초록

이 논문은 최근에 새로 발굴한 작품으로 국문소설 『쇼져영츈전』에 대한 논의이다. 이 논문에서는 『쇼져영춘전』이라는 자료를 소개하는 해제형식의 글로 작품의 성격과 가치, 소설사적 의의를 간략하게 점검하고자 한다.
『쇼져영춘전』은 한문병기국문필사본으로 1책(62면)이고, 글자 수로는 16,340여 자이다. 표제는 없으며 작자와 창작연대는 미상이다. 필사연대는 신사년(1881년)으로 추정되며 창작 시기는 그로부터 이전인 18~19세기로 짐작된다. 서두에는 ‘쇼저 영츈전이라’는 말로 시작 되는 것으로 보아 ‘소저와 영춘의 사건을 이야기한 소설’임을 알 수 있다. 표면적으로 드러난 주제는 주인공 이소저와 김수자의 혼사장애를 극복하고 혼인으로 결말을 맺는 것으로 보아 애정소설로 분류가 가능하다. 하지만 그 이면적인 주제로 조력자인 영춘이 존재하고, 소저가 남장을 하였지만 장원급제하고 임금의 사위 즉, 부마의 위치까지 오를 수 있도록 보필하였으며 서사 구조상 영춘이 이소저의 비중만큼 차지하므로 여성 영웅소설로 분류하는 것이 온당할 것으로 보인다.
『쇼져영춘전』의 성격과 관련하여 세 가지가 주목된다. 첫 번째, 주인공 중 ‘영춘’의 조력자 역할이다. 『쇼져영춘전』에는 남장모티프 외에 다른 여성 영웅소설에서는 전혀 보이지 않는 내용이 등장한다. 바로 조력자인 시비(侍婢) 영춘이 모시던 이소저와 같이 김수자라는 남성주인공과 혼인한다는 사실이다. 두 번째, 소져와 영춘의 관계성이다. 둘의 관계는 지기(知己)와 조력자 둘의 절충형 관계이다. 여성 영웅소설에 나타나는 조력자의 인물 형성을 분석 해 봤을 때 『쇼져영춘전』의 창작시기는 비교적 초기 작품으로 밝혀진 『박씨전』과 19세기 작품이라 추정되는 『방한림전』사이의 시기에 창작된 작품이라 추정할 수 있다. 세 번째는 남복 모티프이다. 소설속의 남복모티프는 이소저와 영춘의 영웅적인 모습을 부각시키려는 목적 보다는 흥미요소 즉, 서사적 장치로서의 역할이 더 크다. 이것은 여성영웅이 영웅의 본래적 역할에 따라 움직이는 것이 아니라 작품 자체의 구조 속에서 이리저리 배치되는 것으로 여성 영웅 초기 작품에 나타나는 징후일 가능성이 크다. 다음으로 이 작품이 앞으로 해결해야 할 과제는 세 가지로 요약된다.
첫 번째는 제명의 문제이다. 서두에는 ‘쇼져영츈전이라’로 시작되나, 마지막 부분에 『삼국지』, 『심청전』을 언급하면서 『영춘전』이라 표기되어 있는 점은 『쇼져영춘전』을 뜻하는 것이거나, 이 이외의 『영춘전』이 따로 존재하는지의 여부를 확인할 수는 없다. 하지만 이 작품을 『영춘전』이라 지칭한 것이라면 본 작품을 『영춘전』이라고 하는 점에 대하여 다시 생각해볼 문제이다. 두 번째는 창작시기의 추정이다. 작품상의 필사시기는 1881년이라 밝혀졌으나, 창작연대에 관한 문제로 『쇼져영춘전』의 창작시기가 18세기 전반으로 소급된다면 이 작품은 후에 나타나는 여성영웅소설의 초기작품이라 확정 지을 수 있을 것이다. 물론 이 두 가지 작업을 위해서는 타당한 논지가 뒷받침이 되어야 할 것이다. 그런 의미에서 세 번째의 과제는 작품의 신분상의 문제, 효행관 등에서 인한 리얼리즘적 속성이다. 리얼리즘적 속성은 중인 계급이 창작하였다고 볼 수 있는 큰 요인이 된다. 하지만 그것이 과도기적 세태를 반영한 것인지, 작자인 중인계급의 특성을 반영하고 있는지는 해결해야 할 문제점으로 남는다.

영어초록

This study introduced the tale of Shojyeo and Yeongchun, a recently discovered novel written in Korean and not included in the list of Chinese novels. The study adopted a biological form to explain the features and values of the novel, and its significance in literary history.
Recently discovered tale of Shojyeo and Yeongchun is a transcription volume(62pages) containing about 16,340 characters. It was written in Both Korean and Chinese. It has no title and contains little information on the author and age when it was written. However, the transcription was estimated to be written in the year of the snake(1881). Thus, it can be presumed that the novel was created between 18th and 19th century. The introduction which begins with the words 'the tale of Shojyeo and Yeongchun' indicates that the transcription is the novel that tells of Shojyeo and Yeongchun. Superficially, it can be classified as a romance novel, because Lee, Shojeo and Kim, Suja, the main characters, overcame all the obstacles and got married in the end. However, considering Yeongchun's role as Shojyeo's assistant and Shojyeo's passing the highest civil examination and consequent elevation to the status of the king's son in law, though she was disguised as a man, it seems appropriate to classify it as a female heroic novel.
Three things deserve attention in regard to the features of tale of Shojyeo and Yeongchun. The first thing is a main character, Yeongchun's role as an assistant. Like other female heroic novels, the tale of Shojyeo and Yeongchun also contains a female character disguised as a man. However, it is differentiated from other female heroic novels in that Shojyeo and Yeongchun, Shojyeo's maid and assistant, got married to the same man. The second thing is the relation of Sojeo and Yeongchun. The two people are close friends and each other's assistant who maintain complementary relationship. An analysis of building fictional characters of assistant leads to the presumption that the novel was created between the Story of Lady Park and the Tale of Bang, Hanrim. The third thing is Shojyeo's disguise as a man. Shojyeo's disguise plays more of a narrative device than highlight Shojyeo's and Yeongchun's heroic aspects. This means the actions of female heroic characters in the tale of Shojyeo and Yeongchun are decided by the structure of the novel, not the original heroic roles of the characters. This is highly likely to be detected in early female heroic novels.
There are three tasks to be resolved with regard to the tale of Shojyeo and Yeongchun. The first task is about the tile of the novel. Although its introduction begins with the words 'the tale of Sojeo and Yeongchun', 'the Tale of Yeogchun' is mentioned along with the History of the Three Kingdom and the Tale of Simchung at the end of the novel. It is not clear whether 'the Tale of Yeogchun' is another name of 'the tale of Sojeo and Yeongchun' or refers to a totally different novel. If it is 'the tale of Sojeo and Yeongchun', changing the title of the novel from the tale of Sojeo and Yeongchun to the tale of Yeongchun should be considered. The second task is to estimate the time when the novel was written. Although the novel was transcribed in 1881, it is not known when the work was created. If the novel is proved to be created in the first half of the 18th century, it belongs among early female heroic novels. Appropriate evidence should be provided to reach such conclusion. The third task is about realistic properties in the novel such as hierarchical matters and the view of filial piety. The realistic properties in the novel indicate that the novel was writhen by an author who belong to the hereditary class of middle people. However, whether realistic properties in the novel are the result of the transitionary period or reflects the characteristics of the hereditary class of middle people still remains to be resolved.
