선역국역서의 완역 방안에 대한 고찰-宋子大全을 중심으로- (A Study on the Ways to the Complete Translation of the Selectively Translated Korean Classics-Focused on A Complete Collection of Songja-)

초록

본고는 1981년∼1988년 동안 민족문화추진회(현 한국고전번역원)에서 選譯으로 간행된 『국역송자대전』의 完譯 방안을 제안하고자 작성된 것이다. 초기에 민족문화추진회에서는 번역해야 할 주요 고전의 양은 많고 번역할 역량은 부족한 상황에서 한 종의 고전을 전부 완역하기보다는 해당 문헌의 주요 작품 및 유명한 저작을 위주로 선발해 번역함으로써 되도록 많은 종류의 고전을 단시일 내에 번역, 출간하여 일반과 학계에 소개하고자 하였다. 그러나 이후 고전에 대한 사회와 학계의 관심이 깊어지면서 선역 서종에 대한 완역의 요구가 계속되었고, 한국고전번역원이라는 국가기관으로 안정성을 갖게 되면서 주요 고전 자료 완역을 더 이상 미룰 수 없게 되었다. 이에 그동안 한국고전번역원에서 선역되었던 『퇴계집』, 『율곡집』 등 9종의 번역 상황을 살펴보고, 그 중 본원에서 송자대전을 완역해야 할 필요성에 대해 논하였다. 이어서 『국역송자대전』의 선역방침과 번역 상황을 살펴보고, 번역원고에 대한 평가 및 분석을 통해 완역 송자대전에서 추구해야 할 방향을 제안하고자 하였다. 평가결과 번역의 정확성과 표현력이 양호한 편이었으므로 일부 오류를 수정하고 부족한 부분을 주석보충으로 보완하여 선역본을 활용하는 것이 효율적이라고 판단되어 수정방침을 마련하였다.
완역 송자대전의 번역저본으로는 민족문화추진회 문집총간본 송자대전이 가장 적절하며, 내용상 별저를 포함하는 全書의 형식보다는 총간본의 문집 체제를 따르는 것이 바람직하다고 보인다. 선역본의 평가결과를 참고하여 완역사업을 수행할 때 문체별로 번역의 주의점을 정리하였다. 완역 원고는 약 105,000매에 달하며 57책의 번역서로 출간될 것으로 예상된다. 이를 가능한 조속히 완료하기 위해서는 송자대전 번역을 전담할 별도의 공동번역팀이 구성되어 장기간 연구와 번역을 진행하는 것이 바람직하다. 아울러 송자대전의 완역이 이루어지면 학계에 송자대전에 대한 완벽한 연구 자료를 제공하게 될 것이며, 또 완역본을 바탕으로 주제별, 시기별, 수신자별 등 다양한 방식으로 일반대중을 대상으로 한 선역 편집이 가능할 것이다. 이를 통해 송시열이라는 조선의 巨儒에 대해 새로운 면목을 발견할 수 있는 연구가 행해지고 대중적인 인지도가 높아져 일반이 새롭게 인식할 계기가 되리라 기대한다.

This paper explores the ways to complete translation of a complete collection of Songja that was issued by the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics from 1981 to 1988. In earlier times, the institution(called Minjongmunhwach' ujinhoe 民族文化推進會) had plenty of Korean classics to translate but did not have qualified) translators who) could afford to translate numerous Korean classics. So, the institution decided to translate only major works or famous books into Korean, not to translate complete works in order to introduce to the academic world many kinds of classics in a short period of time.
After this, because of the deepening interest of the general public and the academia in the Korean classics, there was a steady demand for the complete translation of the Korean classics. Therefore, the Institute thought the complete translation of major classical materials could not be postponed any more having since the institute was having stability as a national organization called the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics(韓國古典飜譯院). So the institution looked at the translation situation and guidelines of 9 kinds such as T'oegyejip(『退溪集』) and Yulgokjip(『栗谷集』) which had been selectively translated, and tried to suggest the right direction towards the) complete translation of A Complete Collection of Songja, called Songjadaejŏn『宋子大全』, through assessment and analysis of the translated works. The results of the evaluation revealed that the 9 selected Korean classics were correctly and properly translated. And they also suggested the way to proceed with the complete translation of Songjadaejŏn, and had a policy of utilizing selective Korean translation. Therefore, the Institute arranged the guidelines for the complete translation of the Korean classics while regarding it as more efficient to utilize the existing selective translations if the erroneous parts are corrected and the obscure parts clarified with notes.
The Institute thinks that A Complete Collection of Songja’s Literary Works is more suitable for the source text for the complete translation than A Complete Collection of Songja that includes all his non-literary writings.
The cautions to be taken in executing the complete translation are as follows: The manuscript for the complete translation) is expected to be published in a Korean version of fifty-seven books. To finish this translation project as soon as possible, it is desired to build up a special translation team. And, when Songjadaejŏn is completely translated, the Institution will serve as the provider of the research materials of Songjadaejŏn for the academic circles. Also, on the basis of this complete translation, selective editions will be available for the reading public in diverse fashions such as in terms of themes, periods, recipients and more. With this, new explorations in Songja, or Song Siyŏl(宋時烈), are expected to be done, and lead to enhancement of the public recognition of Songja)
