YS 1.27에서는 지칭 대상(vācya)으로서의 자재신을 의미하는 데 있어서 자재신이라는 말 이외의 특별한 vācaka(지칭하는 말)를 상정한다. 이에 가장 적합한 말은 ‘옴’보다 더 적절한 진언이 없을 것이다. 왜냐하면 그것은 자재신을 가리킨다고 하는 오랜 역사를 갖고 있는 동시에, 자음 없이 모음과 비음으로 이루어진 순수한 진동으로서 어떤 구체적인 대상을 즉각적으로 떠올리게 하지는 않기 때문이다.
‘옴’이라는 진언이 자재신을 가리킨다고 하는 덧씌워진 관념을 배제하고 나면, 옴은 사실상 일상의 경험으로 떠올릴 수 있는 어떤 유형의 대상을 결여하고 있다. 따라서 YS 1.28에서는 옴의 음송과 함께 굳이 그것의 의미인 자재신을 함께 명상하라고 말하는 것이다.
이 점에서 ‘자재신에 대한 경건한 명상’이라는 수단은 ‘옴’ 음송으로써 실질적인 효과를 발휘할 수 있으며, 순수하고 신성한 경외의 대상이라면 무엇이든 명상 대상으로서의 자재신이 될 수 있을 것이다. 다만 요가철학의 이론적 관점에서 그것은 ‘특수한 순수정신’으로 제시되었다. 이 경우, 설혹 조물주와 같은 창조신일지라도 이것을 ‘특수한 순수정신’으로 간주한다면, 그러한 신도 명상 대상으로서의 자재신일 수 있다. 물론 이 같은 자재신의 정체는 ‘순질만을 속성으로 가진 원질’이며, 이것을 ‘특수한 순수정신’으로 일컫는다.

영어초록

In the Yogasūtra 1.27, Oṃ (praṇava) is introduced as a special vācaka (designation) referring to Īśvara. If Īśvara as ‘a verbal object’(vācya) is referred by the word Īśvara, the confusion (saṅkara) due to the correlation between word (śabda), meaning (artha), and idea (pratyaya) is inevitable, as is stated in YS 3.17.
Oṃ, which has a long history of representing Īśvara and supreme reality, consists of only vowels and a nasal. For this reason, it can be regarded as more of a pure vibration than of a designating word. Oṃ appears to be a sign in the sense that the signified is highly abstract in the form of Īśvara in some cases, and in others a sound but not a sign in others. Upon hearing it, one cannot spontaneously bring to mind a specific image that corresponds to the sound, thus Oṃ is the most suitable mantra referring to Īśvara.
When the traditional notion that the mantra called Oṃ is the designator of Īśvara is excluded, Oṃ naturally loses its effect as a designator. Thus in case of Oṃ, there are no places for a verbal object which normally exists in our everyday life, and the idea associated with it that normally exists in our mind. This is the reason why YS 1.28 states that the repetition (japa) of Oṃ always has to be performed with the contemplation (bhāvana) of its meaning, which is Īśvara.
In this regard, ‘devotional contemplation (praṇidhāna) to Īśvara’ as a means for attaining samādhi can be effectively practiced through the repetition of the syllable Oṃ. Furthermore, any object that is pure, sacred, and awesome can be put in the place of Īśvara as an object of contemplation. It is only in the theoretical perspective of Yoga philosophy that Īśvara is presented as ‘a special Soul’(puruṣa-viśesa). In this case, even a god who has the creatorship over the universe—a concept that is impossible to be postulated in the metaphysical system of Yoga philosophy—can take the place of Īśvara as an object of contemplation as long as it is regarded as ‘a special Soul’. The true identity of Īśvara is, of course, ‘the primordial matter’(prakṛti) which has ‘the quality of purity’(sattva) as its only attribute (guṇa), and this is what is meant by the term ‘a pure Soul’.
