『석가여래행적송』과 『석보상절』의 비교연구 (A comparative study on Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong and Seokbosangjeol)

초록

『석가여래행적송』(이후 『행적송』)은 최초의 우리나라 찬술 佛傳이고, 『석보상절』은 최초의 한글불전으로 그 의미가 크다. 두 불전 모두 기존 불교 상황의 극복이라는 공통된 과제를 안고 있었다. 하지만 불전 찬술목적과 독자 대상의 상이함은 불전의 구성과 내용, 교설과 수행관 등 대부분의 측면에서 많은 차이를 만들어 내고 있다. 『행적송』의 독자대상은 승가 구성원이라 한다면, 『석보상절』은 일반대중을 그 대상으로 하고 있다. 출가 수행자의 궁극적 목적은 깨달음에 있다면, 일반 재가자들은 세속의 어려움의 극복에 보다 큰 관심을 갖고 있을 것이다.
두 불전은 위기의 극복이외에 붓다 생애서술 전개방식, 불전체제, 『법화경』의 큰 위상 등 여러 가지 점을 공유하고 있다.
그러나 찬술 목적과 독자대상의 상이함은 문장 스타일, 붓다교설, 붓다관, 『법화경』의 역할, 주의 운용, 인용처 표기 등 경전 전반에 걸쳐 세부적인 차이를 산출해 내고 있다. 이러한 同異点들은 『행적송』이 『석보상절』의 선행적 모범이며 『석보상절』에서 창조적으로 활용 가능성을 보여준다.
『행적송』과 『석보상절』의 차이 혹은 변화양상을 살펴보면, 『행적송』에서 佛傳의 흐름을 이끌던 『법화경』은 『석보상절』에서 전독을 위한 경전으로 활용되고 있다. 漢詩는 산문 이야기체로, 붓다는 스승에서 구제불로 변화되고 있다. 붓다의 교설 역시 오시팔교에서 전생담 중심의 교훈적 내용으로 변화되고, 수행관은 만선성불에서 붓다신앙으로 변모되고 있다. 註의 운용 역시 교육적인 것에서 기초적인 용어설명으로 변화되고 있는 것이다. 이러한 차이와 변화는 불전 지향의 차이에서 비롯된 것으로 佛說의 풍부함과 다양함, 창의적 활용가능성을 보여준다.
두 佛傳에서 보여지는 한국불전의 특징은 법계승 등 전통중시 경향과 인간을 자연의 일부로 보는 동양적 자연관, 모든 근기의 사람들을 불교적으로 화합시키고자 하는 상생적 불교관 등으로 생각된다.

영어초록

Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong is first Buddha-biography written in Korea and Seokbosangjeol is first one written in Korean. These had the common problem to solve, which was to overcome the present critical situation of Korean Buddhism. Unmuk, the author of Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong thought the only way to free from the situation was precept, education, and practice, while that of Seokbosangjeol thought the solution could be the faith of the lay people in Buddha. From the difference of purpose of them, Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong was made for the monks and Seokbosangjeol for the lay people.
The two books have same aspects because of them all being written in Korea. But the differences in the purpose and would-be readers made the two Buddha biographies dissimilar in the form, the organization, the content, Buddha's teaching, etc.. Firstly compared in the organization, Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong consists of Buddha life story and the recommendation of precepts, while Seokbosangjeol Buddha life story and Lotus sutra and Yaksagyung. These unique forms were made from the purpose of the books.
The two books are also different in the form and the content of the footnote. Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong in Chinese poem is suited to the educated, while Seokbosangjeol written in the prose is fit for the public. Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong includes many specialized teachings, different opinions which can be compared in the many Sutras in the footnote. But Seokbosangjeol explains easy Chinese characters and buddhistic words for the common people.
The Buddha's teachings in Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong are based on Cheontaesayoeui and develops the story by using Lotus sutra. But Seokbosangjeol contains many moral Jataka stories which are entertaining to use as the Buddha's teachings. The Buddha can be said as a sort of a human being in Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong. But the Buddha in Seokbosangjeol is a being who has transcendental capability like God. The Buddha in Seokbosangjeol seems to be eternal God who saves all beings in need.
Seokgayeoraehaengjeoksong emphasizes the precepts as the practice and speaks all good acts which will come to accomplish the enlightenment. Otherwise Seokbosangjeol emphasizes on making Buddha- images and pagodas, and the faith in Buddha.
The difference of two Buddha’s biographies originates from the difference of purpose and shows the richness and variety of Buddha’s teachings and applications.
The Korean Buddha Stories are characterized by the respect of tradition, the consideration of human beings as part of nature, and the Buddhist view of harmony.
