초록

This paper aims to examine the western border zone of Goguryeo and trace the territorial changes in the late 6th and early 7th centuries. It primarily focuses on where and when the military bases were established - the "la(邏)"units in Goguryeo, and the 'zhen(鎭)' and 'shu(戍)' units of Sui(隋) dynasty -inside the Liaoxi(遼西) region, in order to understand the figures and nature of the border zone between those two states.
In the late 6th century, the areas of influence of both Goguryeo and Sui met at the lower reaches of the Daling-he river(大凌河) and the Yiwulwu-shan mountain(醫巫閭山). However, these areas did not represent the borderline.
The western border zone of Goguryeo was based on various "la" establishments in the Liaohe(遼河) area, while Sui's sphere of direct control was limited to the Liucheng(柳城) region where the Yingzhou Regional Commander Office(營州總管府) was located. On the other hand, despite being under indirect influence of either Goguryeo or Sui, Mohe(靺鞨) and Khitan(契丹) exercised a certain degree of political autonomy in the Liaoxi region. So, I contend that most of the Liaoxi region represented the land of Mohe and Khitan, as well as a border area between Goguryeo and Sui where their spheres of influence overlapped.
The relationship between Goguryeo and Sui between 598 and 607 appeared to have been stable. However, zhen(鎭) and shu(戍) units of Sui were being installed in the Liaoxi region during this time period. They included the well-known Huaiyuan-zhen(懷遠鎭) and Luhe-zhen(瀘河鎭) units, which were located in the area of southern Beizhen-shi(北鎭市) & Taian-xian(台安縣) and Jinzhou-shi(錦州市) & Jin-xian(錦縣) respectively. In other words, there was a territorial change between the late 6th century and the early 7th century.
Earlier, most of the Liaoxi region served as a border zone between Goguryeo and Sui along the lower reaches of Daling-he and Yiwulwu-shan, yet later, Sui advanced to the lower reaches of Daling-he and Liao-he.
Goguryeo sought to prevent Sui from advancing by counter-attacking the zhen and shu units with Mohe and Khitan forces. Yet with the Sui's full-fledged attack on Goguryeo, the western border zone of Goguryeo was pushed back to the Liao-he area. In 611, Sui attacked the Goguryeo la units in Liao'he such as Mu'ryeo-La( ), laying grounds for the war over Liao'he 武勵邏 that broke out in the following year.
