초록

『송남잡지』, <충수류>는 총 207칙으로 구성되어 있다. 그러나 하나의 칙에 2종 이상씩 묶은 것도 상당수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 하나의 칙 안에서 연관 동물들을 다수 제시하고 있기에, 『송남잡지』, <충수류>에서 얼마나 많은 동물의 종을 언급하였는지 정밀하게 헤아려 보아야 한다. 『송남잡지』, <충수류>에서 가급적 많은 동물을 제시하려 한 이유는 풍부한 어휘를 제공하려는 목적 때문이다. 『송남잡지』가 어휘의 제공에 일차적 목적을 둔 유서라는 것은 현대 사전과 같이 표제어를 제시하고 있다는 점에서도 볼 수 있다. 풍부한 어휘의 제공이라는 목적의식은 동물의 異稱을 많이 제시하려는 의욕을 보인다. 또 조재삼은 그들 동물이 문학에서 소재로 활용된 예시를 풍부하게 제공하기 위하여 노력하였다.
또 한 가지 특징으로, 곤충이나 동물을 우리말로 어떻게 부르는지 제시하기 위하여 노력하였다는 점을 들 수 있다. 아울러 곤충이나 동물의 어원을 밝히기 위하여 노력한 점도 돋보이는 특징이다. 어휘의 확장은 지식의 확장과 동의어가 될 수 없지만 가장 밀접한 관련을 갖는다는 사실을 부인할 수 없다. 동물에 대한 지식은 인간이 갖는 지식의 한계를 증명하는 척도라는 점도 조재삼이 말하고 싶은 것 가운데 하나였다.
『송남잡지』, <충수류>의 동물 분류 체계는 현재 시각으로 볼 때 혼란스럽지만, 분류학이 생물학에서 가장 어려운 분야로 간주되므로, 당시의 생물학 수준 하에 『송남잡지』를 평가하는 것이 타당할 것이다.
『송남잡지』, <충수류>에서 보이는 발생학 역시 자연과학이라고 하기보다는 중세 인문학에 토대한 것으로 보아야 한다. 다만 생물 종의 고정을 부정하고 그것이 다양하게 변화 발전한다는 의식은 지식의 고정성을 돌파하는 단초가 된다는 점에서 높이 평가할 수 있다.
『송남잡지』, <충수류>는 중국뿐 아니라 우리나라의 지리서를 참고 도서로 활용하였으니, 이는 생물학과 지리학의 통섭에 대한 의식이 존재하였다는 것을 방증하며, 근대의 지리 생물학과 맥락이 통한다고 평가할 수 있다.
『송남잡지』, <충수류>는 멸종된 원시 동물에 대하여 다수 언급하였을 뿐만 아니라 그것의 현재 상황에 대해서도 큰 관심을 두고 있었다. 이는 조재삼의 박물학이 역사적 고증과 아울러 현실적 인식에 토대하고 있다는 것을 방증한다. 조재삼의 현실적 인식은 동물이 갖는 효용성을 독자에게 제공하는 것으로 구체화된다. 그중 대표적인 것이 동물을 醫藥으로 복용하는 것과 동물을 조련하여 인간의 노동을 대신케 하는 것이다. 그러나 불가능한 바램을 이루고자 하는 욕망이 상상의 동물에 투사되어 비현실적 이야기를 다수 만들어냈다.
그 무엇보다 『송남잡지』, <충수류>가 갖는 중요한 특징은 우리나라의 전설을 비롯하여 신이한 이야기를 풍부하게 제공하여 독자가 흥미롭게 책을 읽도록 만들었다는 점이다.

영어초록

『Songnamjapji』 <Categories of insects and animals> consists of a total of 207 articles. However, not only are there many cases which two or more species are grouped in one article, but also related animals are presented a lot in one article, so it is necessary to accurately calculate how many animal species were mentioned in 『Songnamjapji』 <Categories of insects and animals>. The reason why 『Songnamjapji』 <Categories of insects and animals> tried to suggest as many animals as possible was to provide copious vocabulary. The fact that 『Songnamjapji』 is a encyclopedia with the primary purpose of providing vocabulary can also be seen in that it presents headwords like modern dictionaries. The sense of purpose of providing copious vocabulary shows the desire to present a lot another name of animal. Also, Cho Jae-sam tried to provide abundant examples of animals being used as materials in literature.
Another characteristic is that he tried to suggest how insects or animals are called in Korean. In addition, the efforts to reveal the etymology of insects or animals are also notable. The expansion of vocabulary cannot be synonymous with the expansion of knowledge, but there is no denying that they are most closely related. One of the things Cho Jae-sam wanted to say was that knowledge about animals is a measure which proves the limits of human knowledge.
Although the animal classification system of 『Songnamjapji』 <Categories of insects and animals> is confusing from the current perspective, taxonomy is considered the most difficult field in biology, so it would be reasonable to evaluate 『Songnamjapji』 at the level of biology at the time.
The embryology seen in 『Songnamjapji』 <Categories of insects and animals> should also be viewed as based on medieval humanities rather than natural sciences. But, the consciousness that it denies the fixation of biological species and they change and develop in various ways can be highly evaluated in that it serves as the beginning for breaking through the fixation of knowledge.
『Songnamjapji』 <Categories of insects and animals> used not only Chinese but also Korean geography books as reference books, which disproves that there was awareness of the consilience of biology and geography, and can be evaluated to be in line with modern geographic biology.
『Songnamjapji』 <Categories of insects and animals> not only mentioned a lot about extinct primitive animals, but also paid great attention to their current situation. This disproves that Cho Jae-sam’s natural history was based on realistic perception as well as historical research. Cho Jae-sam’s realistic perception was embodied in providing the reader with the utility of animals. Among them, the representative ones were taking animals as a medicine and training animals to replace human labor. However, the human desire to achieve the impossible wishes was projected onto the imaginary animal, creating a number of unrealistic stories.
Above all, the important characteristic of 『Songnamjapji』 <Categories of insects and animals> is that it provides an abundance of strange stories, including Korean legends, to make readers read the book with interest.
