경주 낭산 일대 대지개발로 본 신라 왕경 수로망의 새로운 이해 (A New Understanding of the Silla Wanggyeong Waterworks and Sewer System from the Land Development on the Nangsan Mountain, Gyeongju)

초록

경주 시내를 중심으로 한 신라 왕경 발굴조사에서 배수로와 연못, 석조유구, 우물은 건물지를 제외하고 가장 활발하게 조사되고 있는 고고자료지만, 이들이 상･하수도를 염두에 둔 수로망으로는 인식되지 못하고 있다. 수리시설은 비가 많이 오면 도시유적이 침수되지 않게 배수하는 기능만 강조되고 있는데 이는 왕경이 만들어진 유적 기반을 扇狀地 또는 臺地로 인식하는 데 원인이 있었던 게 아닐까 싶다. 더욱 넓은 범위를 새로운 관점으로 바라봐야 할 필요성이 최근 경주 선상지 형성 이후 흘렀던 古北川 범위를 추정한 유적 형성과정 연구에서 제기되고 있다.
이 글은 지금까지 구체적인 논의가 적었던 도시유적의 수로망을 신라 왕경에서 찾아보고자 한다. 해당 연구범위는 현재 경주 북천을 기준으로 보문둑에서 황성동까지로 하였다. 먼저 지금까지 신라 왕경에서 배수체계를 검토한 선행연구를 살펴보았다. 다음으로 황룡사와 동궁, 월성으로 물을 끌어올 수 있는 상류지역인 낭산 일대 자연환경과 유적현황을 검토하였다. 낭산 동편은 황룡사와 동궁처럼 古北川 범위가 아닌 경주 선상지 위에 있는 대지로 파악되며 배수로와 연못, 석조유구 등 古北川 범위에서도 공통으로 확인되는 유구가 조사되었다. 마지막으로 간선배수로와 암거가 갖춰진 도시유적을 중심으로 그 당시 개발양상을 알 수 있는 문헌을 검토하였고, 유적의 존재 가능성을 예측하는 고지형 분석으로 여러 유적에 흩어져 있는 배수로를 연결하여 수로망을 추정하였다. 현대 농수로의 현황부터 시대를 거슬러 올라가며 고고자료 및 문헌을 검토한 결과, 수로망은 고려･조선시대에 만들어진 농수로가 아니라 왕경 수로망이 폐기된 후, 다시 경주 사람이 용도를 바꿔 농수로로 이용한 것으로 판단된다.
이 글에서 말하는 왕경 수로망은 흩어져 있는 잔편을 재해석한 것에 지나지 않는다. 더욱 확실한 상수도 유구가 조사되어야 한다는 점이 이번 연구의 한계일 수 있다. 그럼에도 이러한 해석을 한 것은 그간에 왕경 배수체계를 분석한 연구가 비가 많이 왔을 때 물을 빨리 북천과 남천, 형산강으로 흘려보내는 기능만을 주목하고 있기 때문이다. 이 글로 신라 왕경의 배수체계가 상･하수도를 모두 염두에 둔 도시 기반시설로 재해석될 수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

In the Silla Wangyeong excavation survey centered on downtown Gyeongju, drainage channels, ponds and wells are the most actively investigated archaeological data except for building ruins. However, the work of the Wanggyeong to review water and sewage networks in mind has not been actively discussed. Only the function of draining ancient urban relics is emphasized when it rains a lot, so that they are not flooded. This may have been the cause of the recognition of the base of the sites created by the Wanggyeong as a alluvial fan or alluvial terrace. The need to look at a wider range from a new perspective has been raised in a study on the historical formation process that estimates the Paleo range of the Bukcheon stream that flowed after the alluvial fan in Gyeongju.
This article attempts to find the waterworks and sewer system of the Wanggyeong, which has been less discussed so far, in the Silla Wangyeong. The scope of the study was from Bomunduk bank to Hwangseong-dong based on the current Bukcheon Stream. First, we looked at previous studies that have reviewed drainage channels in the Silla Wanggyeong so far. Next, the natural environment and historical status of around Nangsan Mountain, an upstream area where water can be drawn to Hwangnyongsa Temple, Donggung Palace, and Wolseong Earthen Fortification, were reviewed. Around Nangsan Mountain is identified as a site on the alluvial fan, not in the Paleo Bukcheon range like Hwangnyongsa Temple and Donggung Palace, and drainage channels, ponds, and stone wells were investigated. Finally, historic records were reviewed, focusing on ancient urban relics equipped with main waterways and underground ditches. And drainage networks were expected by connecting drainage channels scattered in various ruins through Paleo Morphology Analysis that predicts the existence of the ruins. As a result of reviewing archaeological data from modern agricultural water, it is believed that the waterway network was not made during the Goryeo and Joseon periods, but after the Wanggyeong waterworks and sewer system was discarded. People in Gyeongju changed its purpose and used it again.
The Wanggyeong waterworks and sewer system referred to in this article is only a reinterpretation of scattered debris. The limitation of this study may be that more reliable water retention should be investigated. Nevertheless, this interpretation was made because studies that have analyzed the Wanggyeong waterworks and sewer system have focused only on the function of quickly flowing water into Bukcheon stream, Namcheon stream, and Hyeongsangang river when it rains a lot. With this article, it is expected that the drainage system of the Silla Wanggyeong can be reinterpreted as an urban infrastructure with both waterworks and sewer in mind.
