부마항쟁의 문학적 재현 방식의 다변화 연구 -<1980>과 「손수건」을 중심으로- (A Study on the Diversification of the Literary Representation of the Buma Uprising -Focusing on 1980 and Handkerchief-)

초록

이 논문의 목적은 부마민주항쟁(이하 부마항쟁)을 배경으로 쓰인 소설들의 주제 의식을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 부마항쟁에 대한 문학적 재현이 부진한 원인을 구명하는 것이다. 그동안 신문이나 학술논문에 소개된 부마항쟁 관련 소설은 두 편의 장편과 몇 편의 단편에 불과하다. 부마항쟁의 다음해에 발생한 광주항쟁을 배경으로 하는 소설이 100여 편인 점을 고려하면 부마항쟁문학은 발아 단계에 있다고 봐야 할 것이다. 이와 관련해 사회학․정치학 분야에서 왜 부마항쟁이 상대적으로 소외됐는가에 대해 연구가 활발한데, 문학 분야에서도 거의 동일한 시기에 발생한 5․18에 비해 부마항쟁문학이 열세인 이유에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 이런 인식에 따라 본고는 홍희담의 「깃발」(1988)을 기점으로 본격적으로 소개된 5․18문학의 문학사적 평가에 바탕해 그동안 발표된 부마항쟁 관련 소설을 분석해 보고, 이를 통해 부마항쟁문학이 나아갈 방향을 제언하려 한다.
이를 위해 2장에서는 <1980>을 분석했는데, 대학생에서 노동운동가로 변신해 가는 주인공이 서술자-초점자인 이 소설은 1980년대의 주도적 문학 흐름인 민중문학론의 영향을 받았음을 알 수 있었다. 그런데 1980년대에 고평가 받았던 「깃발」이 현재는 거의 거론되지 않는 점에 비추어 보면 민중과 민중성 중심의 서술자와 묘사로 일관되는 <1980>역시 그동안 독자층이 제한적이었을 것으로 보인다. 이어 3장에서는 「손수건」을 독해했는데, 이 소설은 항쟁의 배경이나 전개 과정 등에 특정 이념을 주창하는 언술이 등장하지 않고, 피해자들이 사건 이후에 경험하는 개인적 트라우마에 주력하고 있었다.
5․18문학의 경우 주제 의식이나 의미화 방식의 측면에서 보면 민중중심적 서사 외에도 트라우마, 죄의식의 표출 등 복수의 범주를 통해 다양한 계층의 독자를 포용해 왔고, 그 결과 많은 소설이 창작될 수 있었다. 반면, 거의 같은 시기에 발생한 사건임에도 불구하고 부마항쟁을 배경으로 하는 장편소설들이 모두 80년대의 민중문학적 주제와 서사 전개 방식에 치중해 있었기 때문에 독자층이 제한적이었을 가능성이 높다. 따라서 앞으로 부마항쟁문학은 다양한 계층을 서술자나 주인공으로 등장시켜 다양한 주제를 드러내는, 문학적 재현 방식의 다변화에 관심을 기울여야 할 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the theme consciousness of novels written in the background of the Buma Democratic Uprising (hereinafter referred to as the Buma Uprising), and to find out the cause of the poor literary representation of the Buma Uprising. Until now, novels related to the Buma uprising, which have been introduced in newspapers and academic papers, have only two long stories and a few short stories. Considering that there are about 100 novels set in the Gwangju Uprising that followed the Buma Uprising, it can be said that the Buma Uprising literature is in the germinating stage. In this regard, researches are being actively carried out on why the Buma Uprising has been relatively neglected in the fields of sociology and politics, and thus, it is necessary to study the reason why the literature of the Buma Uprising was inferior to that of May 18, which occurred almost at the same time in the field of literature. Based on this perception, this paper aims to analyze the novels related to the Buma Uprising that have been published so far, based on the literary evaluation of the May 18 literature, which was introduced in earnest with Hong Hee-dam's The Flag(1988) as a starting point, and to suggest the direction of the Buma Democratic Uprising literature.
For this purpose, by analyzing 1980 in Chapter II, it was found that this novel, which is a narrator-focalizer protagonist who transforms from a college student to a labor activist was influenced by Minjung Literature Theory, the leading literary flow of the 1980s. However, considering that The Flag, which was highly rated in the 1980s, but is rarely mentioned now, 1980, which is consistent with narrators and descriptions centered on people and the character of masses, could also considered that a class of readers would be limited. By reading Handkerchief in Chapter Ⅲ, it was read that this novel has no statements to advocate a specific ideology in the background or development process of the struggle, but focuses on the personal trauma experienced by the victims after the incident.
In the case of May 18 literature, in terms of subject-consciousness and semanticization, in addition to popular-centered narratives, readers of various classes have been embraced through multiple categories such as trauma and expression of guilt, and as a result, many novels have been created. On the other hand, despite the incident occurring at almost the same time, it is highly likely that the readership was limited because all of the feature novels set in the Buma Uprising focused on the popular literary theme and narrative development method of the 1980s. Therefore, in the future, Buma Uprising literature should pay attention to the diversification of literary representation methods that reveal various themes by appearing various classes as narrators or main characters.
