騎驢子 宋相燾의 생애와 저술에 관하여 (On the Life and Writings of Song Sang-do with the Penname of Giryeoja)

초록

기려자 송상도(1871∼1946)는 일제 강점기 애국지사들의 義烈 행적을 30여 년 동안 손수 쫓아다니며 ≪기려수필≫을 저술하였다. 송상도에 대한 생애와 학맥 등에 대한 연구는 여전히 미진한 편이고, ≪기려수필≫이외 송상도의 저작에 관해서는 밝혀진 바 없다. 본고는 송상도의 생애와 학맥 등을 구체적으로 살피고, ≪기려수필≫ 이외 송상도의 저술들을 정리해보고 그 의미와 가치를 자리매김하고자 작성되었다.
첫째, 송상도와 관련된 고문서 간찰과 ≪기려수필≫의 서문과 발문, 새로 발견된 후산 이도복의 서문을 바탕으로 그의 학맥을 구명하였다. 이를 통해 가학을 바탕으로 한학을 배우고 이후 탄당 김영주, 동정 이정호에게서 수학하였음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 후손들의 증언과 잊혀진 기사들을 정리하여 ≪기려수필≫의 편찬 과정과 배경을 좀 더 면밀히 살펴보았다.
둘째, ≪기려수필≫ 부록에 해당하는 <孝傳>과 <烈傳>의 내용을 고찰하였다. ≪기려수필≫의 부록에 실린 <孝傳>･<烈傳>의 인물 기사목록을 정리하고, 송상도가 발췌한 원전 기사전거를 검토하여 그 특징을 살폈다. 무엇보다 경북지역의 효열에 관한 이야기들이 다수 수록되어 있음을 확인하였으며, 이는 경북지역 전통문화와 관련하여 자료적 가치가 있다고 여겨진다.
셋째, ≪기려수필≫ 편찬과 함께 송상도가 심혈을 기울인 저작 ≪고려사≫, ≪조선왕조사≫, ≪중국사≫ 등의 역사서에 대해 살펴보았다. 이 역시 인물전의 성격이며 왕조별로 주목할 만한 인물들의 略傳 형태로 기술되어 있다. 대체로 간략히 소개되어있으나, 간혹 송상도의 인물평이 “按說”로서 달려있다. 이러한 저작들을 통해 일제강점기 역사현장의 기록과 역사서 편찬에 확고한 신념과 사명감을 갖고 오랜 기간 동안 송상도가 심혈을 기울였던 것을 짐작해 볼 수 있었다. 이는 亡國이라는 특수하고 암울한 당대에 일개 선비로서 독립을 위해 송상도 자신이 할 수 있었던 일은 저술과 우리나라 역사서 편찬이라고 여겼기 때문이라고 여겨진다.
그동안 조명되지 못하였던 많은 독립지사들의 삶이 이 시대에 재인식되어 독립운동의 정신이 길이 이어질 수 있길 바라며, 아울러 여타 송상도의 저작에도 연구가 확대되어 그 가치를 인정받기를 기원한다.

영어초록

Song Sang-do, who penname was Giryeoja, wrote Giryeo supil(‘Giryeo’s Writings’) as his 30-year-long personal tracing of patriots during the period of Japanese occupation. Still, there exists insufficient study of Song’s life and scholarly network, while nothing has been known about his writings other than Giryeo supil. In this light, the thesis is undertaken to have a specific review of Song Sang-do’s life and scholarly connections, organize Song’s writings other than Giryeo supil, and establish their significance and value.
First of all, Song Sang-do’s scholarly network has been verified based on old letters related to Song, the preface and postscript to Giryeo supil, and the newly discovered preface by Yi Do-bok with the penname of Husan. What is known through these is that based on his home learning, Song took up Sino-Korean studies and afterwards, benefited from the teachings of Kim Yeong-ju with the penname of Tandang and Yi Jeong-ho with the penname of Dongjeong. Further, the process and background of the compilation of Giryeo supil has been met with a close review through a survey of testimonials from descendents and erstwhile neglected historiographic writings.
Second, I have reviewed the content of Hyojeon(‘Filial Duty’) and Yeoljeon(‘Patriotic Duty’), which constitute an addendum to Giryeo supil. The scrutiny of their characteristics has been performed through a survey of descriptions of personages from the perspective of filial duty and patriotic passion and by examining the original references for Song Sang-do’s quotations. It has been verified that information on cases of filial duty and patriotism found in Gyeongsangbuk-do form the majority, which is believed to have value in respect to the traditional culture in Gyeongsangbuk-do.
Third, apart from the edition of Giryeo supil, I have also looked at such writings that Song Sang-do applied himself to as Goryeosa(‘History of Goryeo’), Joseon wangjosa(‘History of Joseon Dynasty’), and Jungguksa(‘History of China’). These are also biographies, which provides brief biography of noteworthy figures for the specific dynasty. While most of the biographic descriptions are brief and simple, some of them are attached with the author’s comment marked as anseol(‘further reflections’). These writings demonstrate that equipped with a staunch conviction and mission, Song Sang-do devoted himself to recording historical facts during the Period of Japanese Occupation and publishing historiography. My interpretation in that regard is that in the peculiarly dismal era where locals had to deal with the demise of the nationhood, all that Song Sang-do could do as a single Confucian scholar was writing and publishing historiography on the nation.
I want to take this opportunity to hope that lives of many patriots striving for national independence, which have so far been neglected, are brought to light in our time and thereby continue, while further studies are conducted on the other writings by Song Sang-do and their values are going to be appreciated.
