위는 자량위에서 키워놓은 대승에 대한 신해와 일체유정에 대한 마음을 밑거름으로 하여 수행에 본격적으로 들어가는 단계이다. 가행위에서는 6종의 숨은 번뇌인 수면번뇌 즉 번뇌장과 소지장을 없애는 과정으로, 대승의 순결택분(결택에 수순하는 분위)을 닦는다. 순결택분은 무루의 지혜력을 키우는 것을 의미하며, 단계적으로 난(煖), 정(頂), 인(忍), 세제일법(世第一法)의 4선근의 과정을 밟으며, 각각의 4선근은 4등지의 정(定)에 연결되며, 4심사(尋思)와 4여실지(如實智)와 관계한다. 4선근을 닦는 과정 속에서 숨은 번뇌를 제거하며 무루의 지혜력을 키워 견도의 통달위에이르게 된다.

영어초록

Thirty Verses on Consciousness-only(Vijnaptimatratasiddhi) of Vasubandhu is composed of three parts as, the first, on the nature of Consciousness-only, the second, on various appearances of the three transforming consciousnesses, and,the third, the stages to the nature of Consciousness-only. This paper aims to study the features of each stages to the nature of Consciousness-only The stages of practice in the doctrine of consciousness-only means five stages in the way to the Enlightenment of bodhisattva, which is the first stage of accumulating the supply, the second stage of added effort, the third stage of no-leaking, the fourth stage of steady meditation to cleanse habitual defilement,and the final stage of complete enlightenment.
There are two Enlightenments in Thirty Verses on Consciousness-only, which one is the third stage of no-leaking, and the other is the final stage of complete enlightenment. The first stage of accumulating the supply and the second stage of added effort are preparatory stages for the Enlightenment in the third stage, and the fourth stage of steady meditation to cleanse habitual defilement is a preparatory stage for the final Enlightenment in the fifth stage.
The main theme of this paper is on features of the practice in the first stage and the second one as preparatory stages for the Enlightenment in the third stage of no-leaking. The first stage of accumulating the supply is the stage to practice the basic causes as like wisdom and good fortune for the Enlightenment, but in this stage, although exposed agony is removed, hidden agony is not removed. To practice the basic causes as like wisdom and good fortune for the Enlightenment which is the main feature of the first stage begins from the concern for all livingbeings. In this stage, we must widen wisdom and good fortune which is started from the belief and the understanding to mahayana.
The second stage of added effort is the stage to practice in earnest on the base of the belief and the understanding to mahayana and the concern for all living beings. This stage is for removing hidden agony which means to develop the power of the wisdom. This process to develop the power of the wisdom is composed of four aids of penetration to attain enlightenment. We can remove hidden agony by this process, and arrive at the enlightenment of the third stage of no-leaking.
