초록

《홍장군전》은 1918년 李海朝에 의해 지어진 구활자본 한글소설이다. 본 연구는 이 작품을 명대 소설 《水滸傳》의 번안소설로 보고 그 전유의 양상에 대해 고찰해보고자 하였다.
《水滸傳》은 조선에 유입된 이후 문인과 민중을 막론하고 독자들로부터 큰 인기를 얻었으나 그 엄청난 인기에도 불구하고 왕조 시기에는 불온한 서적이라는 이유로 파생작품이 보이지 않았다. 그러다가 1910년 일본에 의한 국권 피탈 이후 등장한 《홍장군전》에 《수호전》 무송의 서사가 차용되어 있음이 확인된다. 본 연구는 이 점에 착안하여 《홍장군전》의 《수호전》 전유 양상에 대해 문화사회학적 관점에 의해 심층적으로 고찰해보고자 하였다.
첫째, 《홍장군전》은 《水滸傳》의 무송 서사를 차용함으로써 저항과 전복의 서사전략을 구사하고자 했음을 논의했다. 《홍장군전》은 《水滸傳》 무송 서사를 武人 성향의 인물인 홍윤성의 생애에 차용하여 《水滸傳》의 저항정신을 알레고리적으로 표현하였다. 또한, 개혁적 성향의 지식인 작가 이해조는 전복적 역사의식에 의해 세조의 癸酉靖難을 긍정적으로 해석하고 홍윤성을 소설의 주인공으로 선택하였다.
둘째, 《홍장군전》은 《水滸傳》의 俠義 가치보다는 유교적 忠孝 덕목을 중점적으로 드러내고 있음을 고찰했다. 《水滸傳》 역시 忠孝 가치가 묘사되는 측면이 있지만, 《홍장군전》에서는 忠孝의 덕목이 서사 내용에 더욱 전면적으로 표현되어 있었다. 또한, 俠義라는 유구하고도 복합적인 가치체계에 대한 韓中 양국의 인식 차이가 곧 《水滸傳》과 《홍장군전》 서사 구성의 미묘한 차이로 귀결되었음을 살폈다.
셋째, 《홍장군전》의 창작에 개입된 조선의 서사전통을 단일 영웅의 형상화 및 설화의 차용 측면에서 살펴보았다. 조선 영웅소설은 주로 단일 영웅을 주인공으로 내세워 이야기를 재구성하는 방식이 두드러지는데, 《홍장군전》은 《水滸傳》 인물 중 특히 조선 독자들의 관심을 끌었던 武松을 참조하여 단일 영웅홍윤성을 형상화했음 볼 수 있었다. 또한, 《홍장군전》은 조선 설화의 선택적 수용을 통해 당시 주요 소설독자층이었던 일반 민중들의 흥미와 관심을 유발하고자 하였다.
근대전환기이자 일제강점기라는 시기의 특수성이 낳은 새롭고도 복잡한 문화현상들 중에서 《홍장군전》의 등장은 조선 대중독자들 사이에서 중국소설이 지속적으로 큰 인기를 누리며 향유되었음을 보여주는 한편으로, 중국과 구별되는 조선의 독자적이고도 변별적인 소설문화 역시 존재했음도 입증해준다. 본 연구의 논의가 앞으로 韓中 문화의 관계성에 대한 총체적 파악에 있어 꼭 필요한 바탕이 되리라 기대한다.

영어초록

Hongjanggunjeon (홍장군전) is an old printed Hangul novel written by Lee Hae-jo (李海朝) in 1918. This study regarded this work as an adaptation novel from Shuihuzhuan (水滸傳) and attempted to examine its aspect of appropriation.
Shuihuzhuan gained great popularity among Joseon readers, regardless of scholar-gentry class and general people class, after entering Joseon, but despite its tremendous popularity, no derivative works were seen due to the fact that it was an rebellious book during the dynasty. Then, it was confirmed that the story of Wu Song (武松) in Shuihuzhuan was borrowed to the Hongjanggunjeon that appeared after the Japanese occupation of Joseon in 1910. With this in mind, this study attempted to in-depth examine the aspects of the appropriation of Shuihuzhuan in Hongjanggunjeon from cultural and sociological perspective.
First, it was discussed that the writer of Hongjangunjeon attempted to use the narrative strategy of resistance and subversion by borrowing the story of Wu Song in Shuihuzhuan. Hongjanggunjeon borrowed the story of Wu song in Shuihuzhuan into the life of Hong Yoon-sung (洪允成), a character who had martial spirit, and expressed the resistance spirit of Shuihuzhuan allegorically. In addition, Lee Hae-jo, an reform-minded intellectual, positively interpreted King Sejo (世祖)’s Gyeyu-Jeongnan (癸酉靖難) by his subversive historical consciousness and thus chose Hong Yoon-sung as the main character of the novel.
Second, it was examined that Hongjanggunjeon focused on Confucian virtues of loyalty and filial piety (忠孝) rather than on the value of chivalrous spirit (俠義). The virtues of loyalty and filial piety was also depicted in the story of Shuihuzhuan, but that virtues were expressed more fully in the narrative of Hongjanggunjeon. Additionally, it was noted that the difference between Korea and China two countries’ perception of the long and complex value system of chivalrous spirit led to the subtle difference between the composition of the narrative of Shuihuzhuan and Hongjanggunjeon.
Third, it was investigated that the narrative tradition of Joseon involved in the creation of Hongjanggunjeon in terms of the representation of a single hero and the borrowing of the traditional tale. The heroic novels of Joseon Dynasty were remarkable in the way of reconstructing the story with a single hero as the main character. According to this way, the writer of Hongjanggunjeon referred to the character of Wu song, who particularly attracted the attention of readers in Joseon, to form a single hero Hong Yoon-sung. In addition, the writer attempted to arouse the interest of the general people, the main novel readers at that time, through the selective acceptance of Joseon traditional tale.
Among the new and complex cultural phenomena created by the specialty of the period of modernization and Japanese colonial rule, the appearance of Hongjanggunjeon shows that the mass readers of Joseon continued to enjoy Chinese novels, while also proving the existence of Joseon’s unique and distinctive novel culture. It is expected that the discussion of this study will be a necessary basis for the overall grasp of the cultural relations between Korea and China in the future.
