고려시대 佛像의 腹藏 阿字圓相隨求陀羅尼 연구 (The Research of the Excavation of Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso in a Goryeo Dynasty Statue of Buddha)

초록

<阿字圓相隨求陀羅尼>는 지금까지 학계에 논의되지 않은 수구다라니로 圓相 의 중앙에는 태장계 대일여래 종자인 ‘ (阿字)’가 인출되었으며 주위에는 25줄의진언다라니가 원권으로 둘러졌다. 수록된 순서는 수구다라니의 근본다라니를 포함한 7종의 게송이 연속해 나열된 후, 짧은 진언들이 이어진다.
<아자원상수구다라니>는 <八葉三十七尊曼陀羅>와 함께 金胎藏의 양부만다라로 알려져 왔다. 그간의 연구는 일본 兩界曼茶羅에 주안점을 두고 <아자원상수구다라니>와 <팔엽삼십칠존만다라>를 해석해 왔다. 하지만 두 다라니만다라가 일본의 양계만다라에서 나타나지 않는 구조를 내포하고 있음을 지적하였고, <아자원상수구다라니>를 해석하는데 기준점이 되었던 <팔엽삼십칠존만다라>를 함께 분석하였다.
먼저 실제 유물에 기록된 명칭과 구조를 통해 <팔엽삼십칠존만다라>는 원형만다라 壇 위에 금강계 삼십칠존 제불보살들의 種字를 가시화한 것과 동시에 태장의 八葉을 갖추고 있다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 이는 기존에 불리던 금강계만다라 명칭에 대한 재고의 여지를 남겼고, <팔엽삼십칠존만다라>는 『大毘盧遮那成 佛身變加持經』과『金剛頂一切如來眞實攝大乘現證大敎王經』)의 두 사상을 복합적으로 수용했다고 판단했다. 즉, ‘만다라’라는 시각적 요소 안에 금강계와 태장의 ‘兩部’를 모두 표현하였음을 밝혀내었다.
한편, <아자원상수구다라니>의 阿字가 중앙에 배치되는 형식은 특정 진언이나다라니에 국한되지 않고 다양한 범주로 써졌다. 또한 태장만다라의 중핵인 팔엽은 이미 <팔엽삼십칠존만다라>에서 ‘八葉’이라는 명칭에 걸맞게 만다라 도형을 여덟 개의 꽃잎과 꽃술로 묘사하고 있어 <아자원상수구다라니>의 阿字가 팔엽의 구조를 내포한 대일여래를 표상하기에는 어렵다고 보았다.
본고에서는 이와 같은 문제점들을 검토하여 과거 태장만다라로 불렸던 <아자원상수구다라니>의 범문을 해석하였고, 중앙부에 수록된 다라니가 ‘隨求陀羅尼’ 임을 알 수 있었다. <아자원상수구다라니>에는 수구다라니 외에도 고려시대에 유통되었던 간략한 진언들이 결합되었다. 수록된 진언들은 고려시대 다라니 모음집인 『梵書摠持集』을 비롯한 요대 서적 『釋教最上乘秘密藏陀羅尼集』, 『顯密圓 通成佛心要集』과의 연관성이 나타났다. 이러한 사실로 인해, 당시 고려와 요 불교계가 영향을 주고받았다는 일례를 간접적으로 파악할 수 있었다.
더불어 <아자원상수구다라니>의 다라니 구성 순서가 의례집에 나타난 다라니와 진언을 염송하는 절차와 상응하기에 실제 의식과의 연관성도 짐작해 볼 수 있는 대목이었다. 이러한 구성은 조선전기에 간행된 『五大眞言』의 「隨求卽得陀羅 尼」와도 동일하여 후대까지 이 영향이 이어졌을 가능성을 추론해보았다.
이상으로 <아자원상수구다라니>는 고려 후기 수구다라니의 한 유형으로 꾸준히 제작되어 불상에 납입되었다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 고려시대에 제작된 <아자원상수구다라니>의 구조와 사례를 통해 그것이 지닌 기능을 재고하고자 하였다.

영어초록

Wish-granting Dharani with a Seed-syllable A((阿)) Inside the Enso (阿字圓 相隨求陀羅尼) is a Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī (wish-granting incantation) that has not been discussed in academia until now. The seed-syllable a(阿) of Garbha-dhatu Mahāvairocanasatathāgata (Womb Realm cosmic Buddha) is engraved in the middle of the Ensō (Buddhist sacred circle). 25 lines of Buddhist spell Dhāraṇīs (Buddhist incantations) are encircling the Ensō. There are short Buddhist spells following 7 types of Gāthās (Buddhist hymns) that are consecutively arranged, including the Root Dhāraṇī of Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī.
With the Eight-petaled Lotus Mandala of Thirty-seven Deities, Mahāpratisarādhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso has been known as the dual set of maṇḍalas in the Diamond and Womb Realms. Meanwhile, researchers have interpreted Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso and Eight-petaled Lotus Mandala of Thirty-seven Deities, focusing on the Japanese dual set of maṇḍalas; however, the two Dhāraṇī Mandalas have structures that do not appear in the Japanese dual set of maṇḍalas. This paper analyses Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso as well as Eight-petaled Lotus Mandala of Thirty-seven Deities that was used as a reference point when interpreting Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso.
The following was discovered from the name and structure recorded on the actual artefact: Eight-petaled Lotus Mandala of Thirty-seven Deities is a visualization of the seed-syllables of the thirty-seven deities of the Diamond Realm and the eight petals of the Womb Realm on top of a circular maṇḍala altar. This left room for reconsideration of the existing name of the Vajradhātu-mandala (Diamond Realm maṇḍala). It has also revealed that the dual set of the Diamond and Womb Realm is illustrated in the maṇḍala.
On the other hand, arranging the a(阿) of Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso in the middle has been used in various categories, not limiting to certain Buddhist spells or dhāraṇis. The eight petals ㅡthe core of the Womb Realm mandalaㅡare portrayed in Eight-petaled Lotus Mandala of Thirty-seven Deities as eight petals and stamens, measuring up to its name “eight petals”; hence, it is hard to view the a(阿) of Mahāpratisarādhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso as a representation of a Mahāvairocanasatathāgata that has an eight-petaled structure.
By examining these types of issues, this paper interpreted the Sanskrit inscriptions of Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso that used to be called a Womb Realm mandala. It has also been found that the dharani in the middle section is a Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī. Besides the Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī, there were other brief Buddhist spells as well that were circulated during the Goryeo Dynasty in Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso. There is a connection between the Buddhist spells and the Goryeo Dynasty dharani collection 梵書摠持集 and Yao Dynasty publications such as 釋教最上乘秘密藏陀羅尼集 and 顯密圓通成佛 心要集. Based on these facts, this paper indirectly identified an example of influence between Goryeo and Yao Buddhism; moreover, the composition order of the dharanis in Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso corresponds to the procedure of chanting Buddhist spells and dharanis in ritual collections; therefore, a connection with actual rituals can be estimated as well.
In conclusion, Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso, which was inserted in a statue of Buddha, is a type of Mahāpratisarādhāraṇī that was consistently produced during the late Goryeo Dynasty. This research aimed to reconsider the purpose of Mahāpratisarā-dhāraṇī with a Seed-syllable A(阿) Inside the Enso, produced during the Goryeo Dynasty, through its structure and example.
