高麗 王家의 龍孫意識과 왕권의 변동 (Yongsonuisik[龍孫意識] and Changes of Kingship in Goryeo Dynasty)

초록

본고에서 필자는 왕위를 독점하기 위해 고려왕가가 채택한 전략과 그것의 변화과정을 살펴보았다. 고려 왕가는 天命論으로 즉위의 정당성을 내세웠지만, 한편으로는 초월적 권위에 기대어 왕권의 절대권을 구축하기도 하였다. 다시 말해 聖人君主論과 神聖君主論을 병행하였다고 할 수 있는데, 후자의 모습을 여실히 보여주는 것이 바로 ‘龍孫認識’이었다.
용손의식은 국초부터 형성되었다. 그런데 사실 그것은 형성과 동시에 사회적 효용성을 잃을 운명에 있었다. 유교적 합리주의 사고체계는 용왕이나 용의 후손이라는 다소 ‘고전적인’ 논리가 설 자리를 빼앗고 있었기 때문이다. 따라서 용손의식이 제 기능을 발휘하기 위해서는, 神聖을 끊임없이 수혈하는 시스템의 마련이 필요했다. 고려의 경우 신성의 수혈은 독점과 배제로 이루어졌다. 용손 끼리의 근친혼을 지속함으로써 자기들만의 왕국을 만들어 독점을 강화하였다. 한편, 용손 안에서 자연 발생적으로 파생되는 小君을 배제하여 神聖을 저해하는 요소를 끊임없이 제거시켜 나갔다.
위와 같은 과정을 통해 구축된 기반 덕분에 여러 번의 강력한 도전이 있었음에도 불구하고 개성왕가는 독점권을 잃지 않았다. 무인집정들은 개성왕가의 독점권을 무력화시키기 위해 龍孫十二盡이라는 讖言을 퍼트렸지만, 그러한 노력은 도리어 용손의식의 뿌리가 당시에 얼마나 강고했는지를 여실히 보여줄 뿐이었다.
한편, 고려왕가는 몽골의 등장이후 몽골황실과의 밀착을 이룸으로써 왕권의 강화와 권위의 회복을 동시에 이루었다. 하지만 대원관계의 지속은 왕권이 상대화되는 결과를 낳았고, 그것은 권위의 하락과 용손의식의 쇠퇴로 이어졌다. 그로 인해 고려영내에서 개성왕가가 차지하고 있던 왕위의 독점권이 서서히 부정되기 시작했다. 그것은 瀋王의 왕위도전으로 우선 표출되었다. 나아가 왕위계승권을 그 동안 원천 차단당하였던 小君들의 도전으로 이어졌다. 물론 소군들의 도전은 번번이 실패하였지만, 그것이 ‘사실상’ 소군이라고 할 우왕의 즉위를 유발했다는 측면에서 상당한 의의가 있다.
그런데, 우왕의 즉위는 고려왕가에 전혀 예상치 못한 결과를 초래했다. 왕권의 상대화와 소군들의 도전에 따른 용손의식의 붕괴가 고려후기 고려왕가에게 왕권의 정통성을 제공하는 원천이었던 元朝의 쇠락과 함께 이루어짐으로써, 고려왕이 정통성을 기댈 근거가 희박하게 된 것이다. 그것은 결국 왕권의 정당성을 입증할 이데올로기가 사실상 고려 왕가에는 부재하게 된 것이었는데, 이런 와중에 禑王과 昌王이 왕씨의 후손이 아니라는 說이 제기됨으로써 고려는 멸망하게 되었다.

영어초록

This paper examines the strategies and change process of those strategies adopted by the royal family of the Goryeo to monopolize the throne. Though the royal family of Goryeo Dynasty justified the accession of the throne with cheonmyeonglon, or Heaven's command, they also depended on transcendental authority to establish an absolute power of the throne. In other words, the Goryeo used both thought on Moral Kingship and thought on Holy Kingship in which the latter clearly represented the concept of “yongsonuisik," or belief in the sacredness of the blood line.
The concept of yongsonuisik was formed since the foundation of the dynasty. However, at the same time as its inception, it was destined to lose its social utility, due to the acceptance of the Confucian rational thinking process, which naturally claimed the place of rather “classical" tales about the Dragon King or descendents of dragon. Therefore, in order for the concept of yongsonuisik to be functional, self-purification efforts that constantly transfused divinity had to follow inevitably. The transfusion of divinity was done in monopolistic and exclusive ways. While strengthening the monopolization of the throne and creating kingdom for themselves by sustaining intermarriage within the royal blood line, they constantly removed factors that could become impediments to the divinity and excluded the sogoons (illegitimate offsprings of the king), who were natural derivatives within the royal family.
Despite numerous strong challenges, a firm foundation established through the above process enabled the royal family to sustain their exclusive rights to throne. Although the military dictators tried to incapacitate the exclusive rights of the royal family of Gaeseong through slander, their efforts ended up confirming the sheer solidity of yongsonuisik. On the other hand, the Goryeo was able to strengthen and restore the royal authority by forming a close relationship with the imperial family of Mongol Empire since the emergence of the Yuan Dynasty. However, the persistence in the pro-Yuan relations finally caused the relativization of the royal authority, which in turn led to the decline of the power and yongsonuisik. As a result, the royal exclusive rights to throne within the Goryeo territory started to be denied. It all originated with the challenge of the King Shim and continued with that of the sogoons, who were excluded from succeeding the throne. Though the sogoons' attempts failed every time, they have significance for having induced the coronation of the King Woo[禑], who was “practically" a sogoon.
However, the accession of the King Woo brought a totally unexpected consequence to the Goryeo. As the collapse of yongsonuisik from relativization of the throne and challenges of sogoons occurred alongside with the decline of support that provided legitimacy to the throne for the royal family of Goryeo, the king of Goryeo had lost the ground for his legitimacy. Eventually, this meant a de facto loss of ideology to prove legitimacy of the throne for the royal family of Goryeo, and with the rise of rumor that King Woo and King Chang[昌] were not descendents of the Wang family, the Goryeo Dynasty collapsed.
