한국과 일본의 근대적 ‘문학’ 관념의 한 단면 -다카야마 조규와 이광수를 중심으로 (A Cross-section of Concept of ‘Literature' in Korea and Japan - Focused on the Relationship between Takayama Chogyu(高山樗牛) and Lee Kwangsoo(李光洙))

초록

본 논문은 한국 최초로 근대적인 문학론을 내세웠던 이광수를 중심으로, 그가 근대적인 문학론을 형성하는 데 있어서 영향을 받았던 일본의 문학 담론들을 살피고자 하는 시도이다. 기존 이광수의 문학론 중 ‘정(情)’의 분자를 대상으로 한 연구들은 대개 그 문학론이 일본의 쓰보우치 쇼요의 영향 하에서 형성된 것이라 파악하는 것이 일반적이었다. 하지만, 이광수의 문학론의 편력이나 일본 문학사의 구도를 살펴보게 되면, 단순히 ‘정’을 매개로 이광수와 쓰보우치 쇼요를 비교하는 것이 얼마나 위험한 일인가 하는 것을 알 수 있다. 이광수는 쓰보우치 쇼요를 비롯하여 시마무라 호게쓰로 이어지는 와세다 대학 중심의 자연주의자들과는 일정한 거리를 두고 있었기 때문이다.
본 연구는 이광수의 문학론이 다카야마 조규의 그것에 깊은 영향을 받았을 가능성을 검토한다. 이미 하타노 세츠코는 이광수가 ‘본능만족주의’를 언급하던 초기 문학론에서 다카야마 조규의 영향이 미치고 있을 가능성에 대해 이미 언급해두고 있다. 본 논문은 여기에서 좀 더 나아가 이광수의 초기 문학론을 넘어 그가 ‘예술을 위한 예술’을 거부하고 ‘인생을 위한 예술’이라는 명제에 정착하기까지의 과정 전반에 다카야마 조규의 영향이 짙게 드리워져 있다고 본다.

영어초록

This study is examine the formation of modern literary theory, which was influenced by the literary discourses of Japan, focusing on Lee Kwangsoo, who first introduced theory on modern literature in Korea. In the early studies, it is common to see that the function of ‘emotion(情)’ as most important part in Lee Kwangsoo’s literary theory in 1910, 1916 has been influenced from Tsubouchi Shoyo(坪内逍遥). However, if you look at the process of change Lee Kwangsoo literary theory and the composition in Japanese literature history, you can easily see how unreasonable it is to compare Lee Kwangsoo and Tsubouchi Shoyo just through ‘emotion(情)’. This is because Lee Kwangsoo had a certain distance from aestheticians moving toward naturalism in Waseda university, Shimomura Hogetsu, Tsubouchi Shoyo.
This study examines the possibility that Lee Kwangsoo’s literary theory was deeply influenced by Takayama Chogyu(高山樗牛). Hatano Setsuko has already mentioned the possibility that the early literary theory of Lee Kwangsoo’s may have been influenced by ‘principle of instinct satisfaction’ of Takayama Chogyu’s literary theory. In this paper, I think that Lee Kwangsoo’s literary theory has been deeply influenced by him, not only in the early literary theory. We can find such a basis on his rejection of ‘art for art’ and his settlement on the proposition of art for life Takayama Chogyu has been often misunderstood as a nationalist, because of his writing named “Japanism”, but he was a critic who occupied the most contradictory position of individualistic nationalism. He understood that the instinct-centered beauty in literature was derived from the action of ‘affection’ in emotion and the literature of the instinctual satisfaction has advanced to cover the nation-state through the mediation of the people’s affection.
Lee Kwangsoo also restructures the position of ‘the literary man(文士)’ by referring to the criticism of ‘Writing is person(文は人なり)’ which was the title of book published by collecting his writings after Chogyu’s death. Lee Kwangsoo's literary practice process was not so different from the point of the ‘aesthetic life theory(美的生活論)’ proposed by Chogyu, namely, the point of individualist nationalism.
