한국 포크의 ‘도시민요’적 가능성 탐색－1970년대 포크송과 포크문화를 중심으로－ (An Explore on the potential of Korean folk song as the urban song－with a focus on the folk song and folk culture in 1970s)

초록

이 글의 목적은 1960년대 말 한국에 유입된 포크를 ‘도시민요’의 관점에서 살펴보려는 것이다. 이를 위해 포크의 장르적 관습과 한국 내 수용 양상을 살펴보고, 나아가 도시 공동체의 노래로서 집단적 정체성을 매개하는 과정을 탐색하고자 한다. 포크란 말 그대로 공동체의 구전문화에 기원을 둔 대중음악의 초기적 형태를 의미한다. 하지만 대중음악 하위 장르로서의 포크란 구전가요의 장르적 관습을 공유한 음악 양식을 지칭한다. 한국에서 포크는 통기타로 부르는 팝의 한 형태인 포크송으로 정착하면서, 도시 청년세대의 일상과 감성을 표현하여 왔다. 포크송은 한국에 유입되는 순간부터 세대를 나누는 주요한 경계로 작용하면서, 1970년대 청년문화 담론의 중심에 서게 되었다. 포크송의 ‘도시민요’로서의 면모는 일차적으로는 도시 청년세대의 또래 집단문화라는 점에서 출발하고 있다. ‘청년문화’로서의 포크송은 이들의 라이프 스타일과 결합하여 세대와 지역과 계층 간의 ‘차이’를 가시화하였다. 또한 포크송이 불리던 통기타 살롱과 대학가, 기독교 관련 기관은 포크송의 존재 기반인 동시에 도시 공동체의 특징적인 면모를 보여주고 있었다. 포크송의 ‘도시민요’적 면모는 그 정치적 실천에서 가장 뚜렷하게 나타나고 있다. 포크송의 향유자들은 또래집단의 취향을 공유하고, 고수하는 가운데 그들의 일상과 가치를 드러내었다는 점에서, 의도하지 않았지만 문화적 헤게모니의 장에서 정치성을 구현하였다고 볼 수 있다. 나아가 이들이 시도했던 유토피아에 대한 상상력이 1980년대 이후 민중가요로 계승되면서 노래가 가진 집단적 힘과 정치성을 극대화하였다고 볼 수 있다. 서양 팝송의 번안에 불과했던 포크송은 이렇듯 한국의 현실과 대면하면서 공동체의 연대와 실천을 매개하는 ‘민요정신’을 탑재하게 되었다.

영어초록

The main purpose of this article is to research the Korean folksong which was introduced in the late of 1960s in terms of urban song. To achieve this purpose, this article will try to look at the genre convention of the folk. With relation to the aspect of the reception in Korea, this article paid special attention to the process that mediates the collective identity as a urban song further. The proactive meaning of the folk could be categorized as the initial forms of popular music that originated in the oral culture. However, the folk as a sub genre of the popular music refers to a music style that shared the genre conventions of oral songs. The folk has been representing the daily life and emotion of young generation becoming established as a folk song singing with acoustic guitar in Korean cultural perspective. While acting on the major boundary separating the generation from the moment it is introduced into the South Korea, folk songs contributed to the flowering of youth culture in the 1970s. The primary face of folk songs as “urban song” is starting from the viewpoint of fellow culture of urban youth generation. Folk song as a “youth culture” has visualized the “difference” concerning on the generation, region and class in combination with the lifestyle of youth generation. In addition the university campus, live salon in downtown and the Christian institutions was showing the appearance characteristic of the urban community. Apparently these kinds of place could be called as the infrastructures of folk song as well. The face of folk song as a “urban song” is most pronounced in its political practice. It could be said that the folk song has practised the political value. This article focuses to the fact that the youth generation realized their value and daily life through sharing the cultural taste of their fellow groups. Whether it was intended or not, it can be said that they has achieved political practise in the field of hegemony. In addition, it can be viewed as maximizing the political practice and collective forces inherent in the song to the point where the imagination of utopia represented in the folk song in the 1970s were succeeded in the people’s song in the 1980s. Folk songs that were not only adaptation of the pop song of the West, was supposed to be equipped with the “spirit of the folk song” to mediate and practice solidarity of the community while facing with the reality of South Korea.
