초록

본고는 야스오카 쇼타로의 초기 작품에서 여자와의 대치가 어떻게 이루어졌는지를 밝히는 것을 목적으로한다.　이를 위해 본고에서는 야스오카의 초기 작품 중 하나인 「신록, 우거지다」에서 주인공 준타로가 어떻게 여자와의 관계를 구축하려고 했는지를 검토했다.
ﾠ재수생 준타로에게 여자는 서열사회에서 성공한 자에게만 주어지는 포상이며 올가미를 씌우는 존재였다.
그러나 준타로는 접근할 수 없는 미지의 존재인 여자를 알고 싶다는 바람을 계속 가졌다.　이성과의 로맨스에 환상을 갖고 있는 어머니도 마찬가지였지만 어머니는 그것을 버리고 서열사회에 순응하려고 한다.　그때준타로는 어머니로부터의 해방을 바라고 여자를 알기 위해 사창가에서 여자를 사고 여자의 나체를 본다. 준타로에게 있어서 아는 것이 곧 보는 것이다. 준타로는 여자를 알게 됨으로써 순간적인 충족감을 얻지만, 그것은 여자의 말에 의해 부정된다.
「신록, 우거지다」에서는 준타로가 여자와의 대치에 성공하는 일은 없다. 다만 여자와 대치하려는 의지는그려져 있다. 어머니라는 여자의 경우도 마찬가지다. 어머니로부터의 해방을 바라는 것 자체가 어머니를 대치해야 할 존재로 보는 것이기 때문이다. 이에 어머니를 둘러싼 문제는 「해변의 광경」에서가 아니라 여자로서의 어머니라는 모습으로 그 이전부터 그려진 문제임을 밝혔다.

영어초록

This article examines the portrayal of women in the early works of Shotaro Yasuoka. In order to accomplish this objective, an analysis is conducted on the manner in which the central character, Juntaro, in one of Yasuoka's earlier literary pieces titled Thick the new leaves, establishes and develops his interpersonal connections with female individuals.
Juntaro, having completed his high school education and currently engaged in preparations for university entrance examinations, perceived women as rewards exclusively granted to individuals who achieved success within the hierarchical structure of society, and regarded them as potential entrapments.
Nevertheless, Juntaro harbored a desire to acquaint himself with an enigmatic female individual whom he found himself unable to engage with. Although the protagonist's mother experienced romantic attraction to individuals of the opposite gender, she made the decision to suppress these feelings and adhere to the societal structure characterized by hierarchy. During that particular instance, Juntaro expressed a desire for emancipation from his maternal figure and sought to gain knowledge about the opposite gender.
Consequently, he engaged in a transactional encounter at a brothel, where he was afforded the opportunity to observe the unclothed physique of a female individual. Juntaro's understanding of the women involved the act of visual perception. Temporarily, he experienced a sense of contentment in his understanding of women, however, their utterances invalidated this sentiment.
In the literary work under consideration, the protagonist, Juntaro, exhibits a notable inability to face up to women, despite the author's depiction of his strong desire to do so. The same applies to his mother as well. The aspiration for emancipation from his mother is perceived as stemming from his perception of her as an individual with whom he must engage in direct confrontation. The topic concerning the protagonist's mother is not presented anew in his previous novel A View by the Sea, but rather manifests even before that as the portrayal of his mother as a woman.
