中國 北魏 金銅蓮花手觀音像에 대한 硏究 - 定州地域을 中心으로 (Study on the Padmapāni-lokeśvara statues of Northern Wei Dynasty in China - With a Focus on the Dingzhou area)

초록

중국 북위기(北魏期)에 제작된 금동연화수관음상(金銅蓮花手觀音像)은 한 손에는 연꽃봉오리가 달린 긴 가지를 들고, 다른 한 손은 아래로 내려 천의(天衣) 자락을 잡거나 정병(淨甁)을 들고 있는 입상의 형태로 단독으로 제작되었다. 이와같은 형태를 취하고 있는 북위기 금동보살입상(金銅菩薩立像) 중 대다수는 명문(銘文)에 ‘관음(觀音)’ 혹은 ‘관세음(觀世音)’이라 새겨져 있어 관세음보살을 의도적으로 표현하였다는 것을 알 수 있다. 그리고 5세기 중엽부터 중국에서 단독상으로 제작된 관음상의 가장 이른 형태로 상징하는 바가 매우 크다.
본고에서는 북위기(北魏期)~동위기(東魏期)의 금동연화수관음상의 명문에 기록된 기년(紀年)과 발원자(發願者)의 본적(本籍), 혹은 출토지역을 통해 상의 제작 시기와 지역에 대해 분석을 진행하였다. 그리고 이 분석을 바탕으로 금동연화수관음상의 지역별 분포현황 및 유형별 특징, 그리고 상의 착의 형식에 대한 원류를 살펴보는 작업을 진행하였다. 또한, 명문을 통해 금동연화수관음상의 제작 계층 및 제작 목적에 대해 파악해 보고, 평성(平城)에서 정주(定州)에 이르는 전파경로에 관해 새롭게 논의를 진행해 보았다.
명문을 통해 금동연화수관음상의 제작 시기와 지역을 분석해 본 결과 상당수의 상이 정주 지역을 중심으로 분포하고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 낙양천도(洛陽遷都) 전후를 기점으로 정주지역 내 금동불상 제작 중심지가 다르다는것을 알 수 있었다. 이를 토대로 유형분류를 해본 결과 금동연화수관음상은 총 4 가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있지만, 5세 중·후엽에 형성된 초기의 2가지 유형을 수대(隋代)까지도 지속해서 제작하였다. 그리고 이 2가지 유형을 분석해 본 결과양주(涼州)와 서역(西域)지역 초기 석굴에서 보이는 특징을 보여주고 있는 것을알 수 있었다. 이를 근거로 5세기 중엽 양주와 서역지역의 문화요소가 정주지역에까지 전파되어 있었던 사례를 살펴본 결과 영구현에서 발견된 문성제(文成帝) 의 「남순지송비(南巡之頌碑)」와 같은 사례들에서 서역인들이 정주 일대에까지진출하였고 있었음을 파악할 수 있었다.
또한, 정주지역 금동연화수관음상의 명문에 기록된 발원자의 이름과 본적을통해 그들의 신분을 추적해 보았다. 그 결과 발원자들이 사회적 지배층은 아니지만, 지역 내에 재력을 지닌 토착세력이라는 공통점을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 그리고 이는 금동연화수관음상의 도상과 그 전통성을 유지하며 100여 년간 지속해서 계승될 수 있었던 주된 이유 중 하나로 보았다.
북위기~동위기 금동불상의 제작 시기에 따른 분포현황을 살펴본 결과, 기존에평성과 정주지역을 연결하는 주요 노선으로 주목되어 왔던 사천도(沙泉道)로는 5 세기 중·후엽 포음현(蒲陰縣) 일대에 금동불상이 집중되어 제작되는 현상을 설명하기 어려웠다. 이에 대해 태행산맥의 여러 노선 중 포음형(蒲陰陘)에 주목하여 살펴본 결과, 이 노선이 평성과 포음현 일대를 가장 직접적으로 이어주는 길목인 것을 확인하였다. 이를 근거로 낙양천도 이전 평성으로부터 정주로 향하는 문화·경제·예술의 유입에 포음형의 매우 중요한 역할을 하였다고 판단하였다. 또한 포음형은 5세기 중·후엽 금동연화수관음상의 유입과정에도 큰 영향을 미쳤을 것으로 보았다.

영어초록

Padmapāni-lokeśvar created in the Wei Dynasty was solely made in a form of standing statue with one arm holding a long-stemmed lotus flower and the other holding a water bottle or the skirt of dress on its side. Most of the gilt-bronze Bodhisattva in the Wei Dynasty period in such form has Avaloketesvara or Avalokitesvara inscribed on the statute, which shows that the artists intended these figures to be perceived as the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Furthermore, it is highly symbolic as Chinese’s first own Avaloketesvara statue in its earliest form.
In this paper, one analyzed the creation period of the statutes and their affiliated regions by studying the inscriptions on the Padmapāni-lokeśvara statutes made between Northern Wei Dynasty - Eastern Wei Dynasty periods, which reveal the year, sources, permanent domicile and excavation areas. And based on this analysis, one also looked at the origin of formalities of the statues, characteristics by type and the distribution status by region.
Additionally, one sought to understand social status of the makers and production goals of the statutes and also renewed debates on the propagation path that follows Pingcheng to Dingzhou area.
In analyzing the statutes’ production period and regions through their inscriptions, one found that Most of the statutes are distributed along the area of Dingzhou. Furthermore, one could also find that the production centers in Dingzhou area are different when move the capital to Luoyang as a starting point. With this observation as a basis, in classifying by type, one could classify the Padmapāni-lokeśvara statutes as four different types, but the two earlier types emerged in between mid to late Fifth Century continued on for Sui Dynasty. Also, in analyzing these two different types, they were showing characteristics witnessed from early grottoes of Liangzhou and the Western regions. In looking at cases like Emperor Wencheng’s Nanxunbei found in Lingqiuxian, which evinced that cultural elements of Liangzhou and the Western regions in mid Fifth Century had spread to Dingzhou area, one could see that the Western regions people had even advanced to the Dingzhou area.
Furthermore, one tracked down the social status of the makers by studying names of the sources and their permanent domiciles recorded on the Dingzhou statutes. This study led to the discovery that while the makers were not the most hegemonic powers of the society, they tend to be powerful indigenous forces. This was deemed to be the reason why the statute’s stylistic tradition was able to continue for more than 100 years.
In studying the distribution status of Northern Wei - Eastern Wei Dynasty’s gilt-bronze Buddahs based on their production dates, one struggled to explain via Shaquan road, why these Buddah figures were concentrated in the Puyin road area around mid to late Fifth Century. In studying Taihang Mountains routes with focus on Puyin road, one found that this is the most direct route connecting Pingcheng and Puyin road. This evidence led to the conclusion that before move the capital to Luoyang, Puyin road placed a major role in the delivering culture, economy and arts between Pingcheng and Dingzhou.
Furthermore, it was deemed that Puyin road probably played a significant role in the inflow of the Padmapāni-lokeśvara statutes in between mid to late Fifth Century.
